This weekend I'm replacing my fuse boxes. And all sockets are provided with earth. This could cause some down-time.

X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs ( mashable.com )

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....

A reminder to review the kbin.run terms of service [TOS] ( kbin.run )

Hi everyone, I saw a conversation on a certain magazine about the wording of kbin.run's terms of service. I'm not going to reply there because its unproductive and irrelevant to the conversation being discussed. I do; however, encourage everyone to (re)review the privacy policy and terms of service of the instance....

@13 is it still doing it? i just re-enabled server-side push updates (it's called mercure) that i've had disabled for the longest time... the timing seems about right when i was messing around with the configuration.

@13 argh, which browser are you using? im on linux, firefox 122.0.1 and it's not happening. let me ask in the matrix chat with the other devs, this sounds familiar

debounced Mod , (edited )
@debounced@kbin.run avatar

@13 ok, i can replicate it now... its not mercure, but it's the auto media preview... that thread is trying to load a video that's not supported. can you disable this in the settings menu (gear icon) and hit the button at the top of the menu to "refresh the page" that should appear? we'll have to submit an Mbin issue for this...

Haven't looked up the station's license to see how much power they could have been pushing, but if I were the "authorities", I'd definely be checking local hospitals for records of anyone coming in with mild to severe [RF] burns. With [low frequency] AM stations, the tower itself is basically the other half of the antenna electrically... probably lit them up like a Christmas tree.

@debounced@kbin.run avatar

hmm, that sounds like a kbin "bug" that's been around for a long time... we ought to change how this is handled in Mbin since I don't think we should throw a 500 for this condition, a better message like: "i've never seen this instance before, give me a second to pull it in" instead of giving up right away... or make it asynchronous so the user doesn't have to hit the follow button again.

@e-five, what do you think?

Updates on Interstellar kbin app: account login, voting, subscriptions, and more ( kbin.social )

If you haven't been following the Interstellar magazine, I've added a lot of functionality since the last thread here, including views for magazines/users/domains, better navigation for wider screens, QoL additions (like the @ button to reveal originating domain, inspired by Artemis), and a lot of different bug/functionality...

I agree, I'm not into outright censorship based on my own personal opinions or beliefs. Our users have the ability to block instances/domains if they wish. Really the only reason I would defederate from other instances is if there were highly illegal activities taking place (as dictated by US law) or if an actor is being technically disruptive (spam and other malicious payloads).

Now that said, I will monitor this closely because Threads is going to be a beast in size by comparison to us and other small instances... it could very well end up heavily taxing my server/bandwidth/storage requirements. I may be forced to defederate and/or limit Threads AP activity if I find that it's overloading my infrastructure/$$$ on storage fees, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

it wouldn't hurt. i wish my work would just give me a VM to remote into instead of dealing with it on my network, at least in my case all the EDA tools I use are ran on Linux anyway... my last employer put so much spyware "security" software on their work issued laptops that Suricata on my router/firewall would light up like a Christmas tree. no idea what it was trying to do without breaking out Wireshark and analyzing captures, but that's when i said enough is enough... can't be trusted.

lmao, gotta make sure people read my entire post!

this VM host is old and tired, so it has been like squeezing blood from a stone to eek out any more performance. my plan right now is to move it to a faster server once the service is up for renewal; i paid a year in advance to get the best rate, so it'll be a couple of months before that happens.

we're making it super easy for any existing kbin instance to migrate to Mbin, just a matter of pointing git at the new repo, pull, and update as usual.

Mbin's API is 100% compatible with kbin as of today, so @hariette should have little to no issues pointing Artemis at Mbin instances.

[REMINDER] Magazines with 0 subscribers will receive 0 updates ( kbin.run )

At least 1 user needs to be subscribed to a magazine in order for it to receive federated updates, so keep that in mind after searching for a new magazine/community. I get subscribed to everything by default (hopefully Mbin will change this behavior in the future), so if it's not a magazine I want to see in my feed I will...

debounced OP ,
@debounced@kbin.run avatar

I have, but I'm leaning more towards submitting a code change to Mbin's default behavior so that any new mags searched make the instigator the default subscriber and they can choose to unsubscribe if they wish.

I don't see a reason to load down the instance if someone doesn't think it's important enough to stay subscribed and I don't allow logged out users to search for any new federated content as it is, so this "enhancement" can be an extension of that. At least this is where my head is at in how to manage user experience (junk polluting /all) vs. space & horse power requirements.

some of us have moved over to mbin, it's a fork of kbin with an emphasis on community driven development. i've already migrated kbin.run over. ActivityPub is very domain name specific once things federate out, so i'm sticking with kbin in the domain...for now.

debounced ,
@debounced@kbin.run avatar

mbin is a very recent fork (has all the latest commits from the kbin dev branch as of today), so not much of anything "new" or groundbreaking has happened yet. i think the main thing right now is catching up on the backlog of PRs that have been stuck in the kbin queue for months, even basic things like bumping the dependency versions to improve package security was enough to convince me to move my instance over.

debounced OP ,
@debounced@kbin.run avatar

great questions! i think the good thing (or maybe bad, depends on who you ask i suppose...) is there isn't one person or owner of mbin. as of today, there are 10 owners/members of the project with merge privileges on the repo; however, we each need to get approval from at least 1 other project owner to "merge it" into the "main" branch.

github and the associated mbin matrix rooms are where most of the discussion about features and direction takes place among contributors, but i will try to make it a point to keep everyone here informed when a major change take place. right now we're trying to catch-up on the backlog of pull requests and enhancements that have been stagnating for months over in the kbin repo. @melroy is also pretty good about keeping the masses up-to-date on recent events if you want to follow him as well.

finally, one way to look at mbin is viewing it as a superset of kbin, that is, unless the kbin codebase changes dramatically or some other crazy thing happens like a change in license (which wouldn't be a good thing for kbin), it should be relatively easy to port over upstream changes from kbin that we want to see in mbin. my sneaking suspicion is that mbin will quickly surpass kbin in every way since we don't have a massive money pit like kbin.social holding us back, the focus is purely on the development of the code base and listening to community feedback/inputs. :-)

After subscribing to a new magazine, I get booted to m/all despite my default view being m/sub ( kbin.run )

I’m on mobile right now. I tested and this does not happen on other kbin instances. It also seems to happen with some magazines but not others and I’m not sure why—best guess is some of the magazines are totally new to this instance and some are not.

hi! i'm doing well and thanks for joining kbin.run - now powered by mbin!

i just checked out the community you mentioned and as far as i can tell no other registered user on kbin.run has previously searched for that specific magazine (until now)... and I'm also seeing timeouts and/or errors when I try to browse the origin server at https://wayfarershaven.eu/c/fountainpens. if the origin server is having difficulties or is being too slow, kbin/mbin will sometimes give up and retry later to pull in federated content. be aware that you won't get any of the prior threads/posts as of the date the community gets federated, so you'll only see new content once the federation is successful. hopefully that makes sense, but you might want to retry later once the origin server stops throwing errors.

debounced OP ,
@debounced@kbin.run avatar

Glad to hear it resolved itself!

I created a GitHub issue for that redirect bug since I think it's related to this being a "bare metal" install and not docker as I can't seem to replicate the issue in my docker dev environment, but I haven't spent too much time digging into it. We'll see if someone else solves it before I do, but I think it might be a Nginx config issue with the recent API addition... TBD.
