Von mir aus sollen die wieder in die EU kommen, aber diesmal ohne parasitären UK-Rabatt und so, sondern richtig. Also auch mit Euro-Einführung.

Dann sollen die uns in Ruhe lassen. Ganz oder gar nicht.

WSL in Windows Terminal is not much different from opening Konsole on any regular desktop Linux distribution. I use openSUSE Tumbleweed on WSL and I think it’s great.

I want this to be good, but I’ll remain skeptical.

Who else but the original developers would be in a position to actually make this a reality? Obviously, it’s still wait and see but I’m optimistic. Reports from alpha testers are positive. Also, both the campaign and the multiplayer will be free to play, so there will be little standing in the way to just try the game when it’s out.

Sok, kinda like Starcraft 3

More like the bastard child Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. Looks promising.

Don’t be too excited: “a free weekly rotating fighter”. KI had a demo with a single fighter before but I think it was exclusive to the Microsoft Store. The news is only about that version coming to Steam.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Nobody’s saying that demos are bad but the “free to play” marker gives a wrong impression how complete the release is.

You don’t get the full game and just buy costumes and backgrounds.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The description is also very clear.

Apparently not:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/61e5745e-9dba-4055-bb46-6ae8f6c2cf19.png

Steam has demos for a reason. F2P and demo aren’t the same.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

If I see multiple versions of a game, I look at the description for an explanation of the differences. It’s not like it’s hidden anywhere, it would’ve been much easier for that person to just read the description than ask the community.

Then discuss with them. I merely made a clarifying reply to them.

Nintendo and Sony, probably: “End your own hardware line and we can talk.”

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Having their service on PlayStation isn’t going to sell anyone an XBox.

Sure it would. If PlayStation got only fewer games and/or less optimized versions of those games, it would be nothing but promoting a closed competing platform that would never allow PlayStation Plus onto its platform.

Sony is basically doing something similar with their Windows ports of PlayStation games. The ports of God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn were released under a year before the originally planned release dates of the sequels.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like the logical continuation of this saga is for MS to give up the hardware game

That’s what Microsoft want to make people believe: “Poor Microsoft only selling proprietary platforms because those evil competitors would not let them onto their platform. Sony basically forced Microsoft to buy Activision Blizzard, commit only future Call of Duty to come to PlayStation at all, and reserving future installments of all other franchises to come out exclusively on Xbox and Windows. Microsoft really wants to release Diablo 5, Overwatch 3, etc. on PlayStation but because GamePass isn’t available, their hands are tied.”

Just look at Steam and Steam Deck: Steam allows subscription services. EA Play is available through Steam. On Steam Deck there is even the entirely vendor-neutral Flathub platform available through the pre-installed Discover store. Microsoft could release GamePass through there and even bundle a Proton-like compatibility layer based on actual Windows code. Microsoft doesn’t do that because GamePass is meant to tie people into Microsoft platforms.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

they want to sell a “streaming stick” and stream games to it.

If that were true, Microsoft would sell such a thing already. GamePass Streaming is just meant as a sneak peek of the games experience. The real deal with better input latency will be Xbox and Windows for the foreseeable future.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but the Sony games are not gimped in any way when they launch on Steam.

No, they are pretty great, actually. The PC port of Zero Dawn was in all likelihood in development before Covid and then the pandemic came and Sony realized that not only are the ports a great way to promote the franchise, they also are a relatively cheap way to earn some coin in a Covid-stricken world. I think it’s absolutely worthwhile to Sony to make those games but we cannot expect simultaneous releases with PlayStation either. They are PlayStation promotion first.

Side note: Despite some noticeable delay, Sony releases more and more current games on Windows than Microsoft does on PlayStation and Switch which only get remasters of 1990s games.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Same here. We can enjoy those games and still add two and two together for why Sony released the ports.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

they actually scrapped it

Nothing was ever confirmed. It was all conjecture based of some thing in a background of a video.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The thing stopping them from putting it on iOS devices was probably the fact that Apple would take a chunk off the top through App store fees.

Just like Microsoft does on Xbox.

EU just ruled that they can fuck themselves and alternative storefronts must be made available on the platform.

No, they didn’t. For now the only thing the EU ruled is that Apple is one of six(?) digital gatekeepers. No consequences for now. Some consequence will come but it’s not a straight ruling to allow competing app stores as you claimed.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

You’re gonna get a whole team of people retrained with software they’re not used to, probably doesn’t have proper support or learning resources to fall back on, and may lack features or compatibility?

Like the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11? People move to unfamiliar software all the time, then complain about it for a bit and then cope.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Windows 10 and 11 are the same product, just a new version…

A new version that removed several features and changed others.

They’re also extremely similar (damn near identical)

That is obviously wrong. Start menu and task bar changed a lot from Win7 to Win8, the from Win8 to Win10, and again from Win10 to Win11.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I work in support, the amount of people I ask are you running windows 10 or 11 and don’t know the answer should be enough of an indicator that when they did upgrade, they barely noticed.

Those people don’t know the product names. That’s it. Obviously they noticed that the core piece of GUI interaction moved from left-aligned to centered, just as they notice when after an update a giant search bar appeared on the middle of the desktop.

Micro***t Word on Linux and alternatives

Are there good Microsoft word alternatives that support Linux (I don’t mind closed source)? Libreoffice is meh and only office is quite good, but are there any better ones? Also, is there a way to install word on Linux using wine? When I do that my laptop just overheats and loses internet connection.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

These are 90s problems. Just open word files in o365 in chromium or Firefox.

Compatibility with legacy files is still limited. Microsoft never achieved full compatibility between their various ports.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Sony will look to roll this out in Spring 2024 with its next wave of premium cameras, however, it’s not clear if there are plans to bring this to its flagship phones.

What are scoops?

Usually my response would be to google it but googling leads nowhere. Results are scoop as in that type of spoon and scoops in journalism. And you know what? Googlign “scoops f1” leads to F1 news sites features the lastest scoops about F1. 🤬🤬🤬

I can’t pay $60/70 to a game when my salary is not even $400.

Vote for a different government then. One that prioritizes strengthening the domestic economy over murdering Kurds and Armenians, for example.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

You’re so out of subject.

And I thought the subject was high inflation…

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Fuck you!

Thank you.

do you think most Turkish people love their government or something?

Yes, Erdogan is very popular among the nationalist and Islamist population.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

You directed the situation to politics, not me.

You blamed “abusers from EU and US” for high game prices when in fact it’s just a side effect of domestic politics that caused high inflation.

I’m just a guy who wants to play a game.

Nah, you want to blame “abusers from EU and US”.

I’m a subscriber of YouTube Premium and I still get loads of ads. On the right sidebar I get offered to buy movies and TV shows, sponsored segments everywhere, etc. I’m literally using ad blockers on top of my Premium subscription because everything got out of hand. I even use ReVanced on my phone because of its SponsorBlock integration.

If Google continues to fail to read the room, I may cancel the subscription, move all my video needs to Piped and Nebula, the latter I also have a paid subscription for. How is that in Google’s interest?

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Google still tracks you just as much as without Premium

Obviously. You’re still visiting a Google service after all.

Go and tell your exciting information to Valve. They’ll certainly appreciate your input how Steam Deck with SteamOS is dead in the water.

woelkchen ,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

GamePass is a service for mildly entertaining games (around 7/10 score). The better ones leave the service Netflix style all the time and for the games I’ve checked DLC was not included, so purchasing needed.

Destiny 2 fell down to mixed reception in recent months according to Steam. Most Sony PC games launch Steam Deck verified these days. Same for many other games. Since SteamOS is a Linux distribution, compatibility extends to other mainstream distributions.

The race itself was pretty good, everything around it, from having the police throw out paying customers on FP2, the rushed track inspection that then caused two accidents, cringe events, and Toto having a meltdown to the time table (pretty much targeted at Chinese time zone) were pretty bad, IMO.
