? I listened to Codename Charming, which I liked a fair bit more than Battle Royal, although I don't think the audiobook did it a lot of favors. (It was good enough to keep listening to, but the MMC's voice wasn't great.) The hero is a Mountain, which I always love.

Also read Ten Things I Hate About the Duke, which I thought had some plotting issues, but Chase always does such great relationships and interactions.

I'm in a reading slump! I had a long weekend and couldn't get any book to "catch." I need ideas! Something that grabs the reader from paragraph one but isn't a thriller. @bookstodon

I have a confession to make.

I have never - never - a Nora Roberts . I could try to excuse myself, but it comes down to the fact that my mom & MIL both read them all. So I didn’t.

Which one should be my first? Left to my own devices, I might pick The Liar.

? I DNF'd His Improper Proposal by Aydra Richards; really didn't like the uneven power dynamic between the two main characters, and the whole set-up was pretty ridiculous. This was her first book and she got much, much better.

? Tramps and Vagabonds by Aster Glenn Gray & am so happy to be loving her books again. Like The Sleeping Soldier, this explores attitudes about male affection/same-sex activity in the past--this time the 1930s Depression. As always, it's very immersive and touching, sweet despite very tense situations. The happy ending is a bit abrupt; I'd have like to see more thought process for the characters. But generally I loved it.

? I finally, finally Mortal Follies, a book much longer and twee-er than it needs to be, though the sticking point for me, unlike most critics, was not the omniscient narrator Puck but the absolutely unnecessary and unbearable Miss Bickle. Cut her completely out and you'd be left with quite an interesting story. I did enjoy the dark and brooding heroine.

Enjoying Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher right now, though.

Day 27 of and today's post is dedicated to @lenoreo as she mentioned MMCs in a recent reply. My fave Cinnamon Roll Hero is probably Martin in Olivia Dade's "Teach Me": he's been hurt in a previous relationship; he's a doting dad; he is sweet and gentle with the FMC Rose, until he becomes a dirty talking sexy lover (after seeking her consent for talking dirty, of course).
Please share your cinnamon roll recs!

"Heartsong" by A E Wasp, one of the books in the series. The MMCs have some tough issues to go through, but they are so sweet to each other! Shipley's Cider is referenced (IYKYK) and Vermont weather plays a key part in the plot... ⚠️TW for homophobic family members, kidnapping and PTSD because of off the page conversion therapy. ? , Though only published in 2018, Lights and Sirens by Lisa Henry has sadly aged like milk, at least for this American. A cop throwing his weight around, even to protect his boyfriend, does not fly. There's an interesting arc for the other MMC, a paramedic who's mentally overloaded by too many horrific accidents, but it's all kind of brushed over in the end, and the romance also happens way too quickly.

No wait, I forgot this:

"Don't you think the anti-war protesters are un-American?" Bobby Dunn demanded. "They're undermining our troops in Vietnam. I bet you never had to deal with this kind of disunity during the Civil War."

Russell choked on his strawberry milkshake. "Yes," he said. "The Civil Was was a famous era of national unity, I guess."

Anybody have recs for single-author science fiction and/or fantasy/paranormal short story collections? I'm especially interested in marginalized authors.

My faves so far:

  • 'Nathan Burgoine's Of Echoes Born (paranormal)
  • Zen Cho's Spirits Abroad (fantasy/paranormal)
  • Iona Datt Sharma's Not For Use In Navigation (mix of science fiction and fantasy)

Self-recs are cool, too!
