the mbin team says some things that I find concerning about kbin

What are they saying?

wagesj45 ,

And hundreds of thousands of years of evolution pre-training the base model that their experience was layered on top of.

wagesj45 ,

Interesting, because I saw a 20 point increase between vanilla Firefox and Mercury when testing last night.

wagesj45 ,

Any reasons why you can't recommend it?

wagesj45 ,

Looking at the installation instructions, it requires you to run database migrations manually with every image docker image update. Does this mean that running watchtower is going to bork this thing?

wagesj45 ,

That's not a bad idea. Surely it could be automated within the image. If my ADHD allows me I might take a look at it later. :D

wagesj45 OP ,

The video this guy posted with the severed head has him going on a screen against the federal government and illegal immigrants.

wagesj45 OP ,

Sorry about the "UPDATE" part if that was unclear, I just used the exact heading on the website due to the "no editing/editorializing" rule.

wagesj45 ,

Unfortunately it inevitable. If a publicly traded company exists, it will have to extract more and more and more until this kind of rent-seeking model happens. And if a company is private, it will eventually go public. And even if you truly believe in a company's owner to not sell out, eventually they will die and the company will go public or get sold. Eventually, money always wins.

wagesj45 ,

This is going to be great for the "haunted PC" genre.

wagesj45 ,

The game that immediately popped into my mind was Last Seen Online.

wagesj45 ,

Copyright and license agreements are not at all the same thing. And just because something is "open source" doesn't mean that it is free of copyright.

wagesj45 ,

I don't think you've properly thought through the consequences of not considering IP rights for projects with a significant number of contributors. There are absolutely situations in which having a single IP holder is advantageous to having multiple IP holders. Large open source projects might find governance hard when they're hamstrung by getting consensus from hundreds or thousands of contributors.

And yes, I did read the title and the post. I understood it.

wagesj45 ,

If my understanding of the GPL is correct, you can definitely build it yourself and publish it on fdroid. Can't use the same name or any trademarks noti has, though.

[UPDATE] Issues with the functioning of kbin.social (kbin.social)

The main issues with the improper functioning of the instance have been resolved, but it led to additional complications. Currently, using the instance should be quite comfortable, but I will continue to work intensively on a comprehensive solution for the next few days. Therefore, occasional interruptions or errors may still...

Would love a technical breakdown on what happened!

wagesj45 ,

The beginning of reddit was much the same. Things stopped working all the time. Weird bugs popped up. And there were people posting posts like this a lot trying to figure out what was going on.

wagesj45 ,

The site seems to be having lots of problems, right now.

wagesj45 ,

If they could force you to pay a royalty every time you so much as thought of a book you once read, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

wagesj45 OP ,

But if the bad actor blocks everyone, they are putting themselves into a bubble where no one will see their garbage takes.

wagesj45 OP ,

Except up and down voting has implications for whether or stuff is visible in certain sorting algorithms.

wagesj45 OP ,

But if a troll blocks everyone that down votes them, eventually no one will be left to see their stuff. It is a self solving problem. On the other hand, a troll that you block can interfere with your stuff being shown to others depending on the sorting algorithm.

wagesj45 OP ,

Why did you choose to be a dick about this?

wagesj45 OP ,

Yeah. Blocking is hard for a federated system. And that's before the philosophical differences that have popped up in this thread on how blocks should work in theory.

wagesj45 ,

Tomato, tomato, as far as they're concerned.

wagesj45 ,

Sounds great on paper but there's tons that can go wrong. Don't forget all those billions that got paid or for national Internet infrastructure that the cable companies just pocketed.

I'll save my praise for when the trains start running.

wagesj45 ,

Judging by the crash test videos of the Cybertruck, this does not surprise me in the least. Why make cars safe when you could just not save some money?

What copyright notice should I put on my FOSS website?

Hi, I am currently working on a website I plan to release under the GPL3 license. I was wondering what copyright notice I should put in the footer of the web page. The notice I currently have is “Copyright 2023 ”, but I do not know if this conflicts with the GPL licence. Should I change it to something like “Copyright 2023...

wagesj45 ,

I would suggest actually naming the license under which it is released if you're talking about the website that is generated by your software. If you're talking about the content of a website describing your project, like a landing page or something like that, I'd either attribute copyright to who wrote the content, or release it under a Creative Commons license such as CC-BY-NC.

wagesj45 ,

It wouldn't be FOSS because a landing page with nothing but content isn't software. I'm referring to the site at blender.org vs the source code for an application at a git repository.

Anything in a menu that you have to do a lot, but still requires multiple inputs to achieve. Think resource management in No Man's Sky or Dark Souls. Crucial to the game, but breaks your flow over and over again.

How come there isn't more torrent based technology

Most of the problems in the current internet landscape is caused by the cost of centralized servers. What problems are stopping us from running the fediverse on a peer to peer torrent based network? I would assume latency, but couldn’t that be solved by larger pre caching in clients? Of course interaction and authentication...

wagesj45 ,

The software landscape for XMPP isn't the best. I twisted the arms of my immediate family and have them using XMPP messaging with a Snikket server I set up, and we've had lots of issues between OMEMO support and the lack of good messaging clients for iOS. It works, but it isn't the smooth-out-of-the-box experience that non-techies want/need.

wagesj45 ,

Not providing builds seems to be a good incentive. I've seen some projects that charge for the installation/compiled software with the source freely available. Lots of software is a gigantic pain in the ass to build without the proper configuration and pipeline set up.

wagesj45 ,

Good lord this is like a level 9 meme. I need a degree in memeology for this.

"It's the content, stupid." - Quick Notes to Supercharge K.Bin (kbin.social)

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

wagesj45 ,

It's time to start posting links to our own blogs, again. Reddit brainwashed us into thinking that "self advertisement" was a bad thing. What they actually wanted you to do was instead turn your content into text posts on reddit itself so that we'd get locked into the platform.

Self advertise. Write interesting things on your blog and then share your posts here.

wagesj45 ,

and if the content is not interesting, it falls by the wayside with no votes. the creme rises, the cruft falls. with more volume, your will get more cruft, but also more creme.

reddit gets tons of spam and absolute garbage posts, but the volume and user voting brings good stuff out.

there will be some shitty blogs, but i think that's an ok price to pay for more content being posted.
