    You can automatically hide posts you don't want to see by using Mastodon's filter system.

    Filters can hide posts containing particular words, parts of words, phrases, hashtags, web addresses or emoji. There are instructions for setting up filters, and lots of extra tips about filters, at:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/filtering-your-timeline-to-hide-posts-on-mastodon

    Filters can be used to hide anything you don't want to see: offensive stuff, spam, topics you're bored of... anything. Some use it for hiding Wordle posts 😁

    Is there a way to filter posts with multiple consequent mentions that are unrelated to any thread? That would be really useful against those spam bots that attack my another account.

    I've read that wants to interoperate with other applications, to align with . My problem with their approach is that it's only planned as a third-party tab, with no promise of a setting that would place all the chats on the single page.

    I realize they have security reservations, but I smell a dark pattern here: only do I message my people on WhatsApp from Matrix, they'd have to change tabs, making a chat with me stick like a sore thumb - or not stick at all.

    Hot bottom-line: hiding behind a tab is no different than cutting off altogether. Multi-messenger chats should become a first-party feature in synchronous software, to comply with . Targeted apps that don't care about such regulation have no future.

    Not to rain on a parade of and some projects embracing , but the official web UI and mobile apps (by enthusiasts) for surfacing it are in a sorry state.

    • Web: very JavaScript-heavy, not optimized for mobile.
    • Web (mobile): can't view comments without logging in.
    • Web: too many fields are immediately thrown into the mix, despite the lack of usage. Mobile apps: the complete absence thereof.
    • Web: issue tasks open either in a popup and as a separate page, but not easy to predict.
    • Web: you wanna click on the task - too bad, it's confused with drag-and-drop.

    This all made me reminisce about , , and plain ol' issues, without all that fluff. And then, there is : it lets you work with issues and pull requests as repos of their own. I have to wonder why fedorians resort to GitLab, when in-house solution (such as Pagure) exists. I assume, it's just that - a fluff. I simpathize it is hard to say no to these minute conveniences.

    ... but seeing that it's a 100% user-supported business has made it a great deal more trustworthy in my eyes.

    So, uh, I guess it's time to give it a try!

    vintprox ,
    @vintprox@techhub.social avatar

    @thibaultamartin @josh

    I can't find a single app that would convert wiki links to regular Markdown links upon save. Only Obsidian fulfills this precaution (making it truly interoperable for me) - other software relies on some vague "internal link" specification that changes from app to app... Perhaps, I could try something with VS Code, but, again, I don't see such auto-replacement working there. Getting back to home (Obsidian)!

    vintprox , (edited )
    @vintprox@techhub.social avatar

    @thibaultamartin @josh

    OK, that's not the real issue I have. My use case: type anything and let it fuzzy search for a file or page I need - and it's the only application of wiki links for me. But even that is hardly what I get in most apps.

    If I'm to type out an exact page name, why not cut the chase and not use relative paths, supported by autocompletion? They say it's because wiki pages conveniently don't have folders and moving files through hierarchy would prevent to capture ideas firsthand, links would break too often.

    The thing I learned recently: hierarchy is not an enemy. If anything, it helps me write notes and disregard all the context, tagging and other fluff. Full text search, autocompletion and reference systems are all the aid I would need. Let ze machine do its thing!

    Figured out how to color text black or white depending on background lightness without breaking the components down to HSL in

    Edit: this is now a blog post! https://miunau.com/posts/dynamic-text-contrast-in-css/

    Quick and dirty filter stacking

    Assuming --bgColor contains your background color:

        span {<br></br>        color: var(--bgColor);<br></br>        filter: invert(1) grayscale(1) brightness(1.3) contrast(9000);<br></br>        mix-blend-mode: luminosity;<br></br>        opacity: 0.95;<br></br>    }<br></br>

    This will turn to black around #AAAAAA. adjust brightness lower if you want it to turn to black earlier. play around with contrast as well, using low and high values.

    After playing around with this (thanks @mia), we noticed there's some fringes happening at certain color values right when it is about to switch from black to white, so this might work best with colors that you get to control to some degree.

    Less fringing with SVG filters

    But! Here is a version that has no fringing:

    Add this somewhere in your markup- it can be anywhere as long as the id bwFilter can be referenced.

    <br></br><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" height="0"><br></br>    <defs><br></br>        <filter id="bwFilter" color-interpolation-filters="sRGB"><br></br>            <!-- Convert to grayscale based on luminance --><br></br>            <feColorMatrix type="matrix"<br></br>                values="0.2126 0.7152 0.0722 0 0<br></br>                        0.2126 0.7152 0.0722 0 0<br></br>                        0.2126 0.7152 0.0722 0 0<br></br>                        0 0 0 1 0"/><br></br>            <!-- Expand edges slightly to clean up any fringing --><br></br>            <feMorphology operator="dilate" radius="2"/><br></br>            <!-- Apply the threshold to determine if the color should be black or white --><br></br>            <feComponentTransfer><br></br>                <feFuncR type="linear" slope="-255" intercept="128"/><br></br>                <feFuncG type="linear" slope="-255" intercept="128"/><br></br>                <feFuncB type="linear" slope="-255" intercept="128"/><br></br>            </feComponentTransfer><br></br>            <!-- Composite step to clean up the result --><br></br>            <feComposite operator="in" in2="SourceGraphic"/><br></br>        </filter><br></br>    </defs><br></br></svg><br></br>

    Then just reference it in your css:

    span {<br></br>    color: var(--bgColor);<br></br>    filter: url(#bwFilter);<br></br>}<br></br>

    tada! no fringing!

    While it is a good option, it lacks some, if not most, of the program-specific features I mentioned, which I will be missing a lot during my current projects.

    My ultimate goal, however, isn't finding the app features, but an ability to switch workflows and not to constrain knowledge management with just one app that has final say in a user interface. One tiny inconvenience and no fast alternative - and I say kaput to my note-taking habit.

    Brain of mine - it simply never gets used to interfaces for very long. I wanna stop maintaining 16 standards of Markdown between programs. That's why I need ~100% CommonMark-compliant files and apps that support most of its features, in the first place.
