Doesn't seem to have worked on most people who claim to have read it. The bits about being nice and caring about the environment seem to be completely missed.

The Catholic Church in Australia for example are refusing to compensate the father of a boy who committed suicide due to being raped by the now deceased Cardinal George Pell. If they believed anything they teach they would've payed the man and offered him councilling, not fight it in court.

Security measures which are hard to verify without source code. More like "security claims"

No one actually runs AOSP on their phone. It is effectively a black box. AOSP exists to exploit volunteer labour and comply with licensing requirements

Except most phones cannot run it

Yes we should encourage a culture where those who freely express themselves are not celebrated. Everyone should keep their heads down and do what society wants. No one is special. /s

You must be real fun to talk to. What if instead of expressing gender identity, it was expressing Christianity or political alignments that resulted in this?

I'm not American and I'm not LGBTQI+. I'm just a person who believes in basic human rights and wants people to care for each other. But apparently I'm out of sync with reality

I'm of the opinion that when a democracy forces you into the military there will be no democracy left to defend

No but on Windows at least you can use another graphics card for display output. Kind of like how laptops with a dedicated GPU work.

unionagainstdhmo OP ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

There's a few factors that drew me towards the Tesla card. The main one being size, because of the way the precision is designed there's really no room for tall graphics cards with big coolers and a power connector on the side. I've been looking at the Quadros as well but I think they're still a bit expensive for the performance and age. Gaming isn't the only purpose this card would get use for either, probably some Cuda/OpenCL stuff, maybe play around with some AI stuff and power a Windows VM (vgpu). At the moment the Tesla P40 is around $280AUD ($182USD) while the Quadro P4000 is around $400AUD ($261USD). An RTX 3050 8gb would probably be alright but there don't seem to be any in the second hand market for a reasonable price

unionagainstdhmo OP ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Thanks! Good to hear its like a laptop since I've been using optimus laptops for a while now as well.

What did you do to keep the card cool? ...And was it loud?

unionagainstdhmo OP ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah I did do a bit of research, apparently it can work with a GTX 1080 cooler, otherwise there are lots of 3D printable adapters

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Flatpaks are much better than AppImages because they don't bring in all of their dependencies, they inherit them from a runtime.

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah so I don't know why OP is using that argument

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

That's really weird. What kind of hardware have you got?

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar
  1. You can’t easily define what apps start with startup

https://aussie.zone/pictrs/image/f8537785-ff20-4bd4-8952-27893b4867f8.png

For point 2, that is true and improving. Always do some research about program compatibility before completely changing your computer's OS.

For point 3. Programs are generally installed in /usr/bin and ~/.var/app for Flatpaks (analogous to MS Store). Much easier than finding where MS store apps are installed.

Never come across point 4, so I can't dismiss it.

  1. As with 2, depends on your usecase

  2. GNOME Disk manager (comes with Fedora and Ubuntu) has options to mount drives to arbitrary locations if needed.

I understand your argument but making points like these don't really contribute to the discussion.

Industry Standard software is just a fancy way of saying "Monopoly"

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

That is odd. I've been using NVIDIA and haven't really had any issues apart from just installing the proprietary driver through the package manager. People like to make out that NVIDIA is really bad on Linux, but lately it's been pretty good. My Quadro ~10 year old Quadro M2000 is still supported by the latest driver. Same cannot be said for more recent AMD APUs (looking at you Vega 10).

Maybe next time you try Linux try Fedora since it has more recent drivers, etc. Just make sure you follow the instructions to install the NVIDIA proprietary drivers from RPMFusion. https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA

Otherwise PopOS is apparently good since it bundles the NVIDIA driver with the iso. It's just been a bit buggy in my experience.

This f*cking sucks. I hope they don't bring this to Australia, I want to make my native app a web app to save money so I don't have to pay their bullshit fees and own their shit computers

I wish we were doing that here too. Hopefully when we do we'll take some learnings based on Europe's experience.

Fuck off Israel. No one should help these Nazis

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

If Israel hadn't been indirectly creating the conditions for Hamas to form and become popular (at least at the time of the last election) then I would agree. Resistance groups don't form based on a whim or pure evil. There's usually a rationale and it's blazingly obvious in this case

As a programmer, OpenSCAD is amazingly easy to use compared to the mouse based alternatives

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

This is why the GPL is so important. It doesn't require them to donate, but it does require them to release any bugfixes they made or software they made using it

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Are they? These services do require money to run, and the pricing seems very reasonable

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

You must be a real treat to be around. I've never met anyone in Gen Z who exhibits any of that behaviour. Maybe you're just exaggerating a bit based on very few people, in the off chance that you might have some evidence to support this please share it

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

I so happen to be of that generation and we're exposed to many of my generation through school and university. I assure you the type you mention who need a screen to sleep and worship celebrities represent a very small proportion. If you think everyone from Gen Z is like that I would accuse you of never leaving Instagram or YouTube

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

I'd like it if they weren't necessary and everything was AV1, then I would be alright with the codecs being omitted by default without any simple way to install them.

Similarly with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, NVIDIA actually recommend installing the driver through the package provided through your distro on thier download page

@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Provided that the developer can either remove contributed code or seek copyright licences from every contributor it can be done. Whether this did happen or not is unclear, the developer appears a little arrogant about having written the majority of the code, showing little appreciation towards minor contributors. We cannot tell whether the contributors gave permission for their code to be re-licenced or if their code was removed.

Personally, when contributing to GPL projects I would expect that this kind of thing wouldn't be possible. Using the GPL is a very philosophical choice of licence and is a move to say that you really care about your users

I think that it would be good to mirror the Lemmy repositories to a FOSS alternative (e.g. Codeberg)

Currently, the Lemmy Project only uses Github for its repositories related to Lemmy’s development (e.g. Lemmy, Lemmy-UI). GitHub is a proprietary service, and it is owned by Microsoft. These facts open the door for a myriad of potential issues across the ecosystem, and community. I would like to clarify, though, that I don’t...

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Unfortunately gitlab.com have been really cutting back on features for even open source projects due to money problems

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

It's always struck me as a bit odd that people choose to use a paid proprietary app to access a free and open source social media platform which is developed and hosted entirely by volunteers based on donations. Whilst I don't have a problem with people making money off of Lemmy apps, making them proprietary and with ads seems against the spirit of Lemmy

What does October 7 change? Most 2 state solutions have failed to be fair to Palestinians as the first people there. The only reason why HAMAS is in power is because Israel is oppressing Palestinians and it would make sense that they would hate Israel. Israel was only established fairly recently by kicking the Palestinians out of their land. October 7 was not a terrorist attack, it was an act of war, a war which has been ongoing since Israel was established.

The news sources you linked are Israeli so not worth reading for a balanced perspective

unionagainstdhmo ,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar
  • I never said I supported HAMAS. I support neither party involved in this war.
  • There needs to be a solution but neither party appear to be willing to be a part of it.
  • Israel's attack on Gaza is not self-defence
  • Israel are not taking adequate steps to reduce civilian casualties
  • I said HAMAS' attack was an act of war not terror, a higher charge than you give it.

Frankly, I am insulted by your childishness in response to my arguments
