This userstyle adds checkmarks next to the names of official collections (i.e., collections that Ernest verifies and gives an official link). Right now, official collections aren't distinguished in any way, so I thought this would be a nice way of doing it!...
If it makes you feel any better, the functionality is only 6 days old :-)
Ernest is also putting a ton of work in, and documenting it in that magazine (note: it's also a bit of a unique opportunity to chime in right away on a new feature ... for example, 'Collections' was called 'Categories' originally and someone in that thread said that they thought 'Collections' would be a better name and Ernest agreed and made the change right away!)
Today, I continue preparations for refactoring. Szymon updated the environment and added a spoiler tag in the markdown editor. Additionally, there were several fixes and improvements related to collections and the People page....
Right now, downvotes (reduces) don't federate to (and from?) Kbin instances. This lack of federation makes the downvote counter really inaccurate—a comment that looks like it's +10 might be -15 when you look at it from lemmy.world....
A boost is effectively a retweet. The thing you boost gets re-shared from you to the people that follow you ... the stuff I boost with this account is gets added to my feed on my Mastodon account. You're basically saying "damn, I love this comment and want to make sure everyone else gets a chance to see it too!"
Today, I started preparations for a more extensive code refactoring. The changes won't be immediately visible, but they will significantly impact the future development of the project. This includes improving the functioning of federation, with a particular focus on collaborative remote content moderation. This will likely take...
It's been almost a week since I started describing my work in the devlog. I'm okay with the progress and the pace I've set for myself. The mechanism to delete your account isn't yet working and Ernest needs to manually do a bunch of stuff to make it happen, so it's not so much an "approval" as it is a notification to Ernest that he needs to do something.
This week (at the latest at the beginning of next week), there will be a several-hour technical break. A banner with detailed information about this will appear 24 hours before the planned work....
API stuff is listed in the 'merged pull requests' section (quite a few times), so unless I'm mis-interpreting what that means, I think the API should be going live as long as this downtime is for the updating of the instance!
This will help a LOT with people seeing /kbin as an option ... the mobile webpage is pretty fantastic, but I'm really looking forward to switching to the Artemis App as my daily driver.
Is that planes that are packed to the gills or private planes that actually have space that people aren't crammed into?
Also, 3-4/6 liters of what? ICE cars and modern planes aren't burning the same fuel, so I'm not sure what this is intending to portray by directly comparing how much of each (in liters) that they burn (serious question, no snark)
If you're a single man with infants (under age 1) and/or children (under age 5) then, THEY are eligible for the benefits of the program. Women are specifically added in because the program is designed to also help pregnant, breastfeeding and/or postpartum women who have their own nutritional needs. Women who don't meet those requirements are also not eligible.
So, you don't get help with food for yourself, but you can get assistance for infants/children ... there are other programs to help you.
Search terms used on Google in Incognito mode: single man with children WIC eligibility
Brings you to this page: https://www.joinproviders.com/state/illinois/wic/
Which has the below information:
There are four kinds of eligibility for WIC:
Categorical: you need to be a mom, child, or have custody of a child.
Moms have to be pregnant, up to six months past pregnancy, or up to your baby’s first birthday if you’re breastfeeding.
Children are eligible up to their fifth birthday.
Foster parents, guardians and single fathers who have custody of their children are also eligible.
Residential: You need to live in the state where you’re applying.
Nutritional: A health professional needs to determine if you are at “nutrition risk.” This might mean you have a medical condition like anemia, or a diet that could be healthier. You can see a health professional for free at a local WIC clinic.
Financial: Your household needs to make less than the amounts listed in the income limit table below to qualify for WIC. A pregnant woman counts as two (or more) household members. If you know you’re having more than one baby, count each one as a household member.
The top link for that search is for a page in IL, but I saw similar for other states.
Today’s story is about Philips Hue by Signify. They will soon start forcing accounts on all users and upload user data to their cloud. For now, Signify says you’ll still be able to control your Hue lights locally as you’re currently used to, but we don’t know if this may change in the future. The privacy policy allows...
It's scary because there is an incredible amount of data that can be gained just by knowing when your lights are turning on and off (when people leave/return for the day and when they're on vacation are examples). Combine that with information on what IP Address the app is reporting from and you may be able to get a decent bit of location data even without officially querying for location.
Without an account, potentially having this information is bad enough but mandating an account and then having it tied to your email address is worse (since most people aren't going to make a per-service address).
Right now, my Hue hub is prevented from accessing the Internet and everything using the local API works without issue, except the app is trying to force a TOS agreement and without agreeing I cant do anything with the official app (add/remove devices, adjust on/off state, adjust brightness, etc...). Home Assistant control works, so, my lights still come on automatically based on my motion sensors and my light switches through HA will still turn them on and off and adjust brightness and all that ... If I were relying on the official app though, I'd have no choice but to agree to their TOS or would now have to take all the bulbs out.
This really sucks because I paid a shit ton for these bulbs vs their competitors because I liked that they allowed local control natively without needing to mess around with anything to get it to work and had a quality product ... Had I known this would happen I definitely would not have paid the hefty surcharge I did and would have gone with a competing product.
Hi, I've kind of stopped using kbin, the reason being that every time I go on this website, it asks me to relog in, even though I've selected remember me last time that I did log in....
I like that kbin is smaller compared to some lemmy instances. I also prefer the UI. Bigger communities tend to feel a bit overwhelming for me. I also appreciate how transparent Ernest has been regarding kbin's development. That said, it's been a bit challenging to figure out how to utilize some of the federation features that...
For apps, Artemis exists, but only works on artemis.camp until the API is official, but you can grab it and check it out. Pretty sweet already.
Upvote means "I like what you said and want you to know it".
Boost means "I like what you said and want others to see it too!". Think of it like a re-tweet or whatever it's called on Mastodon (re-toot?).
ETA: I believe the dev of Artemis is also planning on open sourcing their KBIN<->lemmy translation layer once everything is confirmed to make it easier for others to add support to their apps too
I’m a longtime This Week in Tech listener and I’ve realized that downloading the new episode every Monday morning has become a habit I could never imagine quitting....
My top 3 are:
Foss Podd - Has interviews with open source devs from some pretty large projects
Self Hosted - If you're interested in self hosting, you've probably come across some of their resources, why not listen to them?
Unnamed Reverse Engineering Podcast - Interviews with hardware hackers and talking about the tools they use. Very interesting.
To be fair, to some of us this is a feature not a bug.
A technology post on a technology/infosec/IT focused instance seems to have a COMPLETELY different focus and conversation than one on the larger instances, for example and I don't want those mixed in with people saying that AI is a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world.
There are smaller dedicated art focused instances popping up too. I'd expect that they're going to have a better set of conversations around those subjects than the same threads on a general instance and I don't want those mixed up.
If it's a subject I really want to see a lot of discussion about, I'll look at multiple threads... can this mean that some subjects won't have as good of a conversation because people aren't bouncing off of each other? Yeah, absolutely and that frankly SUCKS, but, as stated, it also means that some of the niche conversations have a chance to grow where they may have previously just been unseen due to how many people are talking.
To me, they're on different instances for a reason, let it grow organically. The ones that stand out will wind up being the main ones people use.
As for amount of users. A decent amount of those are likely alts people created when instances were having problems or just to try out the different locations.
Or, people just didn't like the Fediverse for all the reasons you stated, which is also possible, but I don't necessarily think chasing numbers should be the end all goal
Yeah, but, I don't see how that really changes anything.
On a smaller instance (or one that's defederated from others ... in either direction), that might very well completely shift focuses.
For the Fediverse specific community, if you want one with the most chance of getting to the developers, use the instance that they're on, otherwise, I'd think to just let the cultures develop and diverge naturally as they're likely to.
Just because your dogs brain was transferred into a robot body that doesn't need exercise doesn't mean that the dog doesn't still want to go for a walk!
So i just bought Asus rog phone 6d and im extremely bothered by the lack of the back ,home and whatewer is the 3 one called buttons on the news androids. Is this something you all got used to with time or does this still bother you( IT really fells much less intuitive compared to the old 3 buttons ,alghtough preferably i would...
I used a phone without gestures the other day and had such a hard time with it, it was crazy how unintuitive the buttons felt in comparison to the gestures!
The simple fact is, neither is actually all that intuitive, they're learned, but gestures definitely get to be very convenient and a much quicker form of navigation.
@Vlhacs Yeah, like I said, we call things intuitive without realizing that nothing in this is intuitive at all, it's all learned behavior.
For me now, swiping at the edges of the screen makes complete sense and needing to go to a certain place at the bottom of the phone to go back was weird because "why would I go to the bottom of the screen to go backwards, that doesn't make sense", but it was definitely a learning curve to get to this point!
With all that said, hell, there are still times I really miss the old trackball and full keyboard from the OG G1 (the dedicated hardware button for the camera was nice too, but double tap power isn't terrible). I wouldn't want to give up screen space for the trackball, but damn if it didn't really help with fine navigation and using the phone in the cold!
Different strokes for different folks, I'm just glad we've got options so we can all be (mostly) happy with how things work!
I read on reddit that on Lemmy you can see users’ upvote/downvote history. I therefore expected to be able to see upvote/downvote breakdown by user for my own comments. But couldn’t find this. Does this feature exist or is that a myth?
I've frequently seen 3-4 'equivalent' posts in different instance's implementations of 'technology' (for instance) and the focus of the comments can be completely different. One on an infosec instance will have a completely different perspective than one on a Star Trek instance vs one on a completely generic instance, which leads to some interesting conversations that might get drowned out if everything were mixed together.
For me, I find this to be a large win and if it means I have to open 3-4 different threads, so be it.
Either you get fragmented theads where true conversation is stifled just by there not being enough people to talk to or you get too many people and the little niche conversations get drowned out and/or never happen.
If OP dislikes "community" they're definitely going to bitch about magazines and start whining to try and get KBin to be more similar to Reddit. I think we're better off with them going back to R.
It's fine when it's constructive, but when it comes down to "fuck socialists", "fuck their opinions", "fuck anything socialists make" and "Lemmy World is glitchy" I'm honestly not sure wtf they expect anyone to do with that information.
Darknet Diaries did an interview with someone who was harassed for an Instagram handle and while the harassment for him was low stakes, it was high annoyance and high anxiety inducing.
100%, but the Federated nature would make this difficult, I'd imagine.
I'd love a way to simultaneously:
show someone I appreciate their comment
Help support an instance
Help support KBin development
But, outside of crypto, I don't see an easy way to make that happen and doing it through crypto would bring out the crypto bros and mega-anti crypto joe's in about equal numbers, which would suck (plus, who's to say that an instance admin even wants to deal with crypto to collect a few bucks).
I wrote the first line of code for /kbin on January 14, 2021. Around this time, I started working remotely and decided that the time I used to spend commuting to the office would be devoted to /kbin. Throughout this entire period, /kbin has been a hobby project that I developed in my free time. It was also when Lemmy started...
I agree ... one of the greatest things I've seen in FOSS has been #HomeAssistant growing to the point that Nabu Casa can employee 25 people to work on the project (I have no idea if they're all full time or what, but I know at least a decent chunk are).
If I spin up an instance, whether it stays afloat is between me and the people on my instance, but if we want the flagship to stay up and for our dev to have the time/willingness to make improvements, he needs to get paid. Even just project managing a project of this size is an immense undertaking and just accepting PR's from others can get to be crazy.
I'd honestly prefer to not have to decide between "I want this to go to /kbin" or "Ernest is 'allowed' to buy a beer with this". I'd prefer to donate to something that ensures /Kbins needs are met for x amount of months and then the rest is split between employees of the org at whatever ratio is agreed upon. That's just my $.02 ... I really do appreciate that Ernest wants to be so careful with the fund though, I just don't want the /Kbin account to be sitting multi-thousands of dollars in the black while Ernest is struggling with basic subsistence.

After seeing your note, I thought, "damn, I've used AntennaPod a LOT, I'll donate!"
If you go to donate they basically say that all their costs are covered right now, but ask if you can help in non-financial ways (translations, help on the forum, beta test, code if you can, spread the word, UX work). I'll be honest, that level of transparency makes me love the app more than I already did!
