Thinly cut chips. Fat chips. Crisps.

WIP Wednesday: Sportsball Edition (i.imgur.com)

Last year I decided to knit myself a fun pair of socks from some Halloween themed yarn, but only ended up with one complete at the end of October. So this weekend I finally cast on the second one, and managed a couple of inches on Sunday while keeping up with NFL live chatter across Lemmy and Mastodon!...

There’s basically two ways you can go as a beginner:

1) Play it safe. Practise the basic stitches until general holding the yarn and tensioning gets to feel more natural. For this, something like a dishcloth can be a good shout as even with a few beginner mistakes in it, it’s still going to result in something usable. A scarf can work too but as Anna says, they do take a long time so they can get boring. Hats etc complicate things because they’re in the round, but you’ll be used to that from crochet so it’s probably fine.

Since you are already a crocheter though going back to cotton cloths probably sounds insufferable which brings us to…

2) Jump in at the deep end. Find a pattern you really like, and just set about learning what you need to learn to get there. I wanted to make a whole jumper as my first thing, so made a sort of sample rectangle with all the stitches I’d need and then just went for it! Didn’t quite fit in the end, but hey, the horrible acrylic yarn only cost about a tenner in total 😂

Behold my “first project” sampler rectangle, this must have taken me about a fortnight but it did teach me a lot!

Yarn and needles-wise it’s similar to learning crochet. You want a light coloured yarn in something like worsted/aran weight, and generally a 5mm needle is a good place to start to work with it.

The best thing about circular needles is you can use them to knit flat anyway, so you only need to buy each size once instead of each size in straight, circular and DPN form! Yes I am cheap, yes I stand by it.

Yes, I forgot to mention the app situation (or lack thereof). I saw reference to Thorium in a few Github discussions but was very disappointed by it. A good app would be a gamechanger.

I’m curious how you chose an instance as a viewer? Just based on where the channel(s) are that you want to follow?

Truly is a small world, hah! I’ve heard of NewPipe but that’s as far as that goes really, will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds very similar to my process! Great minds, and all that.

Honestly fair, I found a couple of things to subscribe to but I also did it through Mastodon 😄

Yeah it’s weird, I’m not familiar enough with the project yet to know if these roadblocks are idealogical and done on purpose, or if it just needs someone to come along and help smooth the whole experience out 🤷‍♀️

thegiddystitcher,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Absolutely! I’m not convinced the model could ever really scale like most people would need it to in order to start using it, but I’m very happy to be part of the experiment.

Yeah seems like we had similar first impressions. Your point about people dumping a back-catalogue and then not making new content is a good one too, seen a lot of that myself.

On the other version of this post, the dev actually chimed in and among other things suggested that it might be possible to start enabling global search on servers by default. Which, if this is a possibility I’m not sure why it wasn’t done a long time ago…presumably there is a good reason buried in an old discussion thread somewhere. But it’s encouraging that it is a possibility, at least.

I’m by no means expecting this to become a new YouTube, there’s just not enough content for that. But of course, if people keep not using it because there’s no content, there’ll never be content. So I’m happy to be part of the experiment, and I make new videos most weeks so even once my own back-catalogue-dumping is complete at least there’ll be something new going up there. Even if it’s a bit less “tech and video games” than 99.9% of what people watch over there 😄

(off to watch your Outer Wilds video now, I’m a sucker for anything Outer Wilds)

Huge thank you to everyone who submitted a project for our first theme “summer knits”! I am almost certainly not the only one being enabled, but honestly what did we all expect when we joined this community, we only have ourselves to blame.

Anyway, by my calculations (ie, looking at the counts on lemmy.world where we’re hosted!) the project with the most upvotes was the excellent machine-knitted Purl Soho Criss Cross Top from @catsdoingcatstuff. Congrats to our first ever winner!

You win…um…basically nothing except your project in the sidebar, the awe of your fellow knitters, and also my gratitude for posting something and making the theme initiative look like a good idea 😅

Not really sure if I should make a new sticky post every time the theme changes to draw more attention, or if I should just make an update in this one. Guess we’ll see if anyone notices me doing the latter and if not I’ll switch to the former!

Science!

The gametime stats in Xfire were my first clue that I maybe needed to get off the PC once in a while and, as the kids say these days, touch grass.

Was still kinda proud of myself though. Albeit a sort of shameful pride.

That’s what makes threads like this so interesting to me. I never got into Twitter(despite many attempts literally since it was first released) but absolutely love Mastodon. And sometimes I read these threads and just think…what?

But in reality it just comes down to your individual use case and whether the specific thing that Mastodon is actually fits that use case.

Until this thread, for example, I didn’t know there was such a thing as a trending tab and I didn’t know there was a problem seeing people’s follows because it would never have occurred to me to look.

I use the advanced interface and, while I do follow people, very very rarely pull up the home feed. My columns are all crafting hashtags and my local feed because I’m on a crafting-focused server.

If you’re into following topics, Mastodon is a great time. If you’re into following people or you want to to kept up to date with the outside world then I can definitely understand not being a fan.

Various other crafty hobby type communities listed at lemmy.world/post/1715954 too, for anyone mostly interested in that category of thing.

I know it's not the best answer ever, but fyi we do have this on Lemmy so if it's a super important feature to you there's always that option.
