I didn't expect this to be something I would actually use but I was mildly excited to try it out just out of curiosity. Then it asked me to log in. Login to a fucking terminal emulator. I have no words.

I think OP is worried about keeping their charged phone on the charger just for this feature. I also heard that keeping devices with batteries connected to a charger for a long time is not good because it generates a lot of small charging cycles pushing the battery to 100% repeatedly. I'm actually curious whether that's true for the modern smartphones or not.

FWIW my Pixel has an "adaptive charging" feature that slowly charges the phone to 90% overnight and then tops it to 100% just before an alarm. It seems to be aimed at reducing this exact effect so I wouldn't be surprised if there is something to it.

sajran ,

Wait, so Google just moved around important users' files on their devices without being asked to do so. And now they decided to just delete those files together with the feature? This sounds pretty crazy, even for Google.

sajran ,

Yeah, so basically Google invented a feature that finds your important files and deletes them. The future is here!

Of course I'm exaggerating for humoristic effect but in all seriousness I think the whole action is extremely poorly executed. I would be surprised if there weren't some cases of people actually losing something important because of this.

sajran ,

I was sure I'm getting baited when I clicked the link but it's one of the rare cases when it actually turned out not to be a clickbait.

This feature literally found and isolated "important files" and now they are deleting those files. Just because it was never available in the US doesn't mean it's irrelevant.

We need to remember that there are people making unimaginable amounts of money every time we believe some AI is good enough to replace half of the human workforce.

sajran ,

This is truly great news! I recently migrated my email and calendar from Google to Proton but decided that Drive is useless for me without photo backup on mobile. Linux client with sync is also extremely important but AFAIK Proton Drive is supported by Celeste so this might be a viable workaround (though I didn't test it yet).

I also want to point out that during the short period of time when I'm using Proton Mail and Calendar, they already received a few new features. If they can keep up with this pace of development then I'm honestly fine with paying for incomplete services just to support them.

I really hope Proton will become a one stop shop for secure online services. Fingers crossed!

Good job Cosmic team!

I really hope Cosmic can be the first DE to close the gap between tilling window managers and DEs we have today. Very excited for it!

Nice to know I’m not the only one never remembering how old I am… And I’m only in my 20’s. Before I hit 18 I always knew exactly. After 18 it just doesn’t matter anymore.

sajran ,

leap forwards in tech

It’s a shitty smartphone without a screen.

sajran ,

It doesn’t. I would really like that too…

sajran ,

I’m in the exact same boat. I would really like to use Vivaldi. I’m a sucker for feature rich applications (that a lot of people would call bloated). But I think that giving Google more power by using Chromium is just wrong. And I’m not even the paranoid type, I still use some Google services.

sajran ,

Yeah, no difference whatsoever between those services…

sajran ,

The most important piece of music in my life. My music tastes shifted and I don’t really listen to Pink Floyd anymore but this will always have a special place in my heart. It touches me like nothing else and can bring me to tears. Thank you for reminding me of it!

sajran ,

I see that Framework and System76 were already mentioned. I would add Slimbook and Tuxedo Computers to the list.

I was just in a market for a Linux laptop and I really wanted a Framework but it’s not available in my country so I settled on Slimbook Executive 14 instead. I have it for around a month now and I’m very satisfied.

sajran ,

If you’re on the edge right now - do it! Taking care of my body and diet was the best decision of my life.

sajran ,

FWIW I never experienced any of the above besides the tracking, that’s there for sure.

sajran ,

Off topic but I’m surprised by the amount of smart tv hate in this thread.

I have a Philips TV with Android TV. I use it for YouTube, Twitch, Spotify and occasionally for other streaming services. I actually really like the experience. Everything is a few clicks on a remote away, the UI is clean, it works reasonably fast.

I’m not going to argue about privacy though, that’s definitely terrible.

sajran ,

Yeah, there are reasons to criticize snaps but the fact that it takes a lot of space in some UI is not really one of them.

sajran OP ,

Thank you!

There’s certainly a long way ahead of you, but it’s very interesting and rewarding! I’m dabbling in rust for some time now and I still learn new stuff constantly. I enjoy it more than any other language or technology recently though.

sajran OP ,

Thanks, it’s btop.

sajran OP ,

I didn’t expect a code review but it’s definitely a valid criticism 😁

sajran OP ,

Don’t worry, it won’t be a problem anymore once I’ll fire up Android Studio and Android emulator.

sajran ,

Some people mentioned Framework and I would definitely look into it, however you didn’t specify your country and they don’t sell everywhere in Europe. I was just in a market for a new laptop and really wanted it but it’s not available in my country.

Another options for an out of the box Linux laptop are Slimbook, Tuxedo Computers and Starlabs. I personally just ordered Slimbook Executive 14 yesterday.

sajran ,

The fact that I hate how this looks is a sign that you did a fantastic job immitating the original.

sajran ,

Yeah, I agree, that’s the first thing I thought after seeing this. And now you’re being downvoted. I’m a bit disappointed to be honest, in my head this community was supposed to be better.

Do You Think There Would Have Been a Large Protest if Steve Huffman Just Said We're Charging to Use the API to Increase Revenue?

I've been a long time Redditor and an Apollo user for about a year. I even paid for it. The main draw for me was the lack of advertising. In the back of my head I kept thinking that it couldn't last. Reddit is losing revenue from the lack of advertising views. It didn't...

sajran ,

I definitely wouldn’t be as upset as I am right now. I would consider paying to be able to continue to use the service.

However, right now, I wouldn’t come back to Reddit even if they called of the whole thing and decided to leave free access to the API. I have zero trust in Reddit after all that happened. To be honest I’m kinda glad it all went down like this. At least we got to know their real colors.
