That's really cool. I love the way the global communities are growing on Lemmy.

[Call To Arms] Legado

For people that read their books digitally, they probably all know of Moon+ Reader the de facto industry standard. However I had a couple issues with Moon Reader, none were show stoppers, but just things that I felt could and should be improved. This led me to looking for alternatives, A LOT! Eventually I stumbled across Legado....

I use Muzei and my wallpaper changes every half hour, so I'm not really affected.

But even if I was, so the fuck what? If you're sacrificing your personal enjoyment of your phone for privacy, you're either a secret agent or you're overly paranoid.

Most of us are running adblocking at the DNS level, so what exactly are you worried about?

Paranoia for the sake of paranoia is stupid!

sabreW4K3 ,

Let's be honest though, "don't set a wallpaper, in case they track you" is extreme. It's the privacy equivalent of the £1000 Ethernet Cables.

Is there a FOSS/privacy oriented IoT community?

Is there a community specific to FOSS or just general privacy oriented IoT? With plenty of hardware discussion along with software. Routers, piholes, Meshtastic, anything IoT but open source. If it touches a network but you want it to do something it doesn't. Flashing a doorbell camera with FOSS firmware. Hosting media servers...

sabreW4K3 ,

Are you looking for !selfhosted or !homeassistant

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm on mobile and autocomplete isn't available on this app, but there's some hardware specific communities. Also, this is Lemmy, I know that I appreciate cross-posting, so always do it when you can.

sabreW4K3 ,

I don't really see the point, but it seems to be something people want.

sabreW4K3 ,

It doesn't really matter what instance your account is on. You can make threads here from your kbin account. That's the beauty of the threadiverse. In fact, you can even post threads here from mastodon.

sabreW4K3 ,

Framing it as isolationists is ludicrous.

I love the idea of an Internet without borders, but there needs to be some shared values. That's what the ActivityPub protocol provides a platform for. To suggest that everything we do or post should be free is ridiculous. If the communities of BlueSky and Nostfr want to access our content, why don't they switch to ActivityPub and problem solved?

As a point, say that I write a poem and put it on my mastodon and then bridgey scrapes it and copies it. How do we get that taken down? A picture of my kid? A picture of someone else's kid?

There's absolutely no issues with ActivityPub growing, it can encompass the whole internet for all I care, but that needs to come with the protections, provisions and failsafes that the ActivityPub protocol offers. Bridgey doesn't do that, so again I say… If BlueSky and Nostfr want to pivot to ActivityPub, they're more than welcome, but the Internet I'm trying to build isn't about profiting off of small people without a voice and that's what Bridgey and this isolationism rhetoric tries to do.

sabreW4K3 ,

😂

sabreW4K3 ,

Does it purge on request?

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm saying that if you want Rust application, install Rust.

sabreW4K3 ,

There will always be bad actors, but when everything is working properly…

sabreW4K3 ,

To be honest, I don't know enough about either Rust or Python to continue with this analogy 😂

sabreW4K3 ,

I quite like the way that reads. It sounds like some people within the BBC are quite forward thinking.

sabreW4K3 ,

Reading through that thread, it highlights why I object to blue-sky stuff being posted in Fediverse areas like they're one in the same and have the same values. The fact that someone is stealing content to prop up blue-sky is egregious. That this is being defended is baffling.

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm posting on a protocol whose purpose is to post content to other platforms that use the same protocol.

sabreW4K3 ,

The reality is that a bunch of the content creators are here rather than on a centralised billionaire/VC backed platform. Surely if those content creators wanted their content on BlueSky they would post there. I know for example that I personally declined invitations, so why would I want my toots and Lemmy posts there?

sabreW4K3 ,

Isn't this the same logic used to justify using our posts to train large language models?

sabreW4K3 ,
sabreW4K3 ,

To ActivityPub services. BlueSky doesn't support the protocol

sabreW4K3 ,

BlueSky employs a competing protocol

sabreW4K3 ,

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that platforms you're not a member don't host content you create in order to make it look at though their platform is more popular and vibrant than it is, thus generating revenue of which you're not going to get a share of.

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm actually not a fan of copying Reddit content over to here either. I'm at least consistent that in my thought processes.

sabreW4K3 ,

That raises a point, what is the process regarding DMCA and GDPR? There's no mechanism to delete posts via scraped content.

sabreW4K3 ,

I don't even like the fact that we're forced to train AI via captcha. When we start getting paid for what we put in, I'll reconsider my stance.

sabreW4K3 ,

But with AP, you can purge content. When you scrape content, there's no way to get a purge notice.

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm of the opinion that we don't value our content enough. We should respect it and people. But we should also believe in our community to create its own content. I get so much help here and am so grateful for all the people. I love every experience I have here and I believe everyone can have similar experiences if they stop trying to recreate old experiences.

sabreW4K3 ,

That's a good question. We have the Lemmy platform, but that's built on the wider ActivityPub platform. So I would consider threads part of the platform.

sabreW4K3 ,

If you peruse the fediblock hashtag on mastodon, you'll see that most corporations are blocked expeditiously. The vibe of the Fediverse isn't into placating corporations or having non people in people's personal spaces.

You're free to make an instance, but know that whether it's Frendica, Lemmy, PixelFed or even mastodon, you're not likely to get much traction.

sabreW4K3 ,

I'm looking forward to the Monet implementation

sabreW4K3 ,

Had my Western Digital My Cloud since 2015.

sabreW4K3 ,

And why it integrates with Jellyfin?

sabreW4K3 ,

I was curious as to what this does, so clicked the GitHub and it didn't actually say, so clicked the GitHub that this GitHub links to and that didn't say, clicked the original and found out that the original project is a YouTube video downloader. Cool! But then I went back to your GitHub and couldn't find out why you felt it a good idea to be able to download YouTube videos and add them to your storage? I'm assuming that's what this does.

sabreW4K3 ,

This is the great missing answer. As geeks we get so caught up in the how, we forget the what. Thank you for explaining so clearly.

sabreW4K3 ,

Thank you.

sabreW4K3 ,

Thank you very much. I always feel so ignorant when I don't know things and with such sensitive topics, I always sorry a search engine will misinform me.

sabreW4K3 ,

Everything's weird shit on some level or another. I just aspire toward a world where everyone can comfortably be themselves.

sabreW4K3 ,

How often are you jumping back to Windows?

sabreW4K3 ,

It still has FAT32 support. I think that's the last thing.

sabreW4K3 ,

I would argue that no one should install any snaps.

sabreW4K3 ,

Absolutely agree with that.
