OP is using this to say Israelis don't support the genocide, but they overwhelmingly do. That's why there will be another war a few years down the road, Netanyahu or no. It's like appeasement didn't stop Hitler or how giving up Ukraine won't stop Putin. They will be back. Israel has been giving Palestinians hell for as long as it exists

'My school abandoned me': California university cancels pro-Palestinian student's commencement speech ( www.middleeasteye.net )

The University of Southern California has cancelled a scheduled commencement speech by Asna Tabassum, citing unnamed security concerns after her selection as valedictorian was met with a wave of online attacks directed at her pro-Palestinian views....

No, they mean fuck Israel. It can only exist as a Jewish state because all non-Jews have been stripped of their rights. Make it a secular state with equal rights for everyone, or allow the Palestinians their own state with no Israeli occupation. The current situation is straight up apartheid

Israel is doing it now. This isn't history

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

Of course they expect them to retaliate. That's the entire point. That's why they attacked in the first place. They need Iran to be the boogeyman counterpart in the "help! We're being threatened!" narrative that keeps the extremes in power in both Israel and Iran.

Saying what can't be said: Israel has been defeated – a total defeat ( www.haaretz.com )

We've lost. Truth must be told. The inability to admit it encapsulates everything you need to know about Israel's individual and mass psychology. There's a clear, sharp, predictable reality that we should begin to fathom, to process, to understand and to draw conclusions from for the future. It's no fun to admit that we've lost,...

You're getting downvoted not because people support Hamas' terrorism, but because focusing on Hamas is helping Israel get away with committing genocide on innocent Palestinians

I don't know why you'd pick this particular fight about calling the attacks on October 7th terrorism or not, because that is a fight you're not going to win against the general public. Better to focus on what Israel is doing right now.

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

Even worse when you realize it's the job of these journalists to tell people there's a whole world out there. The general public may not know about this, but if you're a journalist making these claims, they should know better

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

For those who don't know: The Hannibal directive was official policy of Israel to stop abductions of Israeli soldiers by all means necessary, including the death of the (Israeli) hostage. Often summarized as "rather dead than abducted". The name was chosen randomly. Israel claims they no longer use this policy, but this is disputed.

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

What we need is a culture shift, not oppression. I refuse to believe mankind is not capable of improving their collective behavior except under threat of violence - In fact, I think such violence would be counterproductive if the goal is to live in harmony with planetary limits. Degrowth cannot be imposed. Society must want it. Stop being mindless consumers. We can't make that happen by the barrel of a gun. Peace must be included

As long as you realize oppression will only make it harder, not easier, to counter a crisis of human selfishness.

qevlarr , (edited )
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

Suffering can be alleviated but not eliminated. I talk about oppression, which is domination of one group over another, with violence. This happens in fascism but historically also with (ML) communism. I'm saying that using the power of the state to FORCE people to change their ways, will be counterproductive. I'm on board with degrowth, but something positive must replace the consumerism.

The miscommunication is your misunderstanding of the word oppression in relation to ML. I'm talking about a specific problem with the ML "solution" to climate change. I don't have all the answers, but I know ML only makes things worse for everyone.

I want to remind people of a different advice that similarly gets people into bad situations:

"The worst that can happen, is they say no. Go shoot your shot"

Yeah, that's the worst that you think may happen. The worst that can happen is you misjudged the situation and now you're making someone fear for their safety, and you're a horrible creep in the eyes of anyone they talk to. You may get into trouble with your employer, friends, family, you really don't know. And you only have yourself to blame. And don't underestimate the effects of shame (as in: feeling guilty about something bad you did)

I'm not saying flirting is never permissible, but you should set boundaries based on the perspective of the other as well. The advice "worst case, they say no" is not at all asking the question how the other would feel being approached in this way. They may have more to lose than you do

qevlarr , (edited )
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

I'm more saying that this is how some men talk themselves into hitting on someone in inappropriate situations, or (in their heads) blur the line without realizing. Missing signals isn't only realizing years later that she was into you (a cliché story), but also "they're just being friendly, it's not flirting" (doesn't get said enough)

I still get teased about a player claiming bears can't go backwards and I just incorporated it into the battle. It was a one-shot for new players (and new GM). It was fun. Another player got pissed on to put out a fire. Fun times. "Anything goes" can be fun, don't overthink it sometimes

And good for you for being critical. Misinformation is everywhere, don't believe what you see on the internet

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

The voting process is that all other serious contenders are thrown in prison and/or killed, international observers aren't safe to verify the result, protests are forbidden, armed soldiers go door to door, and nobody trusts the secrecy of the vote

Have you noticed there's an armed soldier inside the voting station?

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

Britain is also pretty far on the police state track, if you ask me. It makes sense that these novels are from there. How they are criminalising public protest, journalism (hi Assange!), etc. They don't realize that "see it, say it, sorted" is creepy as hell like it was lifted straight from 1984

qevlarr ,
@qevlarr@lemmy.world avatar

Ask stupid question, get stupid answer 🤷‍♂️

Ballot secrecy only works if everyone is convinced their votes are secret and they won't be punished for a "wrong" vote. It doesn't matter if they can't or won't punish you, what matters is that people are afraid to cast an honest vote. Thus the vote is compromised, regardless of the mechanics of elections in a dictatorship.

It's all a sham, it doesn't make one iota of difference what's on that piece of paper in a transparent box. That soldier is what this whole scene is about. That's not a circlejerk, it's being able to distinguish important from unimportant. You're seeing straight up voter intimidation and your response is "I wonder if this is the actual ballot or an attendance sheet" lol
