Greenwashing, can't believe this even is a question

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Well they are different, so why would it set one if you didn't specify what do you mean exactly

@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Timer counts down time and can be paused; an alarm goes off at particular time and can only be snoozed after it goes off. Alarms take into account timezones and time changes, timers are absolute and independent of "clock" time

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I think if you realize youve been cooking rice for about 7 minutes you will definitely think in terms of time LEFT and not at what time o'clock it should be ready. "Oh it's been cooking for about 7 minutes then it needs another 8"

Yes it is, it's been developed by the GSM Association, but Google does have de facto monopoly in the market right now by their Jio Jibe virtual carrier. RCS can be freely implemented by carriers and device manufacturers independently of that, but so far only Samsung, T-Mobile USA and Verizon did so — everyone else uses Google's Messages. Importantly, different RCS implementations can talk to each other, just like email servers, or Lemmy instances.

Apple has been encouraged to enable RCS compatibility in iMessage in a loud campaign by Google, but they are obviously not very eager to do that, as their own research shows the closedness of Apple ecosystem and messaging system is a main driving factor of sales. This has been revealed in the Apple vs Epic Games case hearings

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

wait you're right I messed up, let me edit that part out. I swear it used to say that Jio runs RCS infrastructure for Google.

edit: It was JIBE

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I meant Jibe and yes I never said Jio or Jibe don't support RCS. Quite the contrary

Has Gboard started changing languages by itself for anyone?

I've been using gboard for a very long time and I use it in four total languages. English is my second language, and my second keyboard setting, one which I use very rarely because I usually type in English using my native Polish setting (with multilanguage input enabled)....

Redmi Note 10 pro running Cherish OS (Android 14), why?

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I tried that already, but disabling English-only keyboard disables multilanguage input in PL+EN

This is fair, but let's hope this doesn't make the FTA-related apps un-uninstallable

You mean the other way round? Wii U hardware being lower than Switch software

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

It is not, there are actual colour categories at the top of the page which allow you to filter by thumbnails. This is what the Red page looks like for me:

Also, I wonder how that works if you’re colorblind?

This was probably a joke but I can actually answer that for you.

First of all, afaik there is no scientific consensus that people see the colours the same way. In fact, we most likely don't. The visual colour interpretation is mostly likely merely added on by our brains basing on the knowledge of wavelengths. In other words, there is no such thing as "absolute blue". There is "a blue" which is the colour each one of us' brains was taught to call blue by simply showing the sky. If I were to look through your brain (but not through your eyes, eyes understand wavelengths), we would probably disagree on each and every colour.

Second of all, there are different kinds of colour blindness. It is in fact an umbrella term for different disabilities. My understanding is that they usually involve a spectrum between two hues. So most colourblind will simply be unable to tell a difference between objects of two colours: for example red and green. They see them as slightly different versions of the same colour. However it would be wrong to say that the person in question sees red as green or vice versa, because, again, there are no "absolute colours". Their eyes cannot distinguish between these two ranges of wavelengths and the brain interprets them as the same colour.

And finally, colourblind people, when diagnosed, are fully aware of being colourblind, and furthermore, they DO NOT see in black and white. Even if a person cannot distinguish red and orange, then they still are aware there is a difference that most people around can tell and that there are concepts and feelings associated with them.

What I am trying to say is that a colour-blind person would probably still be able to, for example, associate "red" videos with action and blood, and "green" ones with nature and calmness, even though this distinction is not palpable to them.

Either way, this filtering with thumbnail colour is fucking stupid.

This reminds of how Xiaomi introduced sorting by colours of the app icon in their launcher. But that was different and I believe actually helped getting around

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

But this is for desktop?

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Then how is this helpful for a feature on the mobile app?

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Then why did you recommend FreeTube in the first place? I'm fully aware of LibreTube, Newpipe and Grayjay, but I choose to use Revanced due to factors mentioned in other comment. Using an alternative clients such as those listed above does not solve the global issue of Google making fucking stupid decisions, even if you yourself are not touched by them because you happen to use Newpipe

This is a necessary reminder that Ecosia is a scam:

  • they don't "plant trees" but rather contribute very little amounts to existing programmes
  • "Every search plants a tree" is a lie. It's not every search, but rather every couple clicks on an ad
  • They use Bing results making them useless

If you're using Ecosia with an adblocker or knowingly skip over sponsored results then you are NOT in any way contributing to the tree-planting

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

clicks on ads

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

their own blog

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

they are not "clear about that". I can see they removed it now but for the longest time the main page had a banner saying "every search plants a tree" and also an actual counter which went up by one every time you made a search -- which was misleading, because it wasn't every "search", because you would have to click on an ad, and it wasn't "every", because it took several clicks on an ad to actually contribute an equivalent of a tree

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

It is a scam if you make claims that "every search plants a tree"

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Qwant?

nudnyekscentryk , (edited )
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

They removed it recently, probably someone called them out on it. And again, searches have nothing to do with funding the tree-planting, it's clicking on ads

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

If fruit trees count then around 50, why?

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Coz they small

nudnyekscentryk ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Kinda. They could suspend warranty if you don't use the vehicle as intended.

And the same should apply to mobile devices: lock me out of your ecosystem, deny updates, suspend warranty, I don't care but simply let me root, unlock bootloader, sideload, jailbreak and all that nice stuff.

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

There used to be an extra switch for linked or unlinked notification+ringer volume. You could use whatever work for you. Now they force you to use separate, which I believe is worse in every way.

Yeah, you can change the launcher, but unfortunately no Android 14 launcher supports smooth gesture navigation or Quickswitch module.

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

If you have Android 13 rooted then you can use Quickswitch module for smooth gesture navigation.

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I use AOSP and it's there.

Sure, fair point, but some notifications are better persistent

It was always combined for me. In fact there used to be a switch to link or unlink them.

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

They had a very specific and useful purpose: notify of ongoing processes. Some apps using them wrong sucked, I agree, but since we have already got a lot of customisation for notifications on a per-app basis then perhaps this should be a customizable thing as well

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Especially since Android 12 or 13 all app notifications require a permission in the first place

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

mate, I am fully aware I can do that, but then I am say at work, where it gets loud at times, and therefore wish to have the ringer and notifications call a bit louder than at home. Not only do I have to do that with two different settings, I can't even achieve that using volume buttons and sound panel, but rather have to specifically go to Settings>Sound each time. it's fucking regressive.

And I know some people prefer to have the ringer call loudly and notifications notify silently, but the point is this used to be customisable! It was a switch between linked volume or separate and it worked fine for years. Why enshittify a perfectly well working thing?!

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Well yeah, "Rules" does this as well, but this only works in repeatable scenario

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

Well, that's some solution, thanks . Guess I will do that as well

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I only have Media (shows by default), Ring and Alarm (after expanding) in there. But then again, I'm running a custom rom, based on LineageOS, based on AOSP

nudnyekscentryk OP ,
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar

I know about it but this doesn't really fix the issue because, yet again, that's merely a solution for a repeatable scenario

nudnyekscentryk OP , (edited )
@nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info avatar
