Being the responsible parents we are, we have Carbon Monoxide alarms in the house, because hey, it's what you do. Right?

Of course, they have never gone off (knock wood), so you do tend to forget that they exist at all.

Well, yesterday one of those alarms decided that it needed to really remind us that it exists, and that it's been ten years since we activated it. Because it's now time to replace it.

Of course, nobody was home - except for the dog. Who is now traumatized by that beeping hell-box that suddenly decided that it was a good idea to tell everybody out of the blue that it needs replacing - at 95dB, just to make sure.

Kidde - I'm sure you could at least start out with just a mild chirp, instead of going full "the bark collar from hell" crazy. No?

melroy ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@torvalds as a tinnitus patient myself, I can't deal with those devices. Because of the exact reason you mentioned. If they create a false alarm it's like 90dB. Which is insanely loud for pets and humans alike!

@nixCraft I notice that generative AI can only code some generic code. Often not good. But when it's getting more difficult and unique / challenging all AIs currently fail pretty hard. They are just not smart enough. They don't understand the context or they don't have the knowledge about it. I'm not afraid of AIs. It's just a simple tool, I'm not worried about it's replacing me. It won't replace programmers for at least 30 years. And I'm not talking about script kiddies. They are replaced by AI

In what world is it acceptable to have a product whose behavior is not reproducible at all? You have no idea what the training data is, what the evaluation data is, y'all write papers about the system "learning" this or that, when your test set might be part of its training set. And these companies can't provide any guarantees for what the output will be for a particular input, and the ways in which it will change, if the output is different for the same input.

melroy ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@timnitGebru if I ask you to write this text again, you will most likely also come up with a slightly different response and text.

Is that a bad thing? Yes, in some cases you need to have the correct answer like 2+3. But not all workflows require this precision. I hope of course llms will improve. But hopefully you get a different inside of the potential.

@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@vintprox I was there in person again. It was very fun to be there again for me personally. It's not only the talks. It's the atmosphere, same minded and open source lovers. Also don't forget the stands. I talked with various open source projects developers myself including but not limited to Mastodon, curl, wolfssl, KDE, gnome, codeberg, matrix.

The talks started on time. But you are correct about questions, there isn't always enough time. However,you're always free to talk with the speakers.

@vintprox I couldn't visit in 2023 due to my health, however I did visit all the years prior again (minus the covid online event which was remote only).

However Gitea's community was not happy about this and created a soft fork that remains fully-compatible, community-driven. It's called and switched to using it in favor of Gitea.

FediTips , to random
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

You don't need multiple accounts on Mastodon and the Fediverse, but in some situations they can be very useful. For example, you might want to have separate work and personal accounts, or specialist accounts, or accounts on different types of Fediverse server with different features.

All the apps support being logged into multiple accounts at once, as do the websites and web apps.

More info about using multiple accounts at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/using-multiple-accounts-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse

melroy ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@FediTips well. Unless you also want group support. Right?

melroy ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@FediTips you mentioned you don't need multiple accounts on the fediverse. Fediverse includes also group support. While I love mastodon it's mainly focused as a Twitter alternative. But not aimed as a reddit alternative. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/139

Which is fine. But keep in mind if you want to use software that does require specific implementation of activitypub you might need other software, which might need another fediverse account.

melroy ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@FediTips I think the main sofware which is used now is lemmy and not guppe. Also I'm the creator of the fork mbin, which is a fork of kbin, mbin is focused on the community.

You just might want to extend that page with more possible options. And mastodon isn't really great in handling groups too bad.

One of the dumbest things Microsoft has done in a while. No, we don't want a Copilot button. Even Apple gave up on the Apple key a long time ago. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2024/01/04/introducing-a-new-copilot-key-to-kick-off-the-year-of-ai-powered-windows-pcs/

melroy ,

@travis exactly. But like you said. It's not just only keyboards from Microsoft. But basically all keyboards have the windows logo. What is happening here? Do we really need some kind of regulation? That would be really sad. Apparently this is needed... Why has almost every keyboard for the Pc the win logo..

@georgengelmann Sorry I didn't follow-up right away, I was kinda busy. I don't think this is my issue. I do have quic enabled, but only one the default server block in Nginx (listen 443 quic reuseport default_server;). For all my other domains I use: http2 on; http3 on;, which should go to HTTP/3 when possible. Yet, in all cases it uses HTTP/2 for all my resources :(...

melroy OP ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@georgengelmann I'm still busy with it. I got some help from @debounced . http3 on; seems non existing anymore. So you need to use "listen 443 quic" on other domain confs. That being said, I still don't get HTTP/3 working. And just yesterday also forked to http://freenginx.org/

melroy OP ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@georgengelmann @debounced I think I found the problem. I was using the official Nginx packages from http://nginx.org/packages/mainline/ubuntu/ which didn't had the ngx_http_v3_module compiled... Omg.

melroy OP ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@georgengelmann @debounced OK I found it now really.. adding the alt-src header via add_header only works in a "location" section in Nginx, despite numerous examples online putting it directly in the server section.

melroy OP ,
@melroy@mastodon.melroy.org avatar

@georgengelmann @debounced Or.. add "always" at the end of add_header line..
