@livus@kbin.social

It's me, livus.

I like to post articles, but I find them myself. I'm a human.

If you like international and eclectic news, come and join me at https://kbin.social/m/worldwithoutus (Link for Lemmy = worldwithoutus or !worldwithoutus).

I've also started helping out at https://kbin.social/m/worldnews and https://kbin.social/m/movies.

Have you never met an AI?

Edit: seriously though, no. A big player in the war AI space is Palantir which currently provides facial recognition to Homeland Security and ICE. They are very interested in drone AI. So are the bargain basement competitors.

Drones already have unacceptably high rates of civilian murder. Outsourcing that still further to something with no ethics, no brain, and no accountability is a human rights nightmare. It will make the past few years look benign by comparison.

This, jesus, we're still losing limbs and clearing mines from wars that were over decades ago.

An autonomous field of those is horror movie stuff.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@HandsHurtLoL wait, are mods not meant to comment? I'm doing it wrong.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Absolutely love it here. Kbin is awesome, and I love the fediverse. I'm way more about content creation here than I was on reddit because I want to be part of this. Ernest keeps making it better too.

I love interacting with all the instances and also I love the access to Mastodon content. I was never on Twitter or Mastodon before but now I follow these cool people I found from my community microblogs.

I never run out of internet, the fediverse has all I need. Yet, I feel more productive irl than I used to be.

A search result took me to reddit last week and was shocked by how many bots, shills, and just how much general anger and fighting is over there. Also they seem to have more dumb or trolling people than I remember.

That reddit blackout did me a huge favour. Never going back. The future is federated.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That was my threshold too but in reality I just stopped.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I still comment a fair bit just from sorting by all > new. But yeah we're still in the early days comment-wise. The magazine I created almost never gets any comments or posts but there are a few lurkers who upvote and it slowly grows.

I've recently taken on a couple that were stagnating due to absentee mods and it's going slowly, but I still think it's important for kbin to have our own chill communities on these topics rather than outsourcing it all to the lemmys.

You must be doing something right, because I'm pretty sure I noticed your mag in my feed the other day which made me realise it's active. (I contributed an article but unfortunately it's on NZ politics because that's the only one I follow)!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Maybe move to an instance that doesn't federate with them? That way you just don't see it.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@kwomp it might depend on the instance that hosts the community and/or you?

Votes are not treated the same way across the fediverse and we're not actually all seeing the same vote scores.

For example, beehaw doesn't have downvotes, full stop. Kbin has downvotes but doesn't federate them - if you downvote me I won't see it, and vice versa.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

.ml = Mali.

I know it was the haunt of scammers when it was a free domain, but the government of Mali have reassigned management now so hopefully it will be less problematic as time goes on.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

at least it can scale better because everyone can be watchful of bad actors.

I think you're talking about democracy there, not capitalism?

If we look at a country with capitalism and not democracy (e.g UAE) I don't think it has any protective effect on transparency.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@moosetwin I know that's the rumour but I suspect they were picking out of a very small pool of free domains and the free part had a lot more to do with it.

Saying the Mali suffix "means" Marxist Leninism is a bit like saying your .com stands for Capitalism Only Mate. I mean sure it does but only in your own mind, not irl.

By the size of her ears I'm picking she's not full-grown yet? I love it when young cats look all dignified and grown up!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Torties are the greatest.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I used to have an "only tortie" too. She was insanely smart and funny.

Yours looks gorgeous. I'm glad you posted her!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That's okay. Literally the only thing I use chrome for is gmail.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, I probably should. I use Thunderbird already but only for my own/website email.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm pretty sure the reason they're happy to send it is because they want other researchers to read it and cite it.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is the way. Also they sometimes go the extra mile and send you preprints of stuff that's not out yet.

Most researchers are into sharing their work.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Me too. In my experience even super successful "star" ones are happy to share.

Palestinian Death Toll in Gaza Tops 13,000 as Israel Repeatedly Strikes U.N. Schools Housing Refugees (www.democracynow.org)

Over the weekend, at least 82 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Jabaliya refugee camp, including multiple United Nations schools sheltering Palestinians. At least 85 incidents of Israeli bombing have impacted 67 facilities run by the United Nations relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in the last two months....

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It absolutely should, but unfortunately Israel is being protected by a superpower.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Maybe. But give decentralised federated hosting a few years. It might never be a rival but it's possible it will become a viable alternative.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think discoverability is in its infancy for the fediverse in general.

But I'm old enough to remember when vast tracts of the internet were hard to find and everyone used directories. When that changed, everyone jumped online.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@silencioso competing with themselves isn't that weird, for example Pfizer makes both Viagra and its generic competitor Avigra.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Well the two people who quit in solidarity must be feeling pretty cool right about now.

The Decline of Niche Communities on Lemmy

I’ve been using Lemmy for a couple years now, and unfortunately I’ve noticed a significant decline in the niche communities that were originally active. When I first joined I saw much more variety when browsing the All feed. But over time, the communities I liked have faded as shitposting and meme communities have come to...

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is the way. I just block all the biggest meme communities and my all isn't memey. All sorted by new is still a great way to find things.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I'm not having that experience. I think you need to be a bit more selective with blocks to curate your all.

Also you're on the most reddit-mainstream of the instances, maybe you should move somewhere smaller and sort by local every so often.

Kbin communities are having new life breathed into them lately, by an update that allows us to automatically remove inactive owners from communities.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Ohhhhhh. Penny drops.

I always interpreted those as meaning "so exasperated with you I can't even finish my sentence".

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I don't. know. whether, to, be, dismayed; or: delighted!

I must be coming across as super aggressive and alpha.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Or... Walken!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That sounds useful. Although I always fix them, I do get tired of squinting at urls looking for the &.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Poor baby. Glad she's got you looking out for her best interests.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

So gorgeous. Although she hates it, deep down she knows she can trust you.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah that brings all the boys to the yard.

Can we all agree on this one thing, that most people hate ai, but the bots on lemmy are an acception since they bring life to the communities when activities dries up.

most people hate ai, but the bots on lemmy are an acception since they bring life to the communities when activities dries up. I mean- am I wrong here?thoughts? opinions?

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This. I only come here because I'm interested in what citizens of the fediverse have to say/think is interesting or important.

If I wanted to know what some bot thinks is important I'd be on a bot aggregate site. Scraper bots are no better, If I wanted redditors to be setting my reading agenda I'd be over there.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

What a cutie. Hoping for more years for you too.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Why does that big red square state near the bottom have so many more squirrels than any of its neighbours?

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

My knowledge is limited to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul but it looks kind of deserty.

Maybe it has the same number of squirrels but way fewer people?

Or maybe squirrels like meth.

livus OP , (edited )
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@JohnDClay yes, good point, if that starts to happen we could tighten the rules further.

By the way, you might like the community I made when I first came to kbin, c/worldwithoutus@kbin.social. It was made as a space for non-US-centric content.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It's a chain letter.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I ended up buying someone 36 books myself, to compensate them for me refusing to participate in this chain letter/pyramid scheme.

What are your thoughts on Microblogs vs threads? (kbin.social)

When I first joined Kbin I posted threads due to being a reddit refugee but have started posting microblogs as time went on. I have also noticed some magazines have more threads while others have more microblog posts. For example kbinmeta has more threads while the most active magazine I moderate has mostly microblogs.

/kbin logotype
livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I really love it. Thanks to microblogs sections of magazines, I'm now getting plenty of mastodon content and even following some mastodon people despite not having a mastodon account.

The part that freaks me out is more that he was in an influential position in children's lives and he was making images of the specific children who were his patients.
