Please share the information about the below as widely as you can - this is a course for the general public, which is super rare!

"Join Dr Manuel Muñoz in a one-day overview of Iberian late-medieval books at the London International Palaeography School. We will explore the evolution of book scripts between the 13th and the 15th centuries, and we will discover what makes late-medieval Iberian unique."

I should also say that @InsularMSS will involve not only studies but also and scientific research: palaeoproteomics, and photometric stereo , handwritten text recognition (), Raman and XRF , infra-red & much more. Perhaps most important, though, will be the freedom and time to do this important work!

Very cool that the oldest known Polish prose text is actually assembled from binding fragments. It really highlights the importance of , and the possibility of more treasures hidden inside early modern book bindings.

Is anyone on Mastodon knowledgeable about Tironian notes? I've got tentative readings of two headings in a 9th c. Text from the Loire Valley, which mix Tironian notes and Latin charaters. But there are 13,000 T. Notes in Schmitz, many of which look very similar. Thanks!!

Some very happy -century fishes swimming around. They appear in a famous early Italian version of Cassiodorus' Institutions, which is one of a number of showing a vivarium: a pool for raising living , here linking directly to the river. It represents Cassiodorus' own monastery, Vivarium - one of the first real medieval Western monasteries – at Squillace in Calabria.

    I'm teaching Gothic cursive to a class of Germanists tomorrow. In the manuscript they're studying the letter h (see red boxes) looks like a curl at the top, followed by two straight strokes at the bottom. How does one get to the point where "h" is written like this??

    (The answer is that there's a process of development, but this playing fast and loose with shape is why cursive scripts are hard to read).

    One of the things that early medieval Insular did brilliantly is to use the shapes of letters to create elegant combinations that look completely natural. In this half-uncial script, the ligatured "gn" in "cognosceris" makes a new graphic shape - which looks beautiful because it seems to flow from the pen.

    One of my students wants to do a project on word separation in manuscripts. The project is very interesting, but unfortunately I have no experience with any Indian languages/scripts. Can anyone recommend

    a) a database of transcribed (not transliterated) Sanskrit texts;

    or

    b) a palaeographical manual for Sanskrit?

    litteracarolina OP ,
    @litteracarolina@mastodon.online avatar

    @felwert @histodons This is a super useful link, thank you! I meant a corpus of transcribed texts using the original characters, not transliterated into Latin script. We need this for the project, which looks (on a small scale) @ working out what scribes did with characters at word boundaries (e.g. merging two words using the last/first vowel). The ultimate goal is working out how to split manuscript words - i.e. palaeography meets linguistics meets DH.

    Can you recommend a good Sandhi splitter?
