The problem with your comment is that you have a lot of opinions, and they all may sound reasonable, but the facts and data give away a different story, and it is hard and takes time to demonstrate that most of what you state is, to say it kindly , false

So I'll take only one of your statements and answer that, and won't waste more time for the rest.

Speed itself is a factor, not the main one, which in my opinion is inattentiveness.

Theory:

  • Impact energy grows with the square of the speed. An impact at 50 km/h carries almost 3 times the energy of an impact at 30 km/h. (source: kinetic energy)
    • probability of death for a pedestrian when hit by a vehicle at 50 km/h is 70%, when hit at 30 km/h is 10% (source)
  • Stopping distance at 50 km/h (23 m) doubles in respect to 30 km/h (12 m) (source)

So, based on the data above, how can speed not be a main factor, especially if we are talking about road fatalities?

So to support theory with fact, there is ton of data on cities that lowered speed limit from 50 to 30 km/h. And data consistently shows reduction in crashes, injuries and fatalities.

I'm not wasting time describing each of the articles below:

I have been having the same issue with Ghost commander. When coping a media file there should be some update if the android media indexing (I don't know what it's called) that doesn't happen. Fir example material files does this correctly.

I think there should be some way to force android to do a media scan, I just don't know how...

Relevant video in which a guy stands still at the side of a road next to a pond:

  • Hands free: he gets a lot of splashes by uncaring passing drivers

  • Holding a brick in his hand: drivers slow down and avoid the pond.

It's really funny:

As usual drivers care more about their car than other people's wellbeing.

BTW: any shop that sells inflatable bricks?

My biggest surprise was enjoying Childhood's End.

What a coincidence: Clarke is one of my favorite authors, and for some reason I was missing this one! I'll read it for sure!

Thank you!

Cars in cities are already dangerous and terribly inefficient. Flying cars would be worse in every sense.

Honestly I thought that, being the article on the European Commission website, was a good enough sign of trustable source.

I added a disclaimer at the top of the post hoping to make things more clear

  • not talking when I have nothing to say. Maybe not the best of the talents, but I appreciate it very much

  • Lateral thinking for problem solving. Colleagues and friends usually are at first confused, and then surprised by the way I approach things

  • Very good spatial and geographical orientatin. Maps are easy read, I don't get lost even in unknown place etc.

Firefox has "total cookie protection" by default, which means, more or less, that the each tab is isolated from the rest of your browsing stuff.

This, in my understanding, is equivalent to having a separate 3rd party app for insta or fb. You can also"install" the web app from Firefox menu, if you prefer a nice icon on your launcher

lgsp ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

In my Firefox (Fennec) setting I’v set to clear all data on exit, is this the reason why I’v to insert saved login credential every time?

I think so, becasue this will clear the session cookies that have the account token in them

So, one solution would be to directly use the anonymous mode for everything (you can enable the option to open links in an anonymous tab) where you don't want to keep login, and by disabling the "clear data on exit" you use the non anonymous mode for insta and facebook. You can also keep the clear data on exit, and exclude the cookies, BTW

lgsp ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

I don't use this method, but I would say that the difference between private browsing and the "clear on exit" option is that with the latter you can adjust what you clear on exit (cache, cookies, history), while with the former it cleans everything automatically.

So what you are doing right now is equivalent to using private browsing. The only thing that would make things more convenient for you is the sggestion to enable the options to open links in private mode in firefox.

How to establish this boundary without pissing people off?

A pair of headsets will do. They could be fake, for that matter.

For some reason people will tend to disturb you more easily if you are working than if you are listening to music 🤷

🏆 Congratulations to the city of Budapest 🇭🇺 for winning the European Mobility Award 2023 ( urbanists.social )

The city organised an ambitious car-free weekend with 10,000 people participating and a Car-Free Day on 22 September 2023. It plans the construction of a pedestrian-friendly car-free zone on the Danube embankment.

serious self-diagnosis is not only disrespectful to anyone actually suffering from the condition

your assumption is that people self-diagnosing is not suffering that condition. Why do you think so? If someone is self-diagnosing, maybe, probably, it is because he/she is suffering. This is one of the main point in the video. Did you watch it?

Also, a lot of people may not have access to a diagnosis, thus making people diagnosed and refusing other poeple self-diagnosis a sort of privileged elite.

But again, the video already answered those 2 points. The anti-scientific one probably in the first minute...

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

Self-diagnosis might be good for you to get interested on the subject and then get a professional take, but that it’s it.

and what if you can't get it?

Killing and stealing are still illegal even if there are people who don’t obey the rules.

I miss the relevance of this sentence here. Can you elaborate?

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

What I meant was, the fact that doctors make mistakes don’t make doctors optional

honestly neither I, nor the author video said that.

The topic (of this thread and of the video) is "is self-diagnosis valid?"

To which I would answer: it depends, valid for what?

  • valid for legal accomodation on the workplace/school whatever? To this I would say no
  • valid for national health system treatment? Again, no
  • valid to have a label for others, to share experiences, to discuss, etc? Hell yes

What do you think about this? Where do you see dangers? Why would you need official medical validation, if you don't need any official treatment/help?

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

I agree with everything you say except with the following

What if you are wrong?

Exactly, what if you are wrong? What bad is it? What would change if someone thinks he is autistic, and he isn't? Why in the first place would anybody think he is autistic if he wasn't?

These are serious questions, not rhetoric ones

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

I think your argument is totally reasonable.

I think your comparison fits, too, but not all flues are the same: for the ones that are light you can handle them with self medication (paracetamol for the fever mainly), and/or you can wait to see if in a few days the symptoms get better or worse, and then you contact a doctor. Does it make sense?

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

if you need specific care, technique to manage your emotions or things like that, you are going to need to know what is your actual diagnosis and a doctor expertise to help you in finding the right strategies.

Agreed

I think this is what defines the validity and boundaries of self-diagnosis.

EDIT: one additional thing: availability of specific care and medical diagnosis force the boudaries a bit out.

I live in Milan. Seeing my city listed as the pinnacle of the mobility revolution is laughable at least.

It's a sign that PR really works well.

Some things got better, but the core issues are still the same as always

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

Yes, you have 5 V. THen you have outomotive 12 V. But now you would have also automotive 48 V. USB-PD is one standard and can deal with different level of power requirements, from headsets up to laptops. And then you can use for other things as well, in a way that can be more practical than dealing with 110-220 V AC.

Is it a monstruosity? I don't know honestly. I trust hackaday in that sense, and they usually praise it, without any hidden reason, I think.

Also, if you read the article, you can see that it is also a continuation of one from a few years back, before USB_PD was widespread. It touches also the points that you wrote. Give it a read:
