I hate this government more by the day. Cleverly even said more bullshit about stopping boats, the cunt.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Have we ever thought they were a solution and not just a stopgap?

The problems are many and the manufacturers are complicit, but EVs do have a use. Right now, they are helping to raise awareness of the problems, the causes and guilty parties. That's a broad effect and if little else it will help to push things along, which is much needed generally.

The other thing they do is help to reduce poisonous emissions around pedestrians and other road users. Buses are a big problem with that and large EVs can make a big difference in cities.

More EVs in cities will help reduce NOx and particulate emissions and that alone is worthwhile.

Until proper alternatives are fully operational, EVs are not the worst thing.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

There are more efficient and better options to decarbonize cities than electric cars.

Yes, I know. What I'm saying isn't about that, it's about raising awareness of climate issues while also reducing extremely toxic emissions around the people who live in cities.

They aren't a long term solution but they have their uses for now. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Yes, that's great and all but until those solutions are realised we can and should make use of what's available to us if there are direct benefits.

If I can use a product of the car industry that doesn't poison the people around me and makes some of those people think a bit more about climate issues, while doing the same journeys I did with an ICE, why shouldn't I?

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

I'm not sure if you realise, but I do agree with you. Unfortunately the problems are bigger than just saying fix it today, get on your bike.

It's going to take longer than we want to make those changes and cars may never go away. As much as things like bikes and public transport are better, for lots of reasons, people like cars.

These problems are political and require political solutions. In the mean time I'll do what I can, and if that includes not using ICE cars then I don't think you can blame me for it.

Where have all the birdies gone?

I've lived in this place in SW Wales for 25 years and, as usual, put out food for the visiting #birds. At the start you'd see a couple of dozen species visiting each day. Just now I fed them and total visitors to table so far = zero. The magpies and wood-pigeons will eventually wander by and vac it all up. The changes are so...

Getting up when my alarm goes off.

I put the alarm on the other side of the bedroom and used one with metal bells. I did it for years and hated it but it worked. Now my phone tinkles next to me and I'm up. Except Saturdays.

Bladerunner.

Me and a friend watched it in a cinema on release aged 13. I'm very tall and my friend looked about 40. (Now he's over 50 and looks under 40.) You could get away with it in those days.

On VCR release, our friend got his dad to buy a copy and we watched it on repeat at every opportunity. I've watched the Final Cut release many times, which I think is even better, and it's one of the very few films I will happily watch at any time.

The documentary about the making of it is great to watch as well. Watch the film first though. I started reading Dick's books aged about 11 or 12 and was already hooked before the film. I think that prepared me a bit, along with other sci-fi I was reading by then.

It's still my favourite film.

You're probably right but I can't help thinking there would just be a different version, equally harmful and controlling, stunting our growth.

I think it's part of us that we have to outgrow as a species. For some reason I'm confident that will happen, given enough time.

I drive a lot in the UK for work. I see it occasionally when younger and/or angry drivers get frustrated with overtaking lane hoggers. Sometimes I also see people do it very slowly and overtly for that same reason.

Generally, I don't think people want to do it and are aware of the dangers. But it's easy to do it without being caught, unless it goes wrong of course.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Smart car 2 seater. Drove it for work for about 6 months. You're a target for bullies, the wind is scary, lorries sometimes can't see you and they can get to 90, which is interesting.

I can live with all that, I've driven vans and lorries that were in much worse condition. I had a Morris van that was so crap it's engine seized trying to do 50.

No, the Smart car was the worst car mainly because I'm 6 6. It was like being a sardine driving it's can. I could do it, but it was not a pleasant experience.

I'm currently driving a Toyota for work. I hate CVT, the whine is headache inducing.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

That's fair, and tbh the Toyota is great to drive. It's a bit sluggish overtaking but from stopped it's like firing a gun and it's got a great chassis. The electric motor gives it the kick and actually does sound really cool.

It's the petrol revving that drives me nuts, up and down all the time. I use cruise control a lot but it still does it. On a long drive it gets annoying. I listen to audio books which helps but I can't take much more, I'm starting to think of ways to kill it.

You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?

I've got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....

Hmmm, <looks at mid 2000s hard drive full of music not listened to in years> I wonder if that thing still works?

I use a OnePlus 12R. It has an IR blaster and a side slider.

The screen is fantastic, the camera is decent, the speakers are fine for a phone.

The OS is fine, there's almost no bloat and I never log in to the OEM account on any phone. The proprietary bits I use are the photo gallery and the side bar, both of which tell you what they do and don't do in terms of privacy. Neither admit to tracking but I'm ok with that.

I'm not a privacy fanatic and I think using any device and/or service these days is going to open you at least partly to some kind of visibility.

Aside from that, I like ColorOS. It's not miles from stock and the options for tinkering are generally useful for getting a phone to work the way you like, without being a Samsung shit show.

The 12R is smooth and powerful. If you can still get them from the OnePlus website with the free Buds 2 Pro, worth £170, for me it's a no brainer. I was also able to use PayPal credit of 4 months at 0% interest, around £200 pm.

The availability and custom ROM support sealed the deal for me but you may find it worthwhile even without some of the points I made.

Good luck!

Excellent point!

As Ben Jordan says, it really is well past the time when we should be making records from stuff that's regulated.

U.S.: Responding to the “gunshot detection” tool ShotSpotter, a Chicago police officer opened fire on an unarmed teenager ( www.eff.org )

Three officers approached the boy’s house, with one asking “What you doing bro, you good?” They heard a loud bang, later determined to be fireworks, and shot at the child. Fortunately, no physical injuries were recorded. In initial reports, police falsely claimed that they fired at a “man” who had fired on officers....

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

How do Americans still allow guns to be so easily available?

Isn't it well past the point where incidents involving guns should almost never happen?

Can nothing be done to stop it?

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for your reply and interesting points. I'll try and argue against them as I see it.

there are so many guns in circulation that it will still be easy to get illegal guns.

True. However, is that a good reason not to make it more difficult? Isn't any time a good time to do that?

A huge amount of the country is rural, and they want guns for wild animals/security/etc.

This is about regulation and those who need guns for certain situations would be catered for. I'm not really aware of similar levels of incidents in Canada, which I think is due largely to regulation.

For any serious gun control to work, the Mexican border would need to be secured.

I've no idea what the figures are, but I'm guessing that a very large amount of weapons involved in gun crime are made in the US. If you take that out of the equation, gun crime will reduce. Border control won't make as much difference as regulating guns, if at all.

3d printed guns

It's definitely a concern, but I'd be more concerned in places that don't have strong gun regulation in the first place.

Passing strong gun laws will be problematic for those people

Good, it will make it less likely for those who shouldn't have guns to get them as easily. If you should have them then you should be able to make a strong case for having them. That's not a bad thing.

while being unlikely to actually reduce the availability of illegal guns.

As I said, I don't see how it wouldn't. Regulation means enforcement. Nothing will stop it completely but making it more difficult will reduce it drastically. And it's not just the supply, it's also the ownership. Making it more difficult to buy and own guns will make supply go down because many of the people who just want them won't bother, it will be too much hassle to be worth bothering with.

my main point is it's not a simple as "ban guns".

I'm not advocating for a ban, just strong and enforced regulation.

2nd amendment and the idea that the American people have a responsibility to stay armed enough to hold their government accountable through force if needed.

How's that going for you? Seriously, you think the people out there committing gun crime are going to join together into some kind of super people's army and take down the government?

Or all the fucked up kids who steal dad's gun to shoot up their school?

No, all the dads will join the neighborhood watch groups and march on the White House. Any time now.

Sorry to be cynical about it but that's nonsense. I do think that Americans should get together and vote for leaders who regulate guns. That would be a good place to start.

ianovic69 ,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

The 2nd Amendment, for one. It's a constitutional amendment that hasn't changed since the Constitution was written, back in 1787.

Isn't that all about bearing arms so that the people can overthrow the government? Yeah, good luck with that. Who are you counting on, the gangs? School shooting kids? Rednecks? Good ol' boys? Are they all getting together and marching in force as one?

ain't happening with today's batshit crazy GOP.

Then vote for people who make those changes for the better. If Trump gets in again I fear for us all, not just you guys.

all of this talk of "banning guns" is unproductive. If you want to make change, start with regulations.

That sir is exactly what I'm proposing. I agree with you completely, Canada being a great example.

What the fuck does this question even mean? Is what "well past the point"?

Good point. I think I was being rhetorical, which wasn't very useful. I just find it crazy that the whole country hasn't got together on this one thing at least. I know it's not easy, but making it more difficult for people to shoot each other must be important to everyone?

Brits have gun bans, and they still have gun incidents.

Very rarely. But that's not a good argument. I'm not sure about this kind of thing but I think that's what they call whataboutism. Imagine if there were less gun crime in the US than the UK. Why not at least try?

    Thank you kindly!

    What lunches do you eat on a weekly basis?

    I'm looking for easy and cheap options for lunches on weekdays. I mostly eat deli sandwiches and hot dogs right now and I always feel like shit after eating them. I think I need something healthier but I don't have time over my lunch hour to cook anything too fancy. What do you all do for reliable healthy easy lunches?

    ianovic69 ,
    @ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

    Yes, with reading glasses and everything bigger!

    No feature can balance that huge con.

    My requirements out way that con by a large degree. It's not ideal but there's no perfect phone.

    I'm using gestures too

    With a case? I have to use a work phone with a flat screen and a case. I set the gestures the same as my own phone for muscle memory and it's often annoyingly bad.

    These things are all subjective, we just have different needs. As I've said elsewhere, I asked the question because I did not know what reasons people had for wanting a small phone. I've had plenty of good answers now, including yours, and I'm glad I now have a better understanding of the needs for small phones.
