Mortal Kombat 1 Players Are Furious With Inclusion of Paid Fatalities ( comicbook.com )

Mortal Kombat 1 players are finding themselves quite upset this week following the announcement that paid Fatalities will soon be coming to the popular fighting game. With the last few Mortal Kombat installments, NetherRealm Studios has added paid content that players can choose to purchase outside of the main game. Not only has...

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

While absolutely too many things are charged for in gaming today (exp boosts? skip potions? cheat armor that was already fully developed at launch? all ways to get your company on my high seas list).... in the specific case where (1) new content is continuously being developed AND (2) the game is not asking for mandatory spending to continue playing (e.g. no expansion pack to purchase, no subscription fees), I don't think the concept of charging for in-game content at all is abusive.

If I buy once and then a year later some optional paid cosmetics or other goodies are added, I think that's permissible. And if I'm in a free to play live service game, I recognize the ongoing dev costs need to get covered somewhere.

I do vastly prefer those companies that give their games TLC and updates for free, and I'm not saying the standard pricing for optional purchases in the modern market are reasonable. But I think the existence of in-game purchases, if not their current state, can make sense sometimes.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

You're writing all live service games as being based on frustration when that absolutely isn't the case, so I have to think you have too many preconceived notions on this subject to actually be open to a conversation about it.

Oh well. No game is for everyone and sometimes the pay content is worth it just because it's damn awesome.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Lol, instead of addressing what argument? Your argument is entirely "nuh-uh, you are frustrated. I know you are because my argument would fall apart if you weren't, so you are. It's just that you like being frustrated."

It's just not the case. There are rare good ones out there, and if that frustrates you into claiming I'm some masochist and therefore my enjoyment is somehow invalid, that's your own whole subscription of issues.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I feel like this is an overly negative light to paint something fans of your game seem to want. There's an undercurrent of "your wish is bad and you should feel bad" to this.

I appreciate that CDPR has a strong vision for what they want their game to be, but I think if I were one of those fans who wanted to see more of the post-ending setting, I would feel a bit gut-punched by how thoroughly dissed and dismissed my kind of love for the game was.

Maybe CDPR is okay with that though ¯_(ツ)_/¯

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I didn't say they should cave to fans save give them what they want. I just think there was a way to say this without being mean about wanting it.

Anyway, I don't have a horse in this race, I still haven't played this. Just commenting on how I think I'd feel if that were me. I've played a fair few games where the ending left me wanting a lot more, and not always because the game was just that good.

So I've heard

Looking for fediverse platform for a minimal corporate website.

Some friends have websites. I encourage them to do. But they have them only to publish contact info, opening times, and a couple of photos of their business. What would be the best fediverse platform for this? Of course being able to post/toot news every now and then, is also a good feature.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I don't think the fediverse has this, but I'm a bit confused why so many of these comments are puzzled at why you would want it. We have fediverse twitter, fediverse insta, fediverse reddit, fediverse discord, etc -- why not fediverse facebook/myspace/carrd? Where users could just have small personal (or corporate) pages about themselves that aren't as blog/news focused on the main(user) page.

I don't even think it would be a huge stretch to implement: a big focus on user page customization with a small microblog interface taking up a portion of the screen would do it. (Disclaimer: not saying easy to create, just not that far out of reach vs everything else the fediverse has).

Are there some women who have higher standards than they, themselves, live up to - sure. But that's not what makes an incel.

An incel is someone who believes:

  1. People of my preferred gender kind of suck, mostly
  2. Despite mostly sucking, people of my preferred gender tend to have high standards <-- you are here
  3. Those high standards exclude me, and I think that's unfair; it makes me angry that they won't give me the chance I deserve.
  4. I'm tired of playing nice when none of them will give me the chance I deserve. I've written their entire gender off as trash, and my new hobby is constantly berating them.

People rarely say #3 and #4 out loud, so once you're at #2 -- which you are -- people are going to start making some assumptions.

And yes, there are some women past #3 and #4 themselves, sure. We've all heard the occasional "men are pigs," and that kind of intolerance shouldn't be accepted no matter who it comes from. But it's absolutely not many/most of us, and if you think so, you're either being overly critical or surrounding yourself with the wrong kinds of friends - both of which are on you and show you need to de-incel your thinking before you go off the deep end.

Just pick a good frame and wiggle the parts in Live2D or something.

The hilarious part is that hoyo is constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be done with live2d; it's heavily used in Genshin character teasers, and their otome game uses it extensively. They're really good at this. Why get AI involved?

How does the change do nothing to combat those interactions when they fall under the $1 sub requirement? The idea is that allegedly bots won't pay, so they won't be able to do those actions anymore.

Fediverse sustainability

I prefer good faith discussions please. I love the Fediverse and love what it can be long term. The problem is that parts of the culture want nothing to do with financial aspect. Many are opposed to ads, memberships, sponsorships etc The “small instances” response does nothing to positively contribute to the conversation....

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

You said you want good faith discussions, but you preemptively dismissed one of the biggest answers because you don't think it's a good solution. Then you have people here disagreeing with you, explaining why, and pointing to examples of it being done successfully, and you continue to completely dismiss a donation as nothing more than a "thank you" - how is this in any way a good faith discussion if any opposing viewpoint is immediately met with this kind of "YOU'RE the problem" response?

I do understand your frustration in those cases in which donations fail, but it seems like you're not willing to meet us halfway and acknowledge that sometimes, donations succeed, and not by accident or luck. There's data there - test cases we could be picking apart and seeing what critical mass needs to be reached before an instance can reliably secure donations and what we can do for admins until their instances reach that threshold. But you're just dismissing it as nonviable even though it clearly works for a lot of places.

That is not good faith.

The same Neuralink whose primate test cases all had to be euthanized after their procedures due to a whole host of problems that were claimed to have nothing to do with the implants? That Neuralink?

Can't believe you forgot the usage limits on how many tweets you can view and how many DMs you can send. I think some of those might have been walked back, but I know people who were holding back from discord because twitter DMs were enough that now rarely go there.

Also all sorts of API functionality has been killed off - embeds, RSS, bots, etc

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

The best time to learn emergency lifesaving procedures is before you need them, but the second best time is when you need them. Being old fashioned about this could cost a life.

If you have a quicker reference people should bookmark for such cases, the kind thing would be to share it rather than judge. Else, panicking people will inevitably go where they know they can usually get fast instruction about any other topic.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

People are clamoring around you in a huge chorus of it's fine just roll with it but frankly, I think your point of view is totally valid. While Larian did a great job making every path a valid way to the ending, you can really only ever lock yourself out of content with your choices.

Go too far down one of two branching paths? Hope you can pass a big fat skill check or two, or that one companion will bail. Hope you didn't like that character or want to see more of that content. (Oh, and if you do pass the skill checks, 10 minutes later the companion is like "ugh no it's fine you were right, forget I ever wanted to go that way even though I've been obsessed with it for the last 20 hours" in the name of railroading the character back in line.)

Get interested in the wrong quest too early? Hope you didn't want to finish the main side objective in that one area. No no, even though all the characters are still present, you don't get to finish it. Because we said so. Shoo along to the next place. Go. Get.

And here's hoping you don't get curious about the "evil" path - you lose multiple companions and a whole-ass cast of side characters that are meant to follow you through the game and gain one (1) bit of interesting new content to replace them. Is it still interesting? Absolutely, but it's a consolation prize compared to how much you lose.

It took me 3 playthroughs or so before I finally felt like I was on a save where I was having a good 80%+ of the intended experience. And yeah, you can replay it for what you missed, but not everyone has time for that, especially in a game this immense. I know I've started it up to make my fourth character about half a dozen times and Alt-F4ed during character creation as soon as I think about going through the parts I've thoroughly combed already.

BG3 is my GOTY by a long shot, but people should have more sympathy for this outlook. There are definitely right paths and wrong paths, and while they all lead to the end, the wrong paths have a lot less to look at and a healthy amount of rubbing your face in the fact that you did stuff in the wrong order ("Perhaps you could have...." ok thanks, narrator).

@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Tears of Themis announced an event that I've been looking forward to all year. It doesn't start til next week, but the trailer hype was a nice boost this week since I'm not super into the other events currently on. It's a Victorian England-ish themed AU. The guys all look delicious in this era's styles.

Also, reminder that October is a good month for spicy fan content due to inktober and kinktober events, so check in to see what's new with your favorite artists, writers, and content tags.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Anything promising among those new additions to the backlog? I'm also more motivated to play otome from this community.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I'm excited for the whole setting in the card stories, because I like AUs. It's fun to see how an existing character molds and changes with a new setting. Even though these stories aren't canon to the game's main timeline, they can still show you a lot about the characters or explore facets that can't work in the main story

Vyn's card story looks great, so that's what I'm looking forward to most, and I'll definitely end up buying his outfit. Love the Moritarty vibes. Not sure if I'll roll for others' cards.

I heard the temporary event gameplay (which takes place in the modern canon timeline on a similarly Victorianish-themed rail tour) didn't go over great in the CN release, but I'm still here for it. MC's chibi in the RPG preview near the end of the trailer looks adorable, and it seems like there will be some rare and fun side characters in play.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Oh that does seem like an interesting twist for Subject: Love!

Emberfate looks like a really interesting concept; I love the idea of an otome+management sim blend, and in a setting I find so familiar too as someone who's been playing MMOs for almost 20 years now. The LI count is a bit low for the super broad audience they seem to be targeting, so I will leave it off the backlog, but I see they're adding a fourth and will keep a distant watch on it in case they continue adding more (or do a future game with more).

Thank you for the recs!

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Article only mentions dungeons. Did they add it for story trials too? As far as I know that's only available for early 4-player trials and a couple of very recent additions. The Chrysalis, Steps of Faith, etc can still wipe a group of human players easily if their mechanics are ignored.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Mhm, that's one of the "very recent additions" I meant. The other being Memoria, but that's a sidequest.

Bit of a sensationalized headline, then. They're almost there, but not "entirely."

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

People see it as a way to spread awareness about the fediverse alternatives that are out there. Like "hey, if you like this, there's more where that came from." It's not for viewers who are already here, but for those where the post inevitably travels.

I dunno. Both watermarking and being annoyed at the watermarks seem like a waste of energy to me. If people are going to generate content, I'm not going to sass them about how unless it makes something about the content worse (harder to read etc).

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Hey man, as long as you had fun.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Are they still working on buffing the shit out of the same modern day protagonist as before or what? I only got about halfway through Odyssey (but looked up the ending) and skipped Valhalla.

harmonea ,

harmonea ,

Everyone's malding over spoilers and not realizing this isn't an actual ending that's coded into the game, it's just a funny side effect of a spell that malfunctioned during the end boss.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

But then they wouldn't get so many clicks and reactions.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

People can also apply the slightest semblance of critical thinking and realize most gaming journalism outfits, no matter their questionable quality, will realize they won't last long if there are true spoilers in the titles. Therefore this isn't really a spoiler.

Like they're obviously going to phrase things in ways that get more engagement, which is why it's a crucial skill on the internet today that readers need to think critically and not just accept headlines literally.

I'm not saying it's right, but jfc man, you have to develop skills to engage with the internet you have, not the internet you wish you had. I really feel no sympathy for people who thought this was a spoiler. At least this is a cheap lesson in gullibility instead of a costly one.

Need Help! Hope this is a good place for this! ( i.imgur.com )

Hi all! I was hoping someone could give me some advice! I have a new momma and six squirts, five days old. I made her a birthing box and she liked it for a bit, but now she keeps moving the kittens to a place under the bed where it’s kinda dusty and feels like a bad place for babies. I would move them back to the box and five...

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Everyone has given good advice, but I just want to remind you:

it’s kinda dusty and feels like a bad place for babies

They evolved to do this without much human intervention in all kinds of outdoor conditions. Have their lives been improved by domestication and human watchfulness, yes, absolutely... but they'll be okay. A little dust will not be a serious hazard.

It's kind of you to care so much.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Guessing you didn't see the recent news about Epic doing a big layoff and shedding properties recently?

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

No, there was absolutely no claim that it was an innocent mistake, I'm not sure why that was written there. It's just a promise to look into it, no more no less.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Huh. I guess you're one of those that waits for people to tell you things in the comments, makes weird extrapolations about it, and jumps to conclusions rather than just clicking the OP link and absorbing the information there?

How did you even get that from what I said?

And literally the second tweet the dev made was "they've never sent any replies to me" so he's clearly been trying?

I'm usually more understanding of people missing information, but it took you more time and effort to jump to these conclusions and write a totally incorrect defense of Epic than it would have to just see that the info is right there.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

The procedural content especially is, like, antithetical to the formula.

Agreed; I don't even understand why procedural generation is popular anymore. It was novel in its first uses, but where devs see convenient shortcuts and marketers see "infinite replayability," I see "this shit is all going to feel identical after like 5 tries tops."

Oh look, it's the skybox from 3 planets ago with the ruin from 2 planets ago and the enemy selection from 5 planets ago. And I think this might be a new shade of blue in the grass, or is that just the skybox casting a weird hue over everything?

Much refreshing, very discover, wow.

Still Tears of Themis. Vyn's birthday just happened. The event was adorable and much more suggestive than I expected now that we're in year 3 and engaged.

Genshin's update this week came with a nice new husbando to gacha for, so even though that's not a romance game, I still appreciate it.

Perpetually on the to-do list: Finish Collar x Malice fandisk

My account seems broken? :\ For the last month+ I can't get any thread I create to show up in its magazine, even when the magazine is a local one. Comments are fine, microblog posts are fine, threads show up in my profile but never the magazine.

Spoiler markup unfortunately doesn't appear to be working as intended for me. Might have to do with a userscript I installed for more options, but I was also concerned about friends outside kbin as well. Thanks though!

I agree that otome is generally niche enough to not catch too much flak, but I sure have seen some takes about the more popular ones. (Maybe I'm just bitter deep down that my favorites get bullied when "worse" stuff is out there; if people are going to violate "don't like, don't read" can't they at least prioritize?)

Glad the review was of interest to someone or another :)

harmonea OP ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

My top LI of all time is Vyn from Tears of Themis, and I constantly see the Internet shaming him because his career is portrayed poorly (psychology is treated very differently in the east where the game is written to begin with, and it's clear no one on the writing team is in the field). But this is in a game with a Rembrandt-tier artist who also runs one of the biggest companies in the world at age 21, a master of all trades detective hacker spy Bond-gadget-maker biologist supersoldier, and an elite lawyer whose area of specialization is literally every field of law and whose win rate is 99.9%. But no one picks on their professions being unrealistic; instead we have to dissect whether the psychiatrist's degrees are legitimate and point out all the times he violated HIPAA (a law that doesn't exist where the game is written) and go tsk tsk, shame, toxic at his bedside manner when the current story's antagonist happens to be a patient.

And that's not even touching personality flaws. Don't get me started on the "red flag" commentary that ignores all the others' flaws. Characters need to have flaws to be believable, but for some characters this is unforgivable.

For other otome I understand a bit more given my usual type (anyone with a comfy cage or basement lol) but I still tend to always be drawn to the ones people say are disturbing and you must need therapy if you like. Maannn it's fiction, it's not hurting anybody. 😩

harmonea OP ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Yes, I do understand there are reasons (like "closer to home") that people feel it's okay to apply a double standard, and I still feel that doesn't actually justify it. And while people are free to discuss characters' flaws, it's utterly exhausting when it's always one character's flaws, and almost never from a character analysis point of view where a poster takes a moment to understand why those flaws are there and what kind of character arc it gives us the chance to see.

Anyway, roaming off topic. I think at least with the reviewed otome, there's some high quality "everybody sucks here" that would mostly prevent a single LI from being the punching bag, were it ever to reach the same audience. That's unique!

harmonea OP , (edited )
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I hardly think I need to give up my double standard about being uncomfortable with X character flaw but not Y character flaw when it comes to my subjective enjoyment.

I never implied this, and with respect, I've been growing increasingly uncomfortable with the pushback into new contexts here for a few comments now. The double standard I speak of is with regard to unrealistic professions and how people's personal relationship with psychology makes them think it's okay to pick on one LI's approach to his job without taking the time to understand none of the professions are making any attempt at realism. If that closeness to home is the dealbreaker for that LI for someone, that's fine, but it doesn't make him somehow objectively the worst as people like to portray.

I never said people can't have opinions or they have to tolerate all character flaws equally. I'm just tired of purity police with two-year-old surface level takes still feeling the need to bring up the same points as always about the game's whipping boy, and never with an eye toward why people still enjoy it, how it works in the character's favor, or how it compares to others' flaws.

Maybe it’s because I’m running on not enough hours of sleep, but I’m not entirely sure I understand what you mean by this part:

I was talking about Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains here. If it had the reach of other larger otome, there wouldn't be one single most hated character because everyone has a hard-to-forgive flaw.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

none of the self cleaning ones really work properly, do they?

Uh, yes they do?

Or do you neglect your appliances as much as you neglect your animals? They do still require some human intervention to empty their waste, so you still can't ignore them even if you're dealing with it less.

You accepted this responsibility when you took in a cat. I hate it too, no one likes playing in poop. You aren't special or alone in this. We all find a way to suck it up and get it done because we love our pets, and if you can't, you aren't fit to be a pet owner.
