Yeah, KISS is amazing, versatile and simple with a small footprint. It honestly should be the default throughout Android.

Use Gluetun. Love Gluetun. Gluetun is the answer.

Alright, alright Hypno-toad, you got me! 😅

Jokes aside, this is probably the most convincing writeup I've seen in favour of Gluetun. Thanks, will give it a go!

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Sure, but again. That is only legally binding in US jurisdiction?

There's always a good reason not to put another crypto mining cluster into the world.

I have the LibRedirect browser add-on installed which uses proxigram.

It seems Instagram are doing their worst to swat third party access overall so it's not a perfect alternative. Still beats getting tracked wherever you browse, though.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

If the way you navigate online life is based on your reflections regarding safety, convenience (and anticorporate, possible anticapitalist sentiment), why not pass your advice on? It might save your kids from getting caught pirating.

I'm curious about this because I had a bunch of dracut warnings when I updated my EndeavourOS to 6.8.7 the other day. Seeing this doesn't make me too keen on rebooting until I've updated without error messages...

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Don't cut yourself in that edge, kid 🙄

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

"So... What can you do with it?"

"Nothing. It"s perfect!"

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Oh, in the end I just pulled a $ sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force to generate a working initramfs. But did you find a solution to your problem? Glad you found a fix!

The need for a Fedi Union.

tl;dr I propose a Fedi Union consisting of the developers of Phanpy, Pixelfed, Peertube, Lemmy, and PieFed. That will work as a way to fund all of the services collectively (with the option to still go to their individual patreons and fund them seperately) and as a way for them to communicate to help all the services be more...

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Phanpy, a mastodon frontend is somehow going to co-lead a battle against Meta? I'm not at all against unionising, but it sounds like you're cherry picking whatever you personally happen to use as representative of the fediverse.

I frigging love markdown for everything!

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

That'd be nice of course. Personally, I just wish everything Microsoft would wither and go away.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

I came here to say matrix but I'm not gonna lie. If XMPP had gotten the traction it deserved we wouldn't need matrix.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Was it really back in 2009 that both Google and Facebook used XMPP compatible chats? Those were the days.

It's basically ubiquitous in academia

You mean STEM. In the humanities we do just fine without, tyvm.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Just set up pandoc and Bob's your uncle. It'll convert markdown to anything. You'll never have to open another word processor.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Pandoc + [your markdown editor of choice] is magic. Some editors even come with Pandoc as a dependency so you can export to more or less anything from the GUI. I think GhostWriter and Zettlr at least (I honestly can't be sure, I've changed editors so often and now I just have some Pandoc conversion scripts in my file manager menu).

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

@fediverse

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

the real fediverse uses activitypub

Well, yeah. There are a few interoperable protocols but activitypub is certainly the major mover and shaker. Friendica and Diaspora doggedly stick to their own protocols afaik but they manage to still federate to the larger fediverse.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

You probably already looked into the Separate+ plugin? But yeah, even now native CMYK support is lacking because — chicken, meet egg — there hasn't been a lot of support from the graphics industries toward development of that feature.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Unless you're talking artwork for professional print shops, people have been printing out RGB pictures for decades. Otherwise, imagemagick will convert the files for you in a single command (note that this solution has also been available for at least 12 years). All you need is the ICC profiles.

Heck, any print company worth their salt will convert the colour space of your file(s) for a fee if all else fails.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Mint might work but in my experience the big snag with older hardware is the desktop environment. I've had the most success with really low end DEs like Openbox (technically only a window manager I believe?). That frees up what little RAM is available for other processes.

Jeez, remember when Nextcloud did only a couple of basic things and did them well? Scratch that memory and give a round of applause to the still-growing Bloaty McBloatface.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

"A bit better than the official Mastodon app" isn't high praise, though. Kudos to Eugen and all other devs for the work on the Mastodon server but their mobile app is absolute shite.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Many of the clients don’t even have a sign up option, you need to sign up elsewhere first.

It's inconvenient, sure, but think of it as an assurance that you're not locked in with one app.

That said, I completely agree that Matrix and Element need to work on UX, particularly making it easy for new users to adopt it as well as verification/device switching.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Well, counterpoint: Photoshop tries to be an "everything for everybody" app, and GIMP/Krita don't need to compare to that, as little as any user needs all the features of Photoshop.

Nobody can avoid Photoshop

Call me nobody, then. I worked with the Adobe suite professionally for 15+ years, haven't touched it for the past six. You won't find a single 1:1 replacement. It's just a matter of quitting and accepting the individual limits of different alternatives.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Plain banking apps for smartphones. Having those developed in the open would hopefully make it possible to have forks that work on rooted devices without hiding magisk and whatnot.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Not much, honestly. Fortunately I was never very reliant on vector graphics.

Inkscape IMO never really matured to a working solution, certainly not comparable to Illustrator, but I know others have better experiences.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

It's absolutely that, like the office admin workers who swear by Microsoft Office over open alternatives no matter how insidious Windows becomes. "I know this one tool and you will have to wring it from my cold dead hands"...

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Yeah, Jack-of-all-trades here as well. For sure it's less convenient to have to switch programs for different purposes but there is also the added convenience of not having to find pirated and cracked Adobe warez.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Sure, I guess. Not what I was after but it has potential in its own right.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Same here. I guess it's just an AOSP standard but it has all the clock functions I need.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Glad I'm not a musician making entirely forgettable, generic novelty songs because that niche is now covered by prompt writers 😄

I like the idea of this particular song and would love for some human mellow jazz singer to have had a spot of viral success with it. The quality of the product is quite eerie to be honest!

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

I mean, I do love a so-bad-it's-good novelty song so why not?

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

If you just want to preserve it (and the software is not currently in commercial supply), upload it to archive.org?

halm ,

"Deck" is just jargon for a slideshow covering the key points investors will want to hear. Some search results to get you going.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Or, or it actually is a pyramid scheme that has conned people out of life savings. Hanlon's razor, no "psyops" required.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

You're right and you're wrong — mostly the latter.

Yes, capitalism is its own large con game but you cannot in good faith compare inflation with the risks of unregulated speculation and flat out scams inherent in cryptocurrency.

At least there are (arbitrary and insufficient) securities built into traditional economic systems to assure account holders when banks crash or fold. There are no such regulations with crypto and, as the linked piece points out, crypto bros only pay lip service to the establishment of such investor insurances.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

I have some bullshit to trade for your bullshit, can I bullshit you into raising the bullshit price of my bullshit over yours?

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

One of the big points of traditional banking is that nobody wants the hassle of (or should be trusted with) being their own bank. Crypto doesn't solve that in the least.

I actually practice what I preach

Thought you might. Nothing says "I drank the kool-aid" like dropping "fiat currency" into a casual conversation. Anyway, good for you until you have to pay for real world stuff with your Fantasy Wall Street scrip.

halm ,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

Ooh, horse, is that the next organic fertilizer coin™? How quickly can I flip my bull into that?
