I always thought that LCARS was a very cool display system, but after studying UI and UX design, I’ve come to find that it’s actually a pretty bad HUD for at-a-glance information display. It’s ok for displaying certain types of information and arrangements of certain controls, but it was designed by the Okudas in the late 80s. We’ve come a long way since then.

What it is very good for, however, is looking really cool on screen. They’ve updated it over the years to include spiffy, animations and such. It still looks pretty futuristic, even though it’s almost 40 years old.

    It is because he owes it to the state of New York and has to pay it within 30 days, or the state will start seizing property, placing liens, and garnishing his wages. There’s no delaying, or wiggling out of this. This is the end of the line, at least for half a billion dollars for Trump.

    The best help he can hope for is a bit of chump change from some donations, but the vast bulk of this he’s going to have to pay for himself one way or another.

    Edit:

    The 2009 Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act created a federal law criminalizing violent acts against people due to their religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation or disability. The law gave, among other things, federal authorities greater flexibility to prosecute hate crimes that local authorities choose not to pursue, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. But prosecutors did not pursue a case centered on a victim’s gender identity until several years after the law’s enactment.

    Advocates tried for over a decade to pass what was, at the time, The Matthew Shepherd Act after the tragic 1998 killing of Matthew Shepherd to make the killing based on the victim’s LGBTQ+ status a federal hate crime, but the bill that ended up getting passed - one of Obama’s first and a campaign promise - was far more robust, and included all minorities.

    Yeah, apparently, because it was some small business owner, she only invoiced the order, and didn’t have some elaborate no cancellation policy in a contract for an order that size. It’s terribly unfortunate, but she probably should’ve known better (as a freelancer, myself, I once had to learn this very lesson the hard way, although it did not cost me nearly so much). I guarantee she’ll never ever make that mistake again, but, sadly, it may be because she is now going out of business.Tesla are such shit for doing this to her, and the very least they could do is pay for their order.

    gregorum ,
    @gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

    yeah, well, that’s all fine and good if she could afford a good lawyer to take up her case, but she’s financially screwed because of this and is already struggling to even keep her business open. rich people can afford to just sue everyone who makes them mad, but small business owners like this lady who went out on a limb for this huge order and got screwed may not be able to afford to shell out the money it would cost to engage in a lengthy lawsuit with the legal powers of Tesla.

    so, what the law allows her to do and what she is practically capable of doing are probably two very different things in terms of her being able to seek legal remedy.

    gregorum ,
    @gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

    see, this, then, gets very tangled in the terms of the agreement, and - as there seemingly were none - and lawsuit could get dismissed. or a judge could decide that Tesla is liable anyway, and then Tesla would appeal, costing the business owner even more in legal fees.

    if Tesla was ever going to pay the $16k, they would have done it long before engaging in a legal dispute that will end up costing tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars more. at this point, it has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with fucking this lady over as hard as they can to punish her for embarrassing them.

    gregorum ,
    @gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

    the point is that there's a difference between a legal path for her to pursue her claim and her potential financial ability to do so, and that this represents a fundamental inequality of the application of fair justice for those who can't afford it.

    Nazis mingle openly at CPAC, spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories and finding allies (www.nbcnews.com)

    At the Young Republican mixer Friday evening a group of Nazis, who openly identified as national socialists, mingled with mainstream conservative personalities, including some from Turning Point USA, and discussed race science and antisemitic conspiracy theories.

    How do you spread Nazi rhetoric at CPAC? Sell merch? Because one would think market saturation would already be at 100% for that sort of ideology at an event like that.

    if it worked, there would be no unemployment.

    They give people Housing, Basic Medical Care, Meals, Books, an Allowance, Clothing, and a Network of instructors and peers.

    also that

    before “but it needs funding!”

    yeah, no shit.

    to OP: there isn’t a problem with a lack of programs to address societal shortcomings, generally speaking. the problem is with the Fascist party pathologically defining and sabotaging hem because the entire philosophy of their party is hat anyone who isn’t a straight white male deserves to be poor and to suffer because they aren’t, and so they will do everything to make sure that “those people” will always remain poor and suffering. and their constituents, who also believe that and can consolidate their wealth and power at the top in their in-groups by continuing to elect like-thinking politicians, perpetuate this power hierarchy.

    that’s conservatism.

    no, just that, if it worked properly, they would be

    laziness and compromises from the legislation to the execution ensure that these programs are sabotaged. everyone along the wya benefits is some corrupt way, and the people are the ones that suffer.

    this is the method by which private interests sabotage pubic institutions. slowly, a death by a thousand cuts. then they slowly cut funding, watch the institution collapse, and then say, “oh, look how ramshackle it is. let’s built private institutions instead.” Then they control those with religion and science denialism. and refuse vaccines and discriminate against lgbtq+ students. and erode public trust in public institutions and democracy.

    and that’s what conservatives want, because they never wanted or liked democracy because they want and like the hierarchical philosophy of society rather than a philosophy of equity and democratic values and distribution of power to the people. and, historically, they’ve fought every shift of power to the people and have even sorted a civil war over it. don’t think they won’t again.

    gregorum ,
    @gregorum@lemm.ee avatar

    So you just want there to be more funding for this? I don’t see how social programs like this are conservative.

Oh, and for those who foolishly, and stupidly believe that this is pointless—hehehe… no, no… the cruel and vicious deaths of trans children are the point. and they will continue. Really… what can you do to stop us?” said the School Chief in a comment to a local news correspondent, frozen is shock.

    Sometimes I have to stop strangers on the street just to show them when I just read on my phone, because I don’t fucking believe what I just read on my phone. This is one of those times. Three other people just said, “what the fuck” because they couldn’t believe what they just read. I just shared shocking disbelief with three strangers.

    2. he doesn’t need to because he is able to employ (and even invent) a litany of racist dog-whistles instead to get his points across.
    3. the man is such a blistering boil of pus and hate that the N-word is… forgive me for saying… beneath him. His racist rhetoric operates at a much higher level than simple slurs.

    edit: wanna know the fucked up thing? I went screenshot-hunting on the googles, and I ended up finding an ancient reddit post I made. I couldn’t sanitize the rather awesome reddit account of mine because the fuckbag reddit shits banned it years ago.

    I was OkToBeTakei on reddit (among about a dozen other prolific posting and commenting usernames over 18 years, as well as mod of a few notable subs). I made the username as soon as George Take made his video saying that it was Ok To Be Takei in response to Tennessee’s “Don’t ay Gay” bill passed in, 2011. I Mae the account both in protest of the law and to honor Takaei’s stance. link to video.

    anyway, here’s the original reddit post about Miles O’Brien and this sonic scewdriver-like device, and me briefly discussing Doctor Who references in Trek: link

    I wish I could find the link from this account about a rather amazing r/DaystromInstitute essay I wrote about Dukat and another about Damar, each about 7500 words, and each that won M-5’s post of the week which I no longer have copies of. Some mod may have archives of them, but they’re now lost to anyone else. They were good.

    fuck you, reddit.

    it’s unlikely he’s even a billionaire now, as that valuation is entirely based off of what now is revealed to be entirely bullshit estimations pulled directly out of his ass of his worth. the fact that he cant’ even come up with a fraction of that in cash (he could barely come up with $5M for the first E. Jean Carroll judgement and is struggling to produce the $84M for the second) speaks volumes to that.

    And, while he s certainly going to have to liquidate a great deal of his holdings to produce that cash necessary to pay for these judgements, it may turn out that:

    1. the percentage of his ownership of many of his real estate holdings is not sufficient to cover the total sum of the judgements against him and,
    2. he may already be leveraged on those holdings (mortgages, etc.) to banks, etc. so that their value is even less than his ownership stake, making them worthless in any sale.
    3. he may already have other undisclosed financial obligations which further impede his current financial standing.

    the fact is: nobody knows how much Trump is truthfully worth but Trump. even he may not know, however, we are all about to find out, at long last.
