What's your source that he is a felon? Can't find anything about that at all.

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

exscape ,

FOV slider and option to disable head bob if present. Games with a too narrow FOV and/or head bob are unplayable for tons of people who suffer from motion sickness, and it's such a shame to have so many good games ruined by it.

exscape ,

This is less of an issue in multiplayer games, as they rarely have very narrow FOVs by default. The worst offenders are often console ports and slower first-person games.
FWIW while it's a competitive advantage with high FOV, if there is a slider, it's still fair since everybody can use a higher FOV if they want to.
It's not all advantage though, aiming gets harder (aside from the distortions).

I don't see why it matters at all in single-player. So what if it makes the game easier? Who cares?
The fact that I don't have to stop due to almost vomiting also makes it easier in a way, but I really don't mind.

The fact that the optimal FOV differs on a per-player basis is of course exactly why I want a FOV slider everywhere. I usually prefer about 105 degrees horizontal (in 16:9), while some modern games default in the range 75-85.

The strange thing is that I've never seen any kind of AdBlock notice/warning on YouTube, ever. I'm also using uBlock Origin.

exscape ,

I'd love to use Jellyfin instead of Plex, but the LG webOS client has literally never been updated. The first public version from July 2022 is still the latest version, and it's not really there yet.

exscape ,

Honestly it's been a year since I tried it now so I don't remember everything. One thing I really feel is crucial is turning down subtitle brightness in HDR. Plex allows for grey subtitles, which in HDR look white, except not at 700+ nits. They literally light up the room in dark scenes, and it's extremely jarring in dark scenes (with APL of 1 nit or less).

exscape ,

I'm aware, but I don't think that code will affect the webOS version unfortunately. And even if it does, the app needs to be updated first.

exscape ,

Oh! That's awesome. I'm that case I'll either try it when the release containing that commit is out, it maybe even earlier.

exscape ,

Why would they plug the phone to a PC via USB AND set it to webcam mode AND record or broadcast in a program on the PC if they didn't want people to see?

exscape ,

Skyblivion and Skywind are a thing. Hopefully they'll be released at some point too though...

exscape ,

z is for gz files only though, there are plenty of others. xf autodetects and works with all of them (with GNU tar att least).

exscape ,

ps aux says hi!

exscape ,

94 Mbps is basically exactly what you can get from a 100 Mbps connection after overhead. 93-95% or so of the theoretical maximum. Something's wrong and you're getting a 100 Mbit/s connection.

exscape ,

How is that relevant? RTX 4080 is not a the minimum requirement for Starfield.

exscape ,

There's no RT in BG3. At least not yet.

exscape ,

Yes, DLSS Frame Generation (which is a component of DLSS 3, not the entire thing) is only for the 4000 series.

exscape ,

Last time I saw this headline my brain just skipped "least" and read it as the buggiest game to date.

exscape ,

History search is built into most shells AND it's interactive. Try hitting Ctrl+r and stay typing. Ctrl+r again to go to the previous result.

When you find the one you want, either hit enter to execute or use arrows, Ctrl+a/home or Ctrl+e/end to start modifying the command.

exscape ,

I used it probably a month ago, too.

exscape ,

Mine is doing it too, and I never voluntarily watch any right-wing-related content (not even anti-right-wing). It's usually anti-trans rhetoric it tries to push on me.

exscape ,

Nice! I started using it just this week. I built a computer to serve as NAS with Debian and ZFS.

I'm also considering moving my Ubuntu based server to Debian; it gets too many package updates that I frankly don't care about, plus even Ubuntu server feels a bit bloated.
I moved from Gentoo to Ubuntu a few years ago precisely to reduce my workload; I just wanted it to work... and now I'm considering Debian for the same reason.

exscape ,

The key words are "delivered to the target". They use WAY, way more power than they deliver to the target, so if you take the energy generated divided by the total energy used, the number is WAY, way below 1. Probably a fair bit below 0.1 too.

exscape ,

I know this is /c/memes, but do you use any memorization techniques? Spaced repetition is a basic but extremely useful one.
Cramming is terrible for learning because you need to repeat things with longer and longer intervals to truly remember it long-term. Thankfully learning with this method can be LESS work even though it's much more effective.

exscape ,

I wouldn't say it's overhead. When you zoom a bit it's more like a third party view, except you can move the camera around.

exscape ,

Well, almost no losses. No resistive losses. Should still lose some because of electromagnetic fields surrounding the cabling interacting with the environment.

exscape ,

Actively, no, but I haven't dropped it 100%. I occasionally visit when I find links via Google, and check some discussions about a few current TV shows that are basically dead on Lemmy/kbin.

Just under an hour a week in total (according to ActivityWatch), down from hours per day.

Google employee responds to all the negative feedback WEI, (google drm the web) (github.com)

Hey everyone, thank you for your patience, and thank you to everyone who engaged constructively. It is clear based on the feedback we’ve received that a bigger discussion needs to take place, and I’m not sure my personal repository is the best place to do that - we are looking for a better forum and will update when we have...

How is that a contradiction?

The Open Internet (OI) is a fundamental network (net) neutrality concept in which information across the World Wide Web (WWW) is equally free and available without variables that depend on the financial motives of Internet Service Providers (ISP).

Open is not the opposite of private. You can have an open internet where your information is not shared with third parties, i.e. private.

The name, and domain. It will be x.com with the X logo, and no birds anywhere.

People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?

Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...

exscape ,

It's about saving space, not money. The jack is relatively large compared to other smartphone components. It's bigger than a USB-C port, for one, when you consider the volume and not just the width.

exscape ,

It is after all a Large LANGUAGE Model. There's no real reason to expect it to play chess.

exscape ,

A different kind of advice: be vigilant with security updates, and remove services you're not using.
Using insecure software makes it likely you'll get hacked sooner or later, especially if automated scans can find your server. (For example because it's listed in a search engine, or part of some network like the fediverse).

exscape ,

The first doesn't work, it suggests the dog wants "eyes" to give it its food. I think #2 is the best.

OpenAI says it could ‘cease operating’ in the EU if it can’t comply with future regulation (www.theverge.com) Japanese

In addition to the possible business threat, forcing OpenAI to identify its use of copyrighted data would expose the company to potential lawsuits. Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and DALL-E are trained using large amounts of data scraped from the web, much of it copyright protected. When companies disclose these data sources...

exscape ,

FWIW that's pretty much exactly how all creative works are created. Especially music.

exscape ,

Do generative AI models typically focus on ONE person's style? Don't they mix together influences from thousands of artists?

FWIW this is not an area I read up on, and so I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.

exscape ,

Nope, not in Sweden either, but some parties (left AND right) are pushing for it.
All tooth-related healthcare is free as long as you're 23 or younger though, but after that it gets expensive.

exscape ,

That won't help AFAIK. For example, your comment seems posted on lemmy.world, in a lemmy.world community, yet I can see it on Kbin. If you delete all your data on lemmy.world I can still see it on other instances, since every instance has received a copy.

As usual on the internet, treat everything you post as public and irrevocable.

It wasn't for a hike:

I am not going on a hiking trip or mailing myself anywhere.

But also:

Please stop asking because I am not telling anyone the reason.

Right, but if you have a small instance for personal use, only stuff from communities/magazines you have interacted with are sent, no? The complete traffic from those communities shouldn't be that hard to handle in my understanding. Unless you subscribe to 196 in which case good luck. ;)

(I just blocked them, my first block so far. Even though it doesn't show up in /sub it was too much on the "all" page.)

Is there a way to customize what Mags are listed in the "Top Bar"? (kbin.social)

The settings tab in the sidebar allows me to "show top bar" but when I do, aside from the standard-seeming "All", "Subscribed" etc, this top bar lists a bunch of seemingly random mags (NorthVancouver? Telugu?). Is there a way to customize what's up there? Or at least set it to list my subscribed mags? As-is it's a bunch of mags...

exscape ,

I don't think so, but you can get a customizable sidebar with subs with userscripts, for example like this:

https://kbin.social/m/kbinStyles/t/67961/Kbin-Subscriptions-Panel-1-4
https://kbin.social/m/kbinStyles/t/66759/Made-a-script-that-adds-a-floating-list-of-your

The screenshot is from the top script.

exscape ,

Why would anyone downvote for that reason though? That reason is why I upvoted. I'm firmly left-wing but absolutely not far enough that I can support their BS views.

exscape ,

Boosting is like retweeting so that basically has to be public. You're sharing the comment with your followers.

exscape ,

I'm pretty sure reddit said explicitly that everything marked NSFW will not be filtered out.

exscape ,

Yeah, that's fair. And they also said earlier this year that they won't change anything about the API in at least a few years.

"Antiwoke" magazin on kbin.social posting bullshit like "how to end Wokeness" and "Time to reject the extrem trans lobby harming our society" How to report ? he is the moderator of that magazin. (calckey.social)

@ernest how do I report a Magazin on kbin.social ? There is a usere called "ps" who is posting to his own "antiwoke" Magazin on kbin.social. Please remove this and dont give them a chance to etablish them self on kbin.social. When I report his stuff it will go to him because he is the moderator of the magazin? Seems like a...

the tu quoque is almost too tempting here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance

We can't be tolerant of people who are intolerant towards e.g. LGBT people; it doesn't work out in the end.

exscape ,

Please look up the facts. Doctors don't "cut off sex organs" or do ANY other physical changes to trans children.

exscape ,

AI bots don't 'hallucinate' they just make shit up as they go along mixed with some stuff that they found in google, and tell it in a confident manner so that it looks like they know what they are talking about.

The technical term for that is "hallucinate" though, like it or not.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallucination_(artificial_intelligence)

All programs should tell you where they store config files (utcc.utoronto.ca)

I wholeheartedly agree with this blog post. I believe someone on here yesterday was asking about config file locations and setting them manually. This is in the same vein. I can't tell you how many times a command line method for discovering the location of a config file would have saved me 30 minutes of googling.

exscape ,

Do things stay in that list when they are not used (since they would be opened and closed in far less than a second)? If so that's pretty cool.

If not, you can use Process Monitor to check this. That's what I usually do.
