I like that kbin and Lemmy aren't going to have an entire team of people doing continuous A/B testing to find what drives the most engagement.

Much less chance of this ending up as a dopamine slot machine.

Hi from Artemis 🫡

It's pretty great.

dandan ,
@dandan@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, something in the algorithm that prevents one magazine or one instance dominating would be the best approach.

To get even more pedantic...

It's defined on how far light will travel in a vacuum in the time it takes caesium-133 to do a certain number of transitions between hyperfine ground states.

It's cool how almost all units of measure are defined on caesium

It's the defacto term for how we fit a statistical model to data, unrelated to any copyright concepts. I'm pretty sure we called it "training" back in 1997 when I was doing neural networks at uni, and it's probably been used well before then too.

Neural nets are based on the concept of Hebbian learning (from the 1930s), because they are trying to mimic how a biological neural network learns.

This concept of training/learning has persisted because it's a good analogy of what we are trying to do with these statistical models, even if they aren't strictly neural networks.

Ahh ok. I didn't want to assume as I'm not familiar with the details.

I agree. Let's avoid the standard identity politics categories like gender, sexual orientation, race, blah, blah...

Can I add to your list:

  • TP fold vs. scrunch.
  • Both socks first, or one sock one shoe at a time.
  • Shirt buttoned from the top or bottom.
  • Innie or outie.

Is anyone else having trouble viewing any federated communities on kBin? I can't search for any federated communities and I'm kinda stumped.
I initially thought I had just clicked off on the 'Status' under the federation icon, but it's definitely on, tried toggling a few times to be sure.

I can't see any communities outside of kbin.social that I've tried so far.

Does anyone know of a way to see posts/comments made by people you follow?

dandan OP ,
@dandan@kbin.social avatar

@chris

I actually mean both posts and threads, and any other content the people I follow may create.

I'm wondering what is the point of following people on kbin.

dandan OP ,
@dandan@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, but I'm still confused. Where in kbin do I see what they post and boost?

Can I somehow follow hashtags on kbin?
I would love to see posts or articles with certain hashtags

dandan ,
@dandan@kbin.social avatar

@CrystalEYE not that I'm aware of. however you could create a magazine, and add all the hashtags you are interested in as tags. Then the microblog section of that magazine will be a collection of posts that contain those hashtags.

It's federating with Lemmy.world

Must be something particular with kbin

The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit (kbin.social)

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down....

dandan ,
@dandan@kbin.social avatar

I've been pressing the pressing the same spot on my phone for 13 years to access Reddit.

Just putting the kbin app there was all I needed to migrate.

Now that federation works, we need more clarity of source (kbin.social)

I'm seeing the federated content, but it's hard to tell where the content came from. Currently, the only reliable way to see the source is by reading the URL when you're viewing a thread. It doesn't work well on mobile though and it doesn't work for the feed....

I appreciate the point you are making, but here's a solid example of how it gets confusing.

ANNOUNCEMENT: defederating effective immediately from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works

Who is defederating?

Long and short term, which features would you like to see implemented? (kbin.social)

For me flair is probably the most important. I follow a lot of organized sports and being able to quickly identify which team someone supports helps the conversation move along without having to write "as a fan of..." in every single comment. And this isn't a like talking shit, sports guy thing. It's genuinely extremely useful...

I actually like this. I feel it encourages you to read the thread before posting something.
