I've been CTF'ing since Doom LAN parties, never seen it either.

Older folks like us tend to not say much or when we do, we keep it game related. We also tend to mute or ignore trolls from the start, so that's probably why lol.

Unless you are a native Hawaiian, you can only lease the land for 100 years. Further, the cost of living in HI is way way higher than SoCal because everything has to be imported.

Source: ex-Navy who lived there and used to crash open houses in diamond head for snacks when he was poor.

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

Had to go back and look it up. The answer is it just depends. Some land is owned by the State of HI, in which non natives can own it where other land is owned by the Natives through the Monarchy of HI and can only be leased:

As a yank who lived in the UK (East Sussex) for several years, I can share the sentiments of my mates there that they believe we Americans still speak a more traditional version of the language than they do now. Specifically pronunciation of words.

For example, Americans have retained the pronunciation of the final “r” in words like “father” and “mother,” while the UK has dropped it. Americans have maintained the “flat a” sound of cat in words like “path” and “class” whereas the UK has mostly replaced that sound with the “broad a” of “father.”

It's not an exact science, but the rate of change in the language there has gone beyond the 18th century version we Americans still speak today and thus, it can be said American English, at least pronunciation, is more traditional.

Newly Discovered Fossil from the Smithsonian’s Collection Named After Kermit the Frog ( www.smithsonianmag.com )

In a paper published today in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, museum paleontologist Arjan Mann and Calvin So, a doctoral researcher at George Washington University, describe a new species of proto-amphibian that they recently discovered in the museum’s fossil collection. They identified several unique features...

Actually he's not, he is using a loophole whereby the owners sign an official lease with him for him to reside there.

The other tenant(s) do not have a lease and therefore are not within the legal right to complain.

edit: He also doesn't do it directly for profit, thus bypassing other laws. His site explains it in a youtube video here: https://squatterhunters.com/about/

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

The website doesn't really explain anything though

The video does, but here's one that may explain it better:

https://www.the-sun.com/news/10824220/squatter-hunter-flash-shelton-evict-laws-business/

Why would the legal world take much longer and many more dollars to achieve what this guy can?

The court system here has a huge backlog, so it can literally take a year in MOST cases to get rid of them (if not longer like during Covid). An owner basically has to first call the cops who verify they are not a paying tenant, then weeks later file a petition with the city to have them removed within 90 days, then after 90 days, if they do not vacate, submit a court action to go to court. If they're a no show on the court date several months later, they will finally get forcibly removed a few weeks after the court date. All this because they, squatters have rights:

https://www.sapling.com/12143680/legally-rid-squatters-california

Why wouldn't everyone just sign a lease to their friend?

If you have friends willing to take the risk of getting injured or hurt in the process, sure, but I don't know anyone who would do that personally.

If the landlord is aware of the squatters and then enters into a lease intended to deprive them of possession, how is that not just an end run around the law?

As stated before, it's a loophole to the squatters rights linked above. Here is SoCal you either wait your turn for your day in court whilst they trash the place OR you do something like this. The law just hasn't caught up and thus why Squatter Hunter is lobbying for change.

That's a totally different flavour. It makes me wonder if there is a genetic reason like with the people that think cilantro tastes like soap.

More taste buds = more diverse taste and thus soap because Cilantro leaves share a chemical found in soap. It's also a genetic trait.

They should have a literal rating for Level 1, 2 or 3 charging when you buy it. MOST of these only handle level 2 charging at 80A. I highly doubt there's many if any that can do Level 3 and not cause magic smoke to appear, but I could be wrong as I haven't looked at them since I bought a SyncWire adapter for Level2 charging at Tesla stations.

No, electric vehicle sales aren’t dropping. Here’s what’s really going on ( www.cnn.com )

You’d be forgiven for thinking the American market for EVs is collapsing. But in the last quarter of 2023, EV sales were up 40% from the same quarter a year before, according to Cox Automotive. In fact, EV sales in the United States hit a record last year, topping 1 million for the first time....

Opera, Vivaldi and Brave are descent alternatives.

EDIT:

Vivaldi (based on Opera, but FOSS and not Chinese) is still good.

I didn't realize Brave inserted referral codes, TIL.

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

I only listed Opera because Vivaldi's based on it, but that's about where it ends. Vivaldi and FF are the only two I use tbh.

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

I only listed Opera b/c Vivaldi is based on it:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivaldi_(web_browser)

Vivaldi is absolutely a descent FOSS product, but will agree with the Opera sentiment and have edited my post more accordingly.

Sounds about right: Vizio the throw away brand. Horrible warranty terms, they refuse to repair them even if you offer to pay and completely unrepairable yourself.

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

As per iFixit and other sites like tvserviceparts, it depends on the Vizio model. Mainstream models you can often replace the screen and even power input board, others you simply cannot without sourcing their brand though.

Example repairable model: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/VIZIO+TV+Screen+Replacement/120241

Vizio makes it 100% impossible to acquire a replacement of: buttons, bezels, control boards and input boards for intellectual property rights reasons.

In short, unlike other brands, they make it far less easy to repair either by IP restriction or by over usage of glues.
