Republicans are attacking Swift/Swifties? I need to buy more popcorn!

A woman, who has only been able to vote for about a century, actively encouraging others to vote??! Blasphemy!

I wonder if they'll burn as many of the expensive NFL jerseys they paid for as they did when a black man had the gall to send a silent message about police brutality and inequality.

Yep, Brother rocks.

Too lazy for my usual lengthy monologue about Brother when this comes up, but works well with Linux, far more reasonable ink cost than any other brand I've tried, and the even low end 'inkvestment' model we have has really lived up to its claims regarding ink longevity. It doesn't even hassle you when you use off brand ink, but I only tried hat once since I had so little complaint about the Brother ink. You do lose ink level indication, which is annoying, but that's it, and manually checking level is also easy with this style of printer.

He was charged with harassment and sexual abuse after deputies reviewed security footage of the incident, which showed Hull “unwantedly touched the female victim in the groin area and pulled her hair unprovoked,” according to a press release announcing the arrest last year. The sexual abuse charge was later dropped.

A month later, police responded to a call regarding Towns’ two children, one of whom was upset over their father’s recent death at the hands of law enforcement. According to the reports, one of the colleagues allegedly put one of the son’s face near a cactus-like plant. Sixteen-minute body camera footage released by the department in June shows Crutchfield subtly shoving the officer, going back and forth with one of the people at the scene.

“Officer Taisyn Crutchfield fortunately followed state-wide police training and intervened to de-escalate the situation. Officer Crutchfield deserved a commendation for her swift and heroic action, avoiding needless violence,” a press release from Crutchfield’s attorney said, the outlet reported. “Instead, she was relieved of duty and punished. Our lawsuit is about righting the wrong that Officer Crutchfield has suffered from.”

I'd almost guarantee the original TOS had a line like "we can change the TOS at any time."

Having said that, I also thought I'd seen quite some time ago that burying undesirable restrictions in the fine print of a TOS doesn't help companies who fuck up as much as they hope it will in court because it's been acknowledged that so few people thoroughly read them.

IIRC they scare people into thinking they have signed away legal rights more than they actually have. I could be wrong, but that's my recollection.

Edit: Just a quick search - https://www.rocketlawyer.com/family-and-personal/personal-finance/consumer-protection/legal-guide/your-rights-if-a-business-changes-its-terms-of-service

Consumer protection laws

Federal law and many state laws protect consumers from a wide range of deceptive, fraudulent, or unfair business practices. As mentioned earlier, businesses can enforce their TOS even if their users did not read them in their entirety, but only if the terms are reasonable and fair. Hiding unusual terms deep in the fine print of the TOS could be considered deceptive.

Yes I very much respect the minority of conservatives who are loyal Americans instead of power mad neofascists trying to subvert our precious 245 year old democracy.

If there were more than 5 of these unicorns Trump wouldn't have done so well in 2020, and Republicans in congress wouldn't be the clown show that they are today because of the pressure they'd have been receiving from their constituents.

The current state of Repubican leadership convinces me that the only pressure they are getting from their consituents is to go harder with facism.

I hope she fractures the R vote also. But I'm not going to forget what conservative America has enabled and continues to support to this day.

Republicans Are Blurring the Faces of Capitol Rioters so They Won't Get Arrested (www.rollingstone.com)

House Speaker Mike Johnson has promised to release more than 44,000 hours of surveillance footage from Jan. 6 to the public, with one major caveat: The faces of some individuals who participated in the storming of the Capitol, a violent attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s election, will be blurred out....

That's a great point I hadn't even thought of that.

Speaker Johnson Explains Holdup In Releasing Jan 6 Tapes: ‘We Have To Blur Some Of The Faces’ To Protect Them From The DOJ (www.mediaite.com)

Yes. You read that right. Johnson is saying that he is intentionally hiding insurrectionists from prosecution in the release of tapes that Republicans claim will vindicate them on January 6th.

This is 100% a slave generating structure.

And if you’re upset about it, or don’t behave 100% correctly, you will be arrested and imprisoned.

100% exactly that, and I'm sorry do this, but not only one but two of your points are explicitly in the same song that's been at the top of my "most played" list lately. Snippets:

Nothing can save ya, you question the reign
You get rushed in and chained up
Fist raised but I must be insane
cos I can't figure a single goddamn way to change it

...

Only two generations away
from the world's most despicable slavery trade

Pioneered so many ways to degrade a human being
that it can't be changed to this day
Legacy so ingrained in the way that we think we no longer need chains
to be slaves

Personally I don't think banning associating with any group is a good thing. There lies neo-McCarthyism.

Not remotely the issue here. This isn't about banning, this is about not having or having nazi simps influencing a political party.

Really? Because the article spells out the problem in the second paragraph.

In a 32-29 vote, the party’s executive committee decided against excluding from their organization those “known to espouse or tolerate antisemitism, pro-Nazi sympathies or Holocaust denial”. A proposal to ban such individuals was included in a resolution supporting Israel as it wars with Hamas in Gaza.

Am I an antisemite because I think Israel is off the hook currently? Some people think so. Does it make me a Nazi, or as you say a "nazi simp"? I find that idea laughable, but maybe those same people think so. Maybe you do too. Or maybe someone in power a year from now will think so. I have no desire to participate in the Texas Republican party, nor any Republican party, but 100% any such resolution is going to open the door to weaponize those definitions, and the topic at hand is a current-day example.

And here's another article to back up my perception of measures such as these:

Republicans’ Dangerous New Bill Would Try to Muzzle All Criticism of Israel

And by the way - the downvote button isn't intended as a disagree button. If you think I'm wrong, show me how I am.

be_excellent_to_each_other , (edited )
@be_excellent_to_each_other@kbin.social avatar

You are simply desperate to pretend that the Republicans are correct to not exclude Fascists from running their party. They are not. Nazis should be excluded.

No Sir, I'm desperate to help you understand that if they want to exclude Fascists from running their party they should use language that only excludes Fascists from running their party, not broadly applied to whoever they don't want at that time.

You are so hung up on the fact that I used the word "ban" one time (as did the article) that it's all you can reply to.

As a side note, I see no evidence nationally that Republicans don't want fascists running their party, and Texas Republicans can start with Greg Abbot if they'd like to convince me otherwise.

Edit: I'll include this bit again since you clearly didn't read it the first time.

It's a really simple problem to avoid, and IMO has been for years. It's been at least 10 years since I've bought something without intel wifi so maybe I'm out of touch, but I'm kind of astounded there are so many upvotes to the meme.

My rule for a very long time has been: Get something with intel wifi, or even atheros wifi, and you will almost certainly not have a problem. Get broadcom wifi and your problem will directly relate to how much effort your distro has put into trying to make broadcom not be shit. Stay the fuck way from realtek and mediatek.

That's it. I literally can't recall a time since about 2010 when I had a wifi problem with Linux on any device I owned.

I keep two of these in my bag for instant wifi on any device I might happen to be working on that doesn't have it. Most recently popped one into an old desktop I picked up for my youngest son, and have used it previously as a workaround for someone who had a laptop where the onboard wifi worked but would not come back from sleep. (That was broadcom, IIRC)

McClain was catatonic and not speaking at that time, but law enforcement officers can be heard on body-worn cameras telling the medics that he was exhibiting “crazy” strength and that he nearly did a push-up with all three officers holding him down at one time.

It's amazing what feats the human body can perform when trying to save its own life. A shame these folks were so determined to kill him. Don't listen to the audio from the bodycam on this one or read a transcript unless you want to weep for the cruel loss of a gentle soul.

Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago (www.nytimes.com)

Been a few years since I did a Debian install, but IMO it's fairly daunting for a noob unless it's changed a lot. I found Arch easier to install (this is not me suggesting you use Arch, just making a comparison - I currently don't use Arch btw.)

I would disagree with the prior poster urging you to use Debian testing/unstable partially because saying it like that as they did implies they are the same, which they are not.

Suggest if you stick with Debian (which is a fine and foundational distro, I'm just not sure it's a good choice for a noob - but again haven't touched vanilla debian in years), you read this page first (and the page for each of the branches) to decide which release to use. https://wiki.debian.org/DebianReleases

And what would that even look like? Dragging a bunch of men who have voluntarily rolled back their entire worldview to 1940 (or worse) kicking and screaming into some semblance of modern rational thought? How does one do that, and why is it the job of women to do it?

I started using Plasma 5 a smidge before devs were saying it was ready for primetime. That was my conversion from Gnome (which I was very happy to leave by then) and it's been nothing but positive.

I will wait for the full release of Plasma 6, but I'm super excited for it. I still <3 Plasma 5.

Thank you KDE devs!

be_excellent_to_each_other ,
@be_excellent_to_each_other@kbin.social avatar

Nothing specific. When I first jumped from gnome I spent probably more than a year going "damn that was thoughtful" or "wow, that's super convenient" as I discovered different features. As I said, I was an earlyish adopter of Plasma 5, and it was enjoyable just to watch it take shape.

I like what the KDE team does, and I like seeing Plasma continue to get better, so I'm just looking forward to a fresh new release, and discovering all the little niceties.

And bringing back the compiz style cube is pretty nice too. 😁
