How can Canada have “no clear position” on genocide, in light of World Court ruling? - People's Voice (pvonline.ca)

ICJ decision holds that Israel’s siege on Gaza is “plausible” genocide By Dave McKee The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled today that Israel’s siege on Gaza is a “plausible” genocide and has ordered a series of emergency, provisional measures that Israel must take. Shamefully, the Canadian government’s...

Great thing about Mint (or most Linux distros) is that you can try it by booting from a usb stick - see if you like it that way.

Issues with the functioning of kbin.social (kbin.social)

The issues that started occurring on Sunday turned out to be more serious than anticipated, extending beyond the application code. We are still working on resolving them to ensure the proper functioning of the website, but we need some more time. Apologies for any inconvenience.

There is an option for this under settings which is likely to be more fruitful than a comment in a thread.

Prototype for new Kbin app: Interstellar (kbin.social)

I've been working for the past week on a new kbin app. At the moment, it's just a prototype and only the "Feed" view has content (you can't sign into an account or post anything yet); you can see threads, thread images, thread comments, thread links, and thread votes/boosts. You can also change the "Theme Mode" and "Instance...

Ernest will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he's also said he'd prefer to leave aps to those for whome it is a core strength.
I think he knows it's something the community would like, so I think the post you link above was in reaction to Artimis unfortunately going offline and the App (for now) dieing with it (since nobody seems able to contact the developer). I suspect it's something Ernest will progress 'in his free time' if no other apps which live up to his ambitions are developed first!

RTR#35 User profile enhancements: sorting options, new date range filter, reputation points fix (kbin.social)

Today, I made some updates to the user profile. I've introduced the capability to sort and filter content. Additionally, I've implemented a new feature allowing content filtering based on a specified date range, which is now operational across all views. While there isn't a dedicated button in the interface yet....

I think it is down to not qualifying as hot. If you sort by new after posting you'll likely be able to see them.

RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes (kbin.social)

Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

I think it complements federation too. Suddenly you can have a collection of magazines sharing a name/topic from different instances all listed together in one place. That's really quite cool!

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

how it should work on kbin.social [?]

In my view ideally upvotes and downvotes federate both ways, but I can also see why some admins might choose not to federate in downvotes.

I guess the real question comes down to what you do with the information.
I think currently the sort order is very heavily skewed towards boosts (which I actually quite like), but I do also sometimes wonder how it would look if the sort order was aligned with the reputation system (i.e. boost= two upvotes).
Having both sort options available might be nice, (noting that we'll not federate in any boosts from Lemmy).

If we did federate in downvotes the current sort order (which seems based on boosts less downvotes?) probably wouldn't make sense?

...I'm also be keen to see others thoughts on this!

Edit: formatting

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

A key difference here is we can see who downvoted which I think makes people more cautious to downvote. I guess Lemmy users aren't used to that however (but it might change their behaviour when they realise we can see!)

RTR#21 Sub channel filters, spoiler tag (kbin.social)

In addition to the sidebar, this option can also be changed in the user settings, which have also been slightly redesigned....

Hi @maegul, I just wanted to let you know. It's not perfect yet, but it's something I'll be working on in the coming months after the first release. Thanks for pointing it out, it's a relatively simple change, but it makes a significant difference in the overall experience.

Current gen AI is unsustainable and there will be fallout of the eventual disappointment

It seems most people are on board with the idea that AI will change the world. While I agree it having some impact, I also think it is overinflated by marketing. It's been two weeks since I started writing the devlog and the return to coding. I'm okay with the results. I've managed to establish the routines that were much needed. Hello from kbin... (federated here too)
But this poses an interesting dilemma for Google, potentially to top 100 results could end up just being the same post observed on many Lemmy and kbin instances.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Hello! It's great to see you are back in action! It sounds like you've had a bit of a bumpy ride of late, so here's hoping for better times ahead.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Congratulations, you have a reputation of 1,427 as observed on kbin.social!
Kbin / mbin do expose reputation (karma) even for federated users. e.g.
https://kbin.social/u/@GreyTechnician@lemm.ee

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Only it is more complicated than that too ...kbin has boosts as well as upvotes, and boosts count double, so reputation is:
Boosts x2 + upvotes - downvotes
and all of that is as observed by that instance, so much of your history could well be on communities the kbin instance doesn't know and didn't see.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

That happens to some extent due to federation. If lemmy.ee goes do down all the content which has been federated out (like this post) will continue to be visible, and can be interacted with, from any instance which was subscribed to the community etc.

E.g.
https://kbin.social/m/support@lemm.ee/t/583716/Is-there-anyway-for-the-backups-of-this-lemmy-instance

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

But they are taking about monitoring public facing social media - frankly I think it would be daft if they did not do this.
If a be teaching assistant starts publicly posting harmful harmful content there should indeed be systems on place to ensure this is identified and appropriate action taken.
If you post publicly you have to assume everybody, including your employer, might see it.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

From the comment I'm guessing Canada... but then India is commonwealth too so the logic doesn't really work.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

My read of this is mostly that airlines don't engage in price fixing and collusion - or more specifically their algorithms are designed so they don't (directly) create this outcome.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Look up hairy black holes. Hawking basically pointed out a paradox.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Posts and comments are federated (synchronised). Upvotes are actually a bit of a fudge, they are actually 'Favourites' if considered from an activity pub (e.g. Mastodon) perspective, and yes favourites are also federated.
Downvotes don't exist in activity pub and, as a result, they do not federate between instances.
At least that is my understanding.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

If you use kbin you can even see who has made each upvote, so yes easy to then look for patterns of voting together and also at the profiles to see if the accounts looks like real people etc.

    The kbin code does now have an API, kbin.social just isn't running the latest version of the code.
    On the rate of development and backlog of pull requests - it looks like kbin has just been forked (mbin) in an attempt to address this.

    kbin is lowkey kinda complicated lol

    there's so many different kinds of posts, microblogging, threads, etc.

    lowkey a bit overwhelming.

    Teppic ,
    @Teppic@kbin.social avatar

    @soweli There is certainly some truth to that, but

    1. it gets easeir farily quickly; and
    2. it's worth the effort! Other platforms don't give you the same power and breadth of access across the fediverse.

    You'll find you get more interaction from within kbin (and also from Lemmy) if you use 'Threads' rather than 'Posts' (like this). Posts sit in the Microblog and are more aligned to Mastodon way of working - they are harder to see unless people already follow you.

    Teppic ,
    @Teppic@kbin.social avatar

    And here I am amused to be reading all the Lemmy centric replies to a Lemmy specific meme ... but doing it from elsewhere on the Fediverse. Here on kbin we interact with Mastodon just like we do with Lemmy. It all looks like one wonderful integrated fediverse from here!
