The new Burning Man.

Hey Google, remember the very first "doodle" you had on your homepage that had the Burning Man? Please bring it back.

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I was literally about to mention him.

I wonder why nobody managed to broadcast his match against... I think it was Alex Clark (maybe I'm wrong). It would've been amazing to see what it was like especially for people who can't afford or don't wanna attend, such as myself. In fact, because of this, I don't even know who won.

I see it pretty much all the time. You probably live somewhere where people are more likely to do stuff other than chewing gum, or, in the worst case scenario, somewhere where it's literally illegal (ie Singapore).

On my client (Jerboa), all of these worked except for ^Superscript^Normal~Subscript~, honestly I don't know why it doesn't support this very specific formatting thing.

Texas: the new Yorkshire

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

It would've made sense if Yorkshire was a city, which, it isn't.

No, what I was actually meaning was that Yorkshire was one of the historical counties of England. However, when you look at the administrative/postal counties, there's actually 4 of them all called Yorkshire, one of them has an even longer name: "the East Riding of Yorkshire".

So basically, if Texas want to split itself up, it should, just for shits and giggles, adopt the Yorkshire strategy, hence, the new Yorkshire.

Try counting the amount of times I've said "Yorkshire" in this reply.

I think Tamago2474 made a video entirely about the evolution of CAPTCHAs. Yes, it even answers your question.

It's this one in particular.

So now we have more users than the entire population of the United Arab Emirates (according to worldometers.info), and we could potentially reach the population of Tajikistan soon enough.

I had no idea this was a My Little Pony thing (never was a massive fan of the franchise)

It's more of a light grey vs dark grey.

"Blacker than the blackest black" black?

I'd say that's more accurate.

Ramadan isn't that far away from now, maybe you should try that. Or don't, it's just a suggestion.

If the two are both part of ActivityPub, then I never understood why stuff from Mastodon doesn't appear on Lemmy, but the reverse is true.

Got it

Seriously, why is the USA supporting Israel?

The US is supporting Israel through what we can mostly all agree is a genocide of the Gazans. Clearly, Biden isn't a genocidal maniac, yet he's all in with unwavering support. Why are we doing this? There has to be a logical reason that isn't just "we want Israel to kill everyone in Gaza and take their land a la lebensraum."...

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

The US had no essential friends in the Middle East. So the UK made one for them.

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

You are no longer friends with Iran.

Saudi Arabia is probably the only one who you guys are still kinda friends with, but I think even they are starting to get tired of you.

You invaded Afghanistan. They now have a government that despises you.

Same with Iraq.

Pakistan is also friends with China, nay, especially with China.

Thanks, I spent about an hour thinking of a good enough joke for this.

Resol = bunch of jumbled letters that are completely meaningless, but can be interpreted as either the first 5 letters of "resolution", or the backwards spelling of "loser"

van = Dutch word meaning "of" or "from"

Lemmy = this is insanely obvious

It makes me seem like someone from Belgium/the Netherlands, but to be honest, this is not my legal name, nor am I from these countries (I would like to live in Belgium, though), I'm actually from... ugh, Morocco.

Some protests in the Arab Spring even caused civil wars, at least one of which is still ongoing to this day.

For the first few months on the platform, I noticed these trends that I would end up agreeing with later on:

  • Liking, or straight up adoring Linux

  • Disliking, or straight up despising cars

  • Everyone is left-wing and liberal

  • Israel stinks

  • Rainbows galore

  • Big companies are cringe

  • Independent media is based

  • Products made by big companies are known to be spyware

  • The Chromium "open-source" browser, as well as the engine that it uses, is basically the reason why Firefox is dying out

  • Right-wing politicians are bad

  • Piracy is basically fighting for freedom of information on the internet, especially when big companies tend to be so overprotective of their intellectual property in situations where they don't really need to

  • Free, open source software is basically the future

  • The European Union is basically where everyone on Lemmy lives in real life, and if not, it's where everyone wants to live (which is my case given that I'm from Morocco)

Other very notable points that I have when comparing Reddit with Lemmy are the following:

  • The community is very passionate yet very small, it kinda feels like Animal Crossing

  • Goddammit, having multiple instances federating with each other is such an amazing thing that literally nobody can wholly own the thing and make crappy decisions that end up ruining the whole thing at once (cough cough Twitter)

  • API is free, API is free, API is free

  • Being such an obscure platform, it has helped me tremendously with cutting down on social media usage due to how insanely addicting it can be at times, sometimes in the worst possible scenarios, like when you have an exam tomorrow

I'm pretty grateful that I made the decision to ditch Reddit for good. I really like this place, and I mean a lot. I wouldn't be called "Resol van Lemmy" if it weren't for Spez being such an ass.

Indie games and indie musicians.

Most of my friends have the mentality of "if it's not popular, it's not worth checking out, regardless if it's actually good or not". And I hate it.

That's the feeling of betrayal right there.

Apparently people have different opinions when it comes to desktop OSes I guess.

Yeah I'm very depressed.

Idk why, I just thought that it sounds cool for a surname. I even have a cartoon character in my imagination that has it.

I heard Cary Huang made some pretty interesting stuff with Processing, such as Evolv.io (I can't explain it well enough, so look it up, also the link will lead you to nothing), a tool that lets you mix the faces of multiple celebrities together, as well as a program that generates an entire city landscape from one image (an example of which was used in his Battle for Dream Island cartoon series).

However, all of which were made with an outdated version of Processing (1.x I believe) meaning they need that outdated version in order to run.

Because Instagram sucks, and Pixelfed isn't really that amazing of a social media service despite having some great photography to gawk at.

I'd also like an alternative to Vimeo since not that many design agencies post their cool stuff on YouTube or even PeerTube (and I'm basically addicted to television branding).

I hope it can get better sooner than later

What are your experiences with the Mandela Effect?

See title. For those who don’t know, the Mandela Effect is a phenomenon where a large group of people remember something differently than how it occurred. It’s named after Nelson Mandela because a significant number of people remembered him dying in prison in the 1980s, even though he actually passed away in 2013....

I guess I was imagining random weirdness.

I'd play the Nickelodeon theme song on repeat at 180 decibels for as long as the caller is on the line.

If they hang up, a voicemail will be sent to them that contains... you guessed it, the Nickelodeon theme song at 180 dB. It will be played only once in this case.

Truly what an ingenious way to fry your phone's earpiece/speaker in addition to your ears and those of everyone around you within at least a kilometer of distance, all by listening to a too loud overamplified distorted rendition of those 5 notes known to be associated with Nickelodeon. I'd go to jail for causing such a disaster (both for "ear terrorism" AND copyright infringement).

The archivist inside of me thinks it's a good idea to make this the control room of the beIN headquarters, because I know a television channel of theirs that has a hell of a lot of lost media. I think Al Jazeera slapped their name on this channel (but it's not related to journalism, I promise) back when they used to own it, and they made a lot of great shows (and had great branding), but there's very few archives of what they actually made.

So, in a way or another, I'd be the one responsible for leaking their assets.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeem_TV?wprov=sfla1 is what I mean by that television channel I'm talking about.
