I have a roku tv and it's kinda the reason I ended up buying a chromecast. Other than paid apps and plex it seems entirely useless for convenient piracy streaming. It also doesn't pull anything into the home menu, and sticks to app launching. Not really great.

Plex is nice but I haven't leaned into it entirely yet. I'm not sure it can end up replicating the streaming experience? But it's nice as a media server.

Otome-chan OP ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Ah, this is what my brother is doing I think. I used to be into kodi but it's so clunky. The plex+*arr stack seems cozy for delayed streaming (mark what to watch, watch it later) but does it end up working for streaming? I was also under the impression it's not that great if you lack usenet?

Does it do recommendations? Every time I've tried getting into kodi it was pretty clunky/slow/etc. Hence my desire to get my setup on home screen then launch directly into a stream. Kinda sounds like everyone just launches into an app first.

Otome-chan OP ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

They did, albeit indirectly. It seems the answer is "no one has done this" which means it's likely not possible with the software that's currently made lol.

Seems most people just go through plex/jellyfin/emby with their usenet *arr setup. Which is no doubt cozy, but it doesn't quite grant the experience I'm after lol. I think most people are just used to launching into a streaming app to see what's on there since that's how most paid streaming stuff works too for the most part. The google tv/amazon fire tv homescreen setup is fairly new and apparently unused by basically everyone lol.

I might have to look into just coding my own launcher to get the features I want lmao. seems like a huge endeavor though. Right now I just have my remote set to be able to instantly jump into my preferred streaming apps, and single/double press home to switch between stock launcher and projectivy. It's not great lol.

here's the extension repo that the mihon devs use. It's just a straight reupload of the original extensions list, and that's where the community is centered around at this point.

The original tachiyomi also used apk extensions, it's just that the original list was baked into the app.

I use bypass paywalls clean and never see a paywall. so... yes.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I haven't had any issues with medium personally. But I have pretty extensive blocking as a whole (ublock, adguard, ghostery, ddg, bypass paywalls clean, canvas blocker, etc)

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I'm paranoid.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I've been using bypass paywalls clean for a while now and it's fantastic. Can confirm I haven't seen any paywalls since installing it.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

it's more than a filterlist, also custom code (though the repo you shared has the userscripts that you can install).

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I'm pretty picky about voices of iconic characters, but the new guy doing Mario and Luigi is solid. He sounds just like them to me, so no problem.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Sonic is basically what got me invested in voice actor swaps lol. I literally can't stand some of the voice actor swaps in that series because they just sound so drastically different and wrong.

Voice issues happen a lot with anime too when it gets dubbed. Rarely will the dub be better, but there's some iconic dubs like the pokemon cast, or haruhi. With the yuki-chan spin-off series of haruhi, I was really concerned they'd get different VAs and it'd be ruined as a result, but fortunately they had brought back the entire original cast.

God, finally. Maybe playstation will get better now? They've been declining in quality for literally ages.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

playstation started declining with ps3 which released in 2006. PS4 released in 2013, a decade ago. PS4 wasn't worth buying. That's a decade of garbage from sony.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

They're right that retail prices of AAA games are too low to make a profit. Which is why they've turned to microtransactions and dlc. However, the price of such games is too high, which means the budgets and profit expectations are too high. With the quality of games coming out lately, even $60 is too high. I can't imagine spending $70 or even $80 on a game.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I pretty much exclusively buy AA at this point, with the rare AAA nintendo 1st party title that I'm happy to pay $60 for. Most AAA games though just aren't worth it. Some of those games coming out you couldn't pay me to play.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I buy games that release for $40 and $50. They don't have dlc. They don't have microtransactions. They don't have cash shops. They don't have battle passes. I just pay my $40/$50, get my physical copy, often with a bundled goodie like cards or keychains, and play and enjoy my 40hr game.

It's absolutely possible because the companies that release these titles are pumping out several per year. You just.... have to stop spec racing and obsessing over 200hr playtimes and top of the line graphics and actually focus on making a decent, mid-sized game, with realistic expectations.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

They should just get rid of the expectations of sales numbers like what current AAA get. If we want better games, less people will buy them, because a good game isn't for everyone.

Tinder Now Letting Rizzless Sad Sacks Pay $500/Month to Message People Without Even Matching (futurism.com)

If you get a message from someone you never matched with on Tinder, it’s not a glitch — it’s part of the app’s expensive new subscription plan that it teased earlier this year, which allows “power users” to send unsolicited messages to non-matches for the small fee of $499 per month....

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Every time I see something about tinder it's just worse and worse. why would I want to use it?

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

most cats will only pay for their share of the pet rent. if you can find a sugar kitty you're pretty lucky.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

My joke was about how some apartments charge you "pet rent" if you have a pet. Naturally, your cat needs to pay his own rent.

No offense to companies but I'm honestly sick of companies forcing 2fa. Every single one seems to have a different shitty way of doing it. Like why on earth do I need two different authenticator apps on my phone (authy&google authenticator)? Some do sms/phone number, but then yell at you and prevent you from doing 2fa if you have a "bad phone number". This happened on discord where I'm locked out of certain servers because I can't do phone verification, and I can't do it because discord doesn't like my phone number. Twitter was the same way for a long while (couldn't do 2fa/phone verification due to them not liking my number).

From the article it sounds like they're doing authenticator app or sms. I'm guessing sms won't work for me, so app it is. I decided to dig to see which authenticator app they use and they list: 1password, authy, lastpass, and microsoft.... no google?

Honestly, even email requirements for accounts is annoying because you know it just ends up spamming you. is the future where we're gonna have to have 30 different authenticator apps on our phone?

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

they want your phone number so they can track you.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I like the app setup rather than shoving everything into a browser. But I'm not a fan of this 2fa stuff. I get the point is security, but let me decide which app/method to use, and whether I want to use it at all. Otherwise it's just annoying.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

do all authenticators work for all services?

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

websites explicitly said to get one or the other so I did.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

there's quite a lot of services that want phone for verification/2fa/whatever. whenever I run into them I usually just refuse to use the service altogether.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

phone numbers are typically tied to your name/identity, and phone companies can locate you using their towers and such. Giving a company your phone number is identical to giving a company your full legal name and address.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

that's good to know. I'll just switch everything over to google authenticator then.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

what happens if you don't have a phone number? you're just prevented from having a bank account?

Greg Rutkowski Was Removed From Stable Diffusion, But AI Artists Brought Him Back - Decrypt (decrypt.co)

Greg Rutkowski, a digital artist known for his surreal style, opposes AI art but his name and style have been frequently used by AI art generators without his consent. In response, Stable Diffusion removed his work from their dataset in version 2.0. However, the community has now created a tool to emulate Rutkowski’s style...

Seizing/Claiming inactive magazines? (kbin.social)

So most of us "old timers" now have been on kbin for almost a month (or more), and kbin has been around for longer. And.... we've started to have an issue and I'm not sure if y'all have noticed: early on some people went around to claim some magazines either with the intent to pass it off later, or simply to squat and ideally...

Is there any indication for edited comments? (kbin.social)

I was looking at a comment I left earlier today (several hours earlier) and realized I made a typo, and went to edit it. I'm used to Reddit putting a little asterisk next to the comment's timestamp to indicate that it was edited, but I'm not seeing anything like this on Kbin. Is this something that's tracked somewhere for users...

/kbin logotype
Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Afaik kbin doesn't have any indication of such. The etiquette is to put a note when you edit your comment.

Reddit doesn't always put the edit/asterisk mark when someone edits. Rather, it gives a small time period (maybe 5 minutes) to "shadow" edit your comment, without any notification being made. This is to allow quick corrections/typos and the like, without getting marked as an edited comment. then later edits are marked by the system (even if you don't mention the edit).

Reddit's system, combined with a system I see often (on twitter and reddit) where you can see previous versions of the comment, I think are ideal. That way you can see that it's edited, what the previous version was, etc. but also still grant that typos happen without permanently marking something as edited.

Since kbin uses activitypub, I'm actually not sure how the edit feature works here on the fediverse. I know it's possible to edit, but how does syncing with that work?

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

On reddit you can't see the previous version of the comment, only that it's been edited. I had a typo/slip in my previous comment haha. I meant youtube. youtube+twitter allow you to see previous versions. Reddit only puts a note if it's edited after a few minutes of being posted (but not immediate edits)

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

lemmy users can see kbin magazines but kbin magazines are a bit less discoverable since lemmy in particular has tools to help with finding cross-instance communities. I don't really like lemmy so I didn't bother making my more niche groups lemmy-specific.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

this means a censored user is connecting through your extension to access the Internet!

what exactly is it doing? sounds like it turns your computer into a tor exit node? if so, that's super dangerous.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

ah. so it's using webrtc to function as a tor entry node. okay thank you. yes this is not something I'd want to install on my browser lol, but a lot safer than being an exit node.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I went ahead and downloaded/tried it. and... I'm not a fan. First, it's mobile only. No desktop/pc/web. Already a negative. Then it forces instagram accounts, doesn't have it's own. There's literally no search feature I could find, so you're stuck looking at whatever the default feed is, or I guess who you follow? But can't find people to follow unless you search their name directly.

There's no activitypub support currently I think.

all in all I don't like it.

Otome-chan ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

it launched today lol. but yeah. if there's search I couldn't figure it out. it only seemed to search users, not posts.

DM message length limits? (kbin.social)

I've been privately DMing some other kbin users for a while now and I've run into a recurring issue: once the conversations and responses get lengthy, there's a hard length cap in terms of character count. Namely 5000 characters. Some of our messages end up around 20k characters in length, trying to quote and address each part...

/kbin logotype
Otome-chan OP ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

One person I'm speaking with I just gave them my discord info lol. email is, no offense, kinda terrible. there's no markdown support at all which makes the usual conversation style kinda difficult (block quoting a part of the message, and replying to it).

I also check email far less frequently than I check kbin lol.

Otome-chan OP ,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I don't actually ever remember hitting a DM length limit on reddit. I do know that reddit had thread/comment length limits which I hit all the damn time haha. But I don't recall ever hitting it in dms.

As for the > convention... sure. I don't doubt that maybe some older email clients worked like that. but modern day you can't really write in markdown style. and I can't seem to figure out how to get gmail doing block quotes lol.

but yeah I'm not really an email person. I prefer reddit-style markdown forums for asynchronous discussions, and live instant message like discord for live chats. email does neither of those, but it's just used because it's ubiquitous unfortunately. email is.... actually really bad. every thing requires it to signup, and then just spams your inbox. no one actually uses it to discuss/chat (and it's honestly terrible for that). so it ends up just being the way you verify your account after signup which is a dumb system. for password recovery I guess it works. it's also nice to get purchase confirmations in email. but other than that it's ehh.

tbh web as a whole really needs a rethink.
