How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

I second this, OP, this is pretty much the state of it, but I do recommend trying out a Linux program called Wine, it can run some windows programs in your Linux environment. It’s not always the best, but I run a circuit making program there and I only had a bit of issue once. I just wanted to mention wine since some stuff works well with it, but now I’m realizing a VM might be better if it’s multiple programs lol. Oh well.

I can agree with that

Piracy is Preservation (feddit.de)

Image description: a screenshot from the Wikipedia page for the Doctor Who TV series, with a user-added caption that reads “Preserve the media you can before it’s gone forever.” The Wikipedia article reads, “No 1960s episodes exist on their original videotapes (all surviving prints being film transfers), though some were...

I’m still very new to torrenting, is i2p the name of a website or does it mean something like p2p?

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Thanks for adding the link.

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Oh wow. I’ve never even heard of that show. I chose Doctor Who for my post because of it’s cultural influence and because I love the show, but it’s just crazy to think how much more lesser known media gets lost the same way

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Oh true, I didn’t even think about preservation of different versions of episodes

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Wow that’s dedication.

JetpackJackson OP ,

Yes I agree, we definitely need archival of many more parts of the Internet. It’s a lot harder for people now to access stuff that is no longer “popular” (I’m referring to streaming services here) and since so many shows are on so many different services that are raising costs it’s easier for stuff to get lost

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Huh interesting. I guess I’ll have to start looking into it more, thanks

JetpackJackson OP ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

That’s another good post, thanks for sharing

Thank you for the links! I guess I know what I’m doing this weekend lol

Oh true.

Thanks to dust I deleted a 70 gig file on my drive

Dust is a rewrite of du (in rust obviously) that visualizes your directory tree and what percentage each file takes up. But it only prints as many files fit in your terminal height, so you see only the largest files. It’s been a better experience that du, which isn’t always easy to navigate to find big files (or atleast...

JetpackJackson ,

I use gdu and never had any issues like that with it

What’s the difference between using chezmoi vs a regular git repo? I’m trying to figure out how these dotfile managers work

JetpackJackson ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Alright, thank you.

I only use like three playlists so I wrote a script to make .m3u playlists with those artists but it’s not perfect cause it pulls the data from the file path and not the metadata

I am now realizing this isn’t very helpful but I copy only a bit of music from my hard drive to my phone cause limited space so the scripts keep the playlists the same mostly

Edit: I just realized this asked about syncing. Oops. I guess I sync by copying music to my phone and then pointing the scripts to read the music folder there instead of the hard drive but I realize now that might not be what you want

Random thought: Windows is largely successful because of Piracy

Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....

I’m currently using Kvaesitso. It’s different, but it’s worth a try There’s also discreet launcher

Oh I think I tried that at some point. I see your point, it is closest to nova rn

How I messed up by accidentally replaying all my keystrokes from the last few days (github.com)

After getting a comment from the creator of kanata (an awesome piece of software by the way) that he found my story amusing, I figured that I’d also post it here, partly as fun, partly as a cautionary tale. Also, I’d appreciate any tips as to what to check for in my system, it’s a weird feeling to know that some stuff...

Oof I would be so panicked if that happened to me

Looking for fediverse platform for a minimal corporate website.

Some friends have websites. I encourage them to do. But they have them only to publish contact info, opening times, and a couple of photos of their business. What would be the best fediverse platform for this? Of course being able to post/toot news every now and then, is also a good feature.

Wait what’s fediverse discord

Oh wow that’s definitely weird lol (It’s the next day for me so now that’s the weirdest thing I’ve seen today lol!) Also nice with the Codeberg repo, I’ve been trying to switch my repos over to it cause it seems nicer than GitHub

How does this compare to the Fairphone 5 and their promise of updates and parts? Trying to figure out what’s best for my money

JetpackJackson ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Dang that sucks. I’m already having battery issues with my S21 so I was hoping the Fairphone would be better

Me staring aggressively at Steam, Zotero, and bash:

(And more)

JetpackJackson ,
@JetpackJackson@feddit.de avatar

Ah true. Bash doesn’t bug me as much as Zotero cause at least it’s a .bashrc file. With Zotero it’s a whole folder! In $HOME! Absolute madness!
