Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

More global presence. Too US centric to my likings.

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

On Kbin, browsing through the all tab, great majority of posts are related to US or some topic in the US.

Another good reason not to use reddit: Scalpers.

A bit ago I posted on reddit about how gameboys (handheld console) were getting more expensive and Scalpers were making it worse. For a bit the post maintained in the double digits with the occasional scalper downvoting. I went to bed and the next morning- Boom. I had been spam downvoted by people who's main activity is on...

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

That is something that can happen here too, eventually. Not by scalpers, but still.

I was about to left Lemmy/Kbin for good when some stupid fascists from Lemmy(grad).ml called me names and harassed me, despite the fact that I'm neurodivergent (like that would stop them from doing such actions, but anyway). And then I started blocking every community and user from those places, as well as any community/magazine about US politics or about any US topic because I don't give a damn heck about that place. And my experience improved really well.

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

Oh, do you want my viewing experience to be worse? Well don't worry, because I'm doing my best so PeerTube has quality content in a weekly basis, while you also have the same content in a monthly basis.

I'm doing my part.

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

I upload there daily since 5 days ago. And before that, the last time I uploaded something there, as well as on youtube, was 3 months ago.

Ignacio ,

It has content in Spanish or related to Spain somehow, but here it is.

Mbin is born - Fork of kbin!!

In the past months development of Kbin slowly came to a halt, development was bottlenecked by a single maintainer. I have tried several times to start a discussion about the way of working and trying to address the problems and to come up with a plan to keep development doing and more importantly keep contributors happy!...

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

Good news. Although I'm satisfied so far with Kbin, it's true that development was slowed, or stopped. It's still too soon, but maybe I'll consider to migrate over there. I'm too lazy.

The federal government sets the bare minimum protections for people in United States, not in other countries of the world. And internet covers the entire world, not only United States. That's how I see it.

Just wanted a warning, Lemmy.World is perhaps worse than reddit at respecting their users ( web.archive.org )

I just suddenly found my user over there banned. Not for getting in a fight or breaking any rules, but just for criticizing and asking questions regarding its recent vague Terms of Service. In fact, no reason, warning, or reply was given beforehand, and the admin who did it suddenly scaled to banned, with no reply or anything...

Ignacio ,
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

I had suspicions about lemmy.world since it started to become a big player inside of lemmy. Now those suspicions became real. That, and the fact that an instance with the domain .world is more US than world. Thanks for the info.

If all people thought like you do, then the fediverse wouldn't exist at all. No mastodon, no peertube, no pixelfed, nothing. Because it seems easier to complain instead of to collaborate in its growth.

    Too many fascists harassing, bullying and arguing in bad faith have this effect too.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Well, that's very easy to fix. Just hide the playstation beep with another random louder noise. Then profit.

    • Can you explain this gap in your resume?
    • Yes. I can.
    • ...
    • ...
    • So?
    • So what?
    • Why don't you explain it?
    • Because you didn't asked me to explain it, you asked me if I could explain it.

    Person with ASD, more likely.

    The auto-mod even could remove your 1000 paragraphs essay because it included just one specific forbidden word in a single line in a single paragraph.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    That's exactly what happens to me when I tell them America is a continent. Like, WTF?

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Whether it's one continent or two, the point is that it's bigger than the United States. At least I've always studied that Americans are people who live in America, either from Canada, United States, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina... Then you can divide them between North Americans and South Americans.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    But English, being a de facto universal language, has good creativity to invent new words, either from native speakers or from foreign influences. For example, the word "D'oh" didn't exist until Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta) popularized it. And I think the word "meme" didn't exist either 40 or 50 years ago.

    I think a good way to know that is to read newspapers from 100 years ago or older, and see how people from US were called.

    I miss the Reichtangle.

    There is a polandball community on Lemmy, but it doesn't seem very active :(

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Need a politics-free safe space? It’s called “going for a walk”

    Unfortunately, walks don't last forever. Another option is to delete your lemmy/kbin account, because everything in these places is politics or related to politics or turned into politics.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    There are already, like antiquememeroadshow, adhdmemes and my_mouldy_memes. But the most generic meme communities, or the flagship meme communities if you prefer it that way, are infected.

    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Yes. After some self thinking about this topic, I realized that my concern is not about politics in general. My concern is about US politics and its big polarization, and about that fight between capitalism and communism. I wouldn't mind politics focused on other countries or Europe, and without that polarization.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    It's not polarizing when I don't see tankies polarizing it :P

    On Kbin, I don't see much European politics, unfortunately.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    I don't see the Russian flag anywhere to talk about a far-right regime. Do you?

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Do you know that it's a really bad thing calling names to a neurodivergent person (ADHD/ASD)?

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Besides, I don't think those are good manners to address a neurodivergent person (ADHD/ASD).

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    How can we make it more popular?

    Defederating tankies, nazis, fascists, bigots and other awful elements; forcing moderators and administrators to do their job when bad behaviours occur, and respectfully disagree with other people instead of calling them names or mocking them.

    Ignacio , (edited )
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    Specially politics. Even meme communities are becoming a politics cesspool, at least that meme community of lemmy.ml, or 196 of lemmy.blahaj.zone (in a lesser way, but still), or gaming communities. Damn, do I have to block every single community of every single instance to really enjoy lemmy/kbin without being bombarded 24 hours with politics? And the funny/sad thing is that moderators and administrators don't even care.

    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    I agree that bots shouldn't spam content, but help people on command, like the TL;DR bot. But why was Reddit garbage? Was it for its bots, or was it for its toxic environment? Because, in my own opinion and experience, bots weren't a big deal over there. Instead, who was the brave enough person able to comment and face all kind of shit just because his/her comment?

    Don't ignore the whole garbage hiding under the carpet half of it and expose the other half to the people claiming "I don't want this filth."

    The vast majority of Americans do know Spanish. The only people who don't are Canadians, USians, maybe Brazilians, Jamaicans, etc.

    Change is coming. Humanity is entering a turbulent new era, unprecedented in both Earth and Human history. "As he was leaving his shattered dream back with tears on his face, she was staring at the window, with a glance as cold as a glacier, thinking about the okness of his meme."

    New idea I'm gonna try out ( kbin.social )

    One thing I really liked reddit for was reading news and talking about it. I have stopped posting or commenting there now and am in the process of slowly wiping my posting history... but I still browse it for current events a decent bit as it's just a lot more active than over here....

    /kbin logotype
    Ignacio ,
    @Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

    I like that idea too. It's a good way to start changing your mindset, so you enrich Kbin/Lemmy with content and with more engagement ways for us.

    Although I'm a bit concerned about this. If you're talking about links to some news, that's really good. No one will judge anybody for copying a link posted on Reddit to here. If you're talking about memes, it depends. It wouldn't be the first time I see a meme with some Reddit watermark, but let's not do this something regular. And if you're talking about text posts, then I'm against that. Otherwise, we'll become a human chatGPT.

    Either way, I'm positive. Let's populate this place, so more people can stay here in the long run.
