If you forget both, you upgraded the drive to a paperweight.

That's why I have a password manager on my phone.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Macs had TPMs before Windows PCs, IIRC.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

it’s podman-compose instead of podman compose

Don't use it, it's not a full replacement. The script is barely maintained and not really "official".

I think before switching from Docker to Podman you should first get proficient in Docker, because Podman is not for beginners (yet).

Helix ,

It's a dip, not a drop. Maybe you want to mitigate the sensationalist headline.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Generally, "dip" carries the connotation that there will be a rebound, or a return to the original position. A "drop" however would mean that this would hurt the company in the long run.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Basically, stock markets are based on predictions. If it is likely a stock will continue to fall, it is called a drop. You can not know if it's a dip or a drop in advance because rising and falling stocks are always relative to the rest of the environment. So calling it a drop would be not wrong, but an unlikely prediction.

Faster backup solution?

I use Beyond Compare to sync files from my laptop to my NAS which is a QNAP (my laptop is Linux Mint). It is incredibly slow, to the point that it is driving me crazy. Admittedly, I have lots of large files on my laptop that I move around frequently, so that may just be how it is. I do have my laptop setup to sync to my phone...

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

You should be able to run syncthing in docker on qnap. Which model and software version is it?

Keep in mind that sync is not a backup, neither is RAID.

@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Installing Docker on a QNAP device is straightforward, thanks to the integrated Container Station application. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Install Container Station: Log in to your QNAP device's web interface (QTS), and open the App Center. Search for "Container Station" and install it.

  2. Enable SSH: If you need SSH access, go to the Control Panel > Telnet / SSH, and enable the "Allow SSH connection" option. Click "Apply" to save the changes.

  3. Create a Docker Container: Once Container Station is installed, you can create Docker containers using the Container Station user interface. Go to 'Containers', click 'Create', and select an image from the available registries.

  4. Configure Network Settings: Container Station supports multiple network modes and VLAN for flexible deployment. You can manage these settings according to your need.

  5. Manage Containers: After creating your Docker containers, you can manage them through the Container Station interface, where you can start, stop, and configure your containers as needed.

For detailed instructions and the latest updates, refer to the official QNAP Container Station guide. It provides comprehensive information on using Container Station, including creating, managing, and deploying Docker containers.

If you do multiple passes you can alleviate some of the downsides of low bitrates. You can always easily spot it in dark areas. I despise watching space movies or shows on streaming services because of the resulting excessive banding artifacts.

Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I'm curious, how many people are aware of these sounds. I have designed, etched, and built my own switching power supplies along with winding my own transformers. I am aware of the source of the noise. So, does anyone else hear these high frequency sounds regularly?

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Since I got older this got better. One benefit I guess?

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

I really really liked Limewire and Shareaza. That coupled with collection search would be awesome.

Helix ,

Notifications turned off for almost everything, always.

Best QoL feature IMHO. My husband and bestie can get through with calls, everyone else gets called back.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

You can use ungoogled Chromium within firejail to have better performance than a VM.

It’s not clear how they’re making enough money to stay afloat.

Yes it is. It is basically marketing for their embedded products which they sell as whitelabel apps for makers of cars, satnavs and other GIS applications.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

It's a bit annoying to see every miniscule release here. People who want to subscribe to that can actually subscribe on Github and otherwise I'd be fine if these kinds of announcement posts are posted when there are big changes to not clutter the community.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

I would, if the game wouldn't be so expensive 💀

Helix ,

Now check the other mini PCs from other random Aliexpress, Banggood, Gearbest and Temu vendors...

Would have been my suggestion as well.

I survived a drug induced coma and since then my brain just misses a lot of cells. I once had a pretty high IQ and nowadays I can be happy I remembered to take my pills in the morning. The most I can do is a low level sysadmin job, for everything else I basically lack the brains.

It's not really something I have experienced in a past tense, I experience this shit every single day. Hate to be ridiculed for my bad memory especially. My coworkers don't know that and regularly make fun of me.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

Aww yeah, kidney stones suck. I'm glad I could mitigate them by becoming vegetarian and consuming less salt. Doesn't work for everyone though. Which kind of stones did you have?

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

I don't only feel less intelligent, I am less intelligent. My IQ dropped about 20%, which is noticeable by everyone including me.

The most annoying thing is that it feels like my brain is underclocked. Some Ritalin helped for a while with that but I had to stop taking it because of the risk for sudden death in conjunction with my other meds and conditions, which is something I wouldn't like to experience.

However even with enhancing drugs I still am not the 80% which my IQ test says, I feel more like half of what I used to be. It's really detrimental to self worth knowing that I used to be smart and now I'm "just average" even though years of therapy told me it's OK to be average.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

It’s like an athlete getting lame.

Oh wow, that's a pretty cool analogy. Stealing that :D

Others might not be able to understand this loss as they see them just being on their level

They even sometimes tell me how smart I am and that… triggers me even more. Bitch, I'm dumb, if you think that's smart you really offend me. Deep down I know that they mean well and think they're giving me a compliment, but it still stings.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

I would make Debian and Arch be deterministic like NixOS, but with a different language and less overhead. I really like the principle but the implementation is subpar.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

If it wasn't written in bash... 😢

Helix , (edited )
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

yeah, they're really in the wrong to think that we'd have some technical advancement within the last 40 years and we should expect more than a probabilistic text generator. 🙃

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

if you listen to marketing of companies using Machine Learning, AI can do everything right now.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

an analog computer that the guy gave feedback to images on. If it’s a circle or a square, if it guesses right or wrong

That reminds me of the Square Hole Meme.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

I know how ML works, my comment was a persiflage on over-simplifying the topic of AI and logic. I originally marked it with an /s to indicate sarcasm, but I think this gets lost with newer generations, so now I replaced the /s with the upside down emoji (🙃) which also seems to indicate sarcasm.

Dissapointed in Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

Here is the story: I decided to buy a good and expensive controller for my PC for the first time, after 3 decades of using stock dualshocks and cheap knock-off brands. Googled "best controller for PC", found a lot about elite series 2 controllers. Got excited about it (primarily the back-grip buttons and adjustable stick...

Helix ,

8bitdo controllers are good. They care about making good input devices.

I'd love to have a vscodium alternative written in a faster and more efficient language. Most editors and IDEs don't quite fit my workflow, while vscodium does.

Helix ,
@Helix@feddit.de avatar

In this case probably Vulkan, as developers tend to use current computers which support Vulkan, which is faster and younger and has less overhead.

In other cases you probably want OpenGL because older GPUs don't support Vulkan and usually you want to include as many users as possible.

Gogs

You know it has been forked to Gitea and Gitea has been forked to Forgejo in the meantime?

The client itself isn't, but their server implementation is and you could do the same with Element.
