I've been on the internet since '98, I've had worse in mine so here ya go rofl (mind the wikipedia notations, I wanna inform but I'm also lazy):

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (Russian: Протоколы сионских мудрецов), or The Protocols of the Meetings of the Learned Elders of Zion (Протоколы собраний ученых сионских мудрецов), is a fabricated text purporting to detail a Jewish plot for global domination. Largely plagiarized from several earlier sources, it was first published in Imperial Russia in 1903, translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. It played a key part in popularizing belief in an international Jewish conspiracy.

Beginning in 1933, distillations of the work were assigned by some German teachers, as if they were factual, to be read by German schoolchildren throughout Nazi Germany,[1] although the text had been exposed as fraudulent by the British newspaper The Times in 1921 and by the German newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung in 1924. Today, it remains widely available in numerous languages, in print and on the Internet, and continues to be presented by antisemitic groups as a genuine document. It has been described as "probably the most influential work of antisemitism ever written" since it emerged from Russia shortly before World War I.[2]

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

"Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

Not in the slightest. Even with the last decade of 'pfft, why pirate when we have Spotify?!1' dialogues, music piracy never slowed down for a moment.

Because:

A) New Pipe is a phone app only.
B) People view YouTube on devices other than phones.
C) People view more websites than just YouTube, on which they also want to block ads.

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.

I did a search from shitjustworks for "reddit die" and did not find https://lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made https://sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a "ping" sent out to notify all other federated instances....

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

You can, it's called hosting your own instance. It's literally one of the points of the Fediverse (i.e. 'Fuck you I don't like how you're running things, I'll go make my own with blackjack and hookers'). If an instance admin does things you don't like, you get to leave, go to a new instance, and follow the same communities you did before via that one instead.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

I know right? Magical!

GeekFTW , (edited )
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Any community that isn't 100% fully owned and operated by you, yourself, Mango, is going to run into the risk of a mod 'censoring' or deleting something that you wanna see.

Any and every community. Here, Reddit, Facebook, any social media, any forum public or private. If you yourself don't own and run it in its entirely, that's a problem you cannot avoid.

So I mean this without any real intended offense but: shit or get off the pot. Run your own community that connects to no other system or service run by other people and hope the people you wanna talk to drop by, or tbh get used to it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Can revenge-downvote me all you want Pepsi but I'm right on this one lol.

Is all wrestling , boxing matches really fake ?

I mean i understand some matches may be fixed but when two popular players fight would any of them want to be the loser ? And the damage looks very real or is the only fixed thing the outcome ? Maybe someone from the industrty can answer . Or am i missing something if so put it into the comments and i'll edit the post.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Or the 3 or 4 times New Jack tried to straight up kill someone during a match.

I.E. A Tuesday.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Asked and answered but to chime in also: Boxing is not fixed (outside of incidents involving crooked people of course).

Pro Wrestling is choreographed performances. The results of matches are predetermined by the booker. The wrestlers come together before hand, decide between them some 'spots' they wanna do during the match but otherwise go out there and 'call a match' live (giving each other verbal cues to do certain things/do certain things to them which the audience doesn't/can't hear [hopefully, looking at you Cena lol]).

The moves are done in specific ways to minimize actual damage, and wrestlers are trained to land, and take moves in specific ways to minimize actual damage.

A good source is the Santino Bros Wrestling Academy out in Cali. They have a playlist on their YouTube channel showing the basics of almost any wrestling move you'd wanna know and learn. Watch some of em and you can see the tricks.

Cena's infamous for being (comparably) quite loud in the ring when calling things. Always manages to get picked up by the mic's.

Honestly the only thing HP has ever made that I haven't been horribly, horribly disappointed with is their monitors. Just through circumstance of 'whatever-the-fuck-was-cheapest-but-not-total-ass-when-I-went-to-buy-them' I've ended up with 4 different HP monitors over the years, including a 20ish year old 4:3 one which still goes strong to this day.

Every other product was pure unadulterated ass.

Well, Google, ya gone and done it.

I just uninstalled Chrome, and installed Firefox. The last two days, YouTube turned to shit on me - won't load videos, is clearly heavily throttled. I switch to Firefox - YouTube works perfectly.

If you've been putting off abandoning Chrome, it's a LOT easier than I expected. Firefox imported my history, my logins/passwords, bookmarks, and so on. Completely painless. Chrome has become thoroughly enshittified. Leave it behind.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

@oldladyplays Welcome to the club. I only kept Chrome around for so long cause I was dependent on it for 3 Chromecasts which I'm not replacing any year soon, but Firefox-extension-creators managed to get things accessible enough that I was finally able to dump it 4-5 months ago for Firefox.

can a magazine be permanently deleted? i don't want to attempt to mod when post deletion/moderation is not federated (kbin.social)

i don't want spam or posts against the rules to be showing up on other sites like lemmy because the deletion on kbin isn't federated, it feels irresponsible to me and will make the community look bad. can i delete a magazine?

/kbin logotype
GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Magazines can be deleted. There is a Delete Magazine button in the Magazine Panel of any magazine you own (on the General tab, first one).

However at this time it does not appear to be an automatic thing (I believe Ernest has to clear then manually). I've deleted around a dozen so far (which were taken care of within 24h) and have had over a dozen more as well waiting for deletion (which have been sitting there for a month+ as Ernest has been busy as of late, and then the holidays and such).

@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

It's Canada's version of The Onion.

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

I find it funny any time I check Reddit and see the people complaining in the comments. 'Whats going on with Reddit lately?', 'Why are there so many bots and so much spam as of late?'.

Memories of gerbils I swear, we fuckin' told you this was gonna happen. How are these simpletons surprised?! (I know I answered my own question there lol).

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Fair!

GeekFTW ,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Honestly if you see kbin magazines that are just empty and unused (as you said, lots of people have made placeholder magazines during the Redditpocalypse and then it took time to see if people would stick around, or settle on a specific magazine)), check if the owner is awol for more than a month and if so, claim the magazine and set it to delete. Ernest goes in and will clear them out (tho he's a bit behind I assume due to all the work he's doing right now on the software) but it will help with getting the unused ones cleared out. I got well over a dozen of em scheduled to be deleted myself, as well as 10 or so others already deleted.

RTR#43 Break time (kbin.social)

I just got back from a over five-hour walk with my dog. I had promised him that for a long time, and both of us really needed it ;-) Now, a quick lunch, and I still have an evening workout ahead of me. Today, I decided to take a break from coding, although I probably won't resist doing something, and at night I'll probably tweak...

Also having the same thing happen over on /m/SquaredCircle for what it's worth. Just noticed last night after a particularly slow day. Logged into my lemmy.zip alt and noticed nothing for near 48h had come across from kbin. Checked another alt on another lemmy instance and it was more or less the same there too.

Having never heard of this nor read the article, I assume it was the 2020's equivalent of the old AIM chatbots that were amusing to talk to for 11 seconds before realizing you had better shit to do.

To those genuinely interested in moderating (kbin.social)

@Ernest has pushed an update which allows users to request ownership/moderation of abandoned magazines. Ghost/abandoned magazines were fairly prevalent after the initial wave of hype due to users either squatting magazine names or becoming inactive for other reasons. Now is your chance to get involved, if you were waiting to do...

If you didn't get an answer elsewhere yet: You click the button and it sits pending until approved (whether its Ernest approving manually or an automated batchjob I don't know). Seems to be once a day or so, so could be either but that's just anecdotal. That's it tho. Click the button and wait, no other steps lol.

Either way, once approved the magazine will just appear in your moderated list on your profile (no notification or anything from what I've seen) and from there it's yours to do with as you want. I've claimed a dozen or so over the last day or so to delete (unused ones people sat on).

    This was basically my situation, and it happened at age 4 so ironically some of my first memories are relating to my own circumcision 🙃. I also remember the doctor, with me laying on the table, trying to pull back my foreskin (again..4..) and making the call that I should be circumcised.

    I'm not gonna gripe much about it after the fact. My mother did much, much worse things to me than have me circumcised for me to complain about so it's just one more thing on the pile. I have zero frame of reference to feeling what being uncircumcised is like so I can't really miss what I don't know, but my cock works as well as I want and need it to (fuck even more than I want it to some days at 40yo..) so while I'm not happy it occurred without my consent, there's little I can do with it and it has thankfully never affected my life in any negative way.

    My wife and I are both in agreement however that should we ever have kids, we sure aren't doing it outside of actual medical needs.

    I’d really like an algorithm (optional, of course). Getting content you want to see is really difficult. It’s hard to find people to follow, and when you do you get all of their posts in your feed, not just the ones you want to see.

    Make sure you are following hashtags if you aren't. Follow people to get everything they post. Follow hashtags and you'll just get interest based posts (since pretty much everyone hashtags the shit out of their posts for visibility).
