They birthed and normalized shitty internet behavior: rickrolling on the lighter end, trolling, doxxing, and swatting.

They would also do shit like make fun of mentally handicapped people, which would lead goons to harassing the victims IRL and teaching kids that this was all OK.

And they would go after people who talked shit about about them, criticized them, or otherwise attacked them. The 4chan army would come out in force and try to ruin people's online existence.

Before Q-Anon showed up, they had started calling Trump God Emperor during the election. I think they may just have chose him as the candidate who would cause the most chaos, but it's easy to see how others others would take their goals more seriously and want Trump as president.

And the cycles of shitty behavior over decades attracted more and more rightwingers. I used to think of them as a chaos collective, but the politics swung hard right.

And then they spread to other platforms with r/the_donald, pepe the frog, and calling each other pedes.

I had an account with almost a million karma. Like 970,000.

I received two platinum boosts, and I'm not sure how many times I was gilded. Maybe 30 or 40 times?

Half of $5=$2.50 x 40=$100

Considering the time it took to do, it ain't shit.

My dude, you are extremely passionate about this topic. Also, as a mod, you are content arbiter of your sub. Chasing people onto other subs and then claiming they're harassing you is where this fails. It works conversely as well. Many a sub has been started by disgruntled members who left another sub.

Getting someone in trouble for lying on a social media app is going to be harder than you think. News sources get approached by all kinds of people claiming to have news. That avenue is not going to work.

I am not a lawyer, but you should seek out a lawyer to determine if you have a legal leg to stand on here. Does this guy have a lot of money? If so, he may come after you if he has a legal leg to stand on.

My real advice is to protect your sub. Stop there. I couldn't stop neo-Nazis from spreading lies on reddit, and you're not going to be able to control some air purifier salesman. Just keep them away from your sub, and let it go.

By the way, this magazine you're posting on is full of a bunch of people who have left reddit. Coming here to complain about things happening to you on reddit is not going to get you a lot of sympathy.

Reddit Activity Plummeted After The Protests - by Adam Bumas (www.garbageday.email)

Last month marked the official end of the Reddit protests. Any subreddit that had changed its rules or gone dark — or forced its users to post exclusively about John Oliver — has now gone back to normal. On the surface, it seems like a complete victory for Reddit, but things aren’t so simple when a major element of that...

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

Is Reddark still being updated? Cuz it still shows 1600+ subs as dark.

Is this yet another individual announcing the end without really knowing if it's over?

NASA moves a step closer to supersonic passenger flights (www.cnn.com)

In July, Lockheed Martin completed the build of NASA’s X-59 test aircraft, which is designed to turn sonic booms into mere thumps, in the hope of making overland supersonic flight a possibility. Ground tests and a first test flight are planned for later in the year. NASA aims to have enough data to hand over to US regulators...

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

We need bullet trains, not more passenger jets.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

The resulting aircraft/technology can be sold to commercial aviation and/or be used for military purposes

That is what companies like Boeing and Lockheed are for.

NASA has no business making airplanes for rich passengers.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

A commercial passenger plane should not be the subject of government research.

What do people use to start a blog nowadays? (kbin.social)

Now that Medium has fully enshittified, and Substack is well on its way, where can I publish for free with good discoverability and no paywall? I've considered starting my own blog site using a static site generator, but I figured I'd get people's thoughts prior to doing that. Thanks!

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

Baldur’s Gate 3 is certainly the latest and most prominent example, but Elden Ring, both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The Witcher 3. The Last of Us Part 1 and 2. No cash shops, substantive DLC, if there is any.

And what do all those games have in common?

They're solo games.

It's PvP and MMOs where you can purchase an advantage, show off your bling, or purchase expansions to get a head start on the competition. That is where the microtransaction infestation occurs.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

That game...had brutal hit boxes. You could blow people's legs off. I played a lotta pvp but not that mode.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

That sounds nice, but Shell has been broadcasting all matter of pro-environmental messaging for decades while continuing to fuck the planet up.

If I had to guess, this is a variation on a theme. As long as planes need fossil fuels to fly, they're bad new. Fixing one part is a distraction.

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. (gizmodo.com)

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

The media has declared reddit the winner multiple times since the protest started.

Fuck the media. There are still 1800+ restricted subreddits.

https://reddark.untone.uk

Who won? Anybody who realized that reddit was commodifying your posts, comments, and contributions and left that shitshack.

Barbarians of the fediverse, how about y'all move on from massive axes? (kbin.social)

Don't get me wrong, I know many of you also use these huge axes to manage your body hair, but enough is enough. How about spears with heads the size of a flounder? What about flounders? Have you ever seen someone get hit with a two-handed flounder? Kitchen appliances? There's a lot more creative ways to smite your enemies. You...

Anyone else miss StumbleUpon? I do.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

@readbeanicecream

The Stumbleupon devs were pioneers of what's happening to social media now.

We're not making money. Should we add advertising? Nope Should we require a subscription fee? Nope.

The problem is all these people using CSS to curate their finds on the web. This is NOT a blog (even though there was a button that said 'stumbleblog it').

Ohhh noooo, this is about the stumble button and nothing else (the button I no longer used much because other people's content was a faster way to find cool shit).

Now, we're going to wipe all of your work out and make this about THE BUTTON.

Every curator on the site bails, leaving only the turnips trying to use Stumble for SEO wank.

And that's how you destroy a good thing. I love how they're out there still trying to make their version work.

Hmm, let's see. Things'll get better if we change the name to Mix. We'll get lots more people to try our crap.

3 people show up.

I'm still mad about that. If they had asked me to pay for a subscription, I would have.

smh

  1. In recent years, I hear people say that things have been the same since Reagan. As someone who was there, not true. Did this trajectory on the right begin with Reagan? Sure. But things did not remain the same. They got progressively worse, especially this century.
  2. At the same time, it's hard to imagine how much people doted on him. He made the filthy rich filthy richer and sold it as good for everyone. I am glad to see him finally get his reckoning because it has been a long time coming. That cutesy smiley grandpa act was cover for much darker things.
Gargleblaster ,

Dragon's Lair, when you look back on it, was a corporate grab in the arcade world. Disney-level graphics when all the other games were 8-bit, and the worst gameplay ever in an arcade game...because it was made by someone who'd never set foot in an arcade.

The only competition it has for worst came later when that hologram game came later where you're a cowboy shooting...Native Americans. Another turd that was all graphics and nothing else.

This July 4th, let's remember that unfair economic treatment was a major cause of the American Revolutionary War. Our revolt has this much in common. (kbin.social)

There were numerous factors that led to the revolution, but a key one was unfair taxation. The British parliament was in a position of power and thought that they could behave with impunity for further profits....

Another situation where a company profits off of people communicating with each other.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

Now that I've been here a couple of weeks, kbin.social is chock full of recent reddit immigrants saying we need this, this, and this. Are these people going to do the programming? Nope.

We need to focus on posting, responding and communicating so that this place has more content.

People who will remain at an exploitative corporate website to avoid the inconvenience are not people I'm interested in trying to sell the fediverse to.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

I joined several of those clubs just to see what was happening.

They were all the same thing. Cat pics, personal photos, and inane discussions.

And then left.

For those in the know about privacy laws and the such. What is a proper response to reddit's claim that they cannot remove all the information associated to an account without first the user removing all of their posts? (kbin.social)

As the title says, Reddit replied to my GDPR request to delete all my data saying I had to do it first, which I suspect is in violation of GDPR law....

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

I don't have a solution to your question, but I started deleting my account annually so that it was harder to track me, spy on me, and sell my information.

Before I started doing that, I had an account with 900,000 karma. When you asked for your account to be deleted, the Reddit automated response was 'Are you sure you want to do this? After one month, all of your content will be deleted.' And that's what happened. If I look on reddit, my posts were gone. On google, I could find people mentioning my username but not any actual posts by that account.

TLDR: They used to threaten you with deleting all of your posts, and, based on my experience, they did exactly that with my old account.

It's kinda funny to see them flip to threatening to keep your content.

While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities (kbin.social)

Gaming, news, tech, general literature. All of these are somewhat thriving, with a steady influx of posts and comments. At the same time, the userbase is sorely lacking for more niche communities. In my case it'd be stuff like poetry, yoga, religion, linguistics, meditation. Or many other communities I'd doubt they'd form a...

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

There is the Fediverse, and there is kbin.social. I'm not even sure how to see what niche communities are out in the Fediverse. You'd have to go through each instance to see what magazines/communities (these are referred to differently in different places) exist out there. Is there a or could there be a directory of sorts to list your magazine/community so that others can find it?

I feel confident in saying we should not be planning to host every single community on kbin.social.

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

For those who are unaware, this is an updated version of this.

Ways to contribute monetarily? (kbin.social)

I imagine that with the influx of new users, instances paid by volunteers will be stretched. Some I imagine are creating instances, to spread out the load, but some of us cannot / don't want to create and manage instances. For these efforts to be successful I imagine that monetary support would be helpful....

Gargleblaster ,
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

You do not have to create your own instance to leave kbin.social. There's kbin.cafe, and many more. Here a list I found:

https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list

And remember that, wherever you move, you are still connected to this instance and can interact here.

Nobody has to pay anything to move. By moving, you are spreading the traffic out more evenly. If you were here for the first couple days of the protest, it was really laggy here and that was us all landing on kbin.social at the same time.
