The only true, "official" Mark Zuckerberg you can find on Mastodon is here:

https://sfba.social/@zuck@threads.net

Note that the URL appears to be claiming it's hosted on my instance

It's a clone; Follows or Replies to it here on Mastodon do not propagate back to the original on Threads, nor do replies over at the original/real Zuckerberg profile on Threads ever show up here

Search for Threads.net and look at Profiles and you can see which of these clones are visible here on Mastodon

No one (who really knows what deal Zuckerberg and Gargron have worked out) has explained why this is being done

But it's all a mirage

Old enough to remember when the official Mastodon site used to promote a diverse range of small instances, and made fun of Meta instead of collaborating with it.

This used to be on their front page, long gone now 😢

https://fedi.video/w/cbQE3NRw76FayQCSdb14TU

Instead, we now have a front page telling people to sign up on mastodon.social, an instance list that prioritises large instances, and a blog gushing over how wonderful it is to see Meta federating with them.

Greatly appreciate the work Eugen has done, but his current direction of travel is deeply worrying.

Imagine writing an open source twitter alternative

One that is federated and built on open protocols

Then having to deal with users who are upset you are working with an established walled garden social platform to support those very open protocols

Girl, you can't have it both ways

We can build better mod/safety tools

But

You can't moderate who gets to participate in an open protocol

Maybe let's focus on the important aspect, better mod/safety tools

I've reached out to Meta/Threads devs regarding Nodeinfo and stats numbers for https://FediDB.org, unfortunately their legal dept rejected this.

I will use estimated numbers with the hope they will see this and have justification for reporting accurate stats.

Even though I have my own reservations regarding Meta (and how they've treated Pixelfed), putting my ego aside for the benefit of the fediverse is required when running an essential fedi service like FediDB.

"but basically a few bugs led people to not be able to post with Pixelfed mentioned for a while, it turned out to be a bug, and there were other things but yeah"

"a few bugs"

Interesting how quickly you adopt the Meta party line on this

Meta was black-holing links to Pixelfed, they got caught and they got called-out, and Meta immediately blamed it on unspecified "bugs"

As mega-corporations do

Collapse of the main span of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after a Singapore-flagged container ship Dali collided with one of its support pillars around 01:27 a.m. EDT.

Number of vehicles and people fell into the water 185 feet below.

The bridge is part of the outer beltway around Baltimore and sits above the shipping lanes of one of the busiest ports on the east coast.

The main NS highway I-95 is not affected.

One video I watched started about 40 seconds before impact

To watch lights down low on the stern, the stern was bearing off to camera right, so off to ship portside, and the ship itself was turning to camera left, so bearing off to starboard

The moment of impact was pretty sickening

There was clearly light traffic up on the bridge

"The Dali cargo ship was piloted by local specialists, not the crew."

Well, actually...

...they're known as pilots

I'm pretty certain that there is no port in the Unites States of America where any commercial ship does not pick up a local pilot, well offshore, who is at the helm the entire time the ship is entering harbor and finally docking

The pilot has full control over the helm and the engine room comms

It's possible that Meta/Threads will interoperate with the Fediverse to expand people's access to each other in purely cooperative ways, for everyone's benefit.

But history tells us that it's vastly, vastly, vastly more likely that the Meta will, borg-like, follow Big Tech's normal pattern of "embrace, extend, extinguish" -- because there's no history of giant platforms doing anything else.

So we all need to prepare, right now, for what we do about it -- and not wait until it happens.

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

    @Deadman

Couple thoughts, because I read some common misunderstandings

    1. The Fediverse is a broad, generic concept like "democracy"

No one is running "Fediverse" anywhere or is homed on a "Fediverse" instance

    1. is a protocol, a specification if you will

It must be implemented in a specific software distribution (to varying degrees of accuracy) to exist

Again, no one is running "ActivityPub" anywhere or is homed on an "ActivityPub" instance

    1. "Viewing content from other , one needs to follow a profile from that instance"

    and

"Explicitly viewing instance content, user needs to sign up on their instance"

    No

I can go to your instance in a web browser, to /public/local/ and read the public posts on your specific instance

    Here: https://mstdn.social/public/local

But no, I cannot see anyone's Home feed unless I follow that person, or follow hashtags which we use and Follow in common

Which is the only reason I saw your post in the first place, the hashtag

    FinchHaven ,

    @Linux_Is_Best

Probably shouldn't get into this, but...

If you're referring to the Catodon guy's post yesterday and you can actually look at the entire thread, scroll down to where I explicitly ask him if he's had actual, recent, out-of-band communication with Kainoa

    He hasn't

He's saying the caretaker is going to "keep maintaining and developing Firefish, and a new stable version will finally soon be released" which no one has confirmed anywhere

In his reply to me he makes that statement and mid-sentence changes the subject and tells me if I don't like Firefish dot Social I should just move to another distro

Which what not my question at all

He does that a lot: changes the subject mid-sentence as a distraction to evade making a direct statement

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads ( kbin.social )

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

"If were to somehow get an influence in , just switch to switch to switch to So many choices"

This exposes how little (if anything) the writer understands about any of those distributions

Mastodon is not interchangeable with Lemmy

Mastodon is not interchangeable with Pixelfed

Mastodon is not interchangeable with Firefish

    Period

Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.

    Yesterday I said this:

"It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."

Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.

I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.

The judge may be right . . .

    So what about this idea:

Just when Eric was about to completely dig himself into a perjury hole re: his pleading the 5th in 2020, Kise tries to throw up a distraction by pissing-off Engoron

The overall point is that, as it has been again and again, this is not a jury trial

We can all make jokes about playing to Trump, but it's Engoron who is the real audience

And have no doubt: he remembers everything and will forget nothing

Eric's having pleaded the fifth in the fall of 2020 and his subsequent contrived performance today over the very same subject matter will not fool Engoron for one second

It seems like Mastodon is losing its mindshare to among many academics.

I can't help but think this has to do with the self-imposed limitations of Mastdon — lack of quotes, ordered timeline, etc. Makes it less interesting to use, for no real advantage.

Sad, because the underlying decentralization is much more robust.
