I suppose it's inevitable, but the amount of ridiculous propaganda being posted here by a small by a number of people is making this community both less useful and less pleasant. Bizarre conspiracy theories and hatred are not news.

I generally agree with the content of the article, but the headline destroys its credibility. No one who might possibly have their mind changed is going to go anywhere near it.

I will admit to over-reacting. I'm just sick of watching people with something important to say undermine themselves by adopting the emotionally exploitive rhetoric of the other side.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

I knew that was true of new articles, but did not realize it also happened with opinion pieces like this one. Thank you for the information.

    Startpage is a good choice. I am currently experimenting with searXNG. It seems a little messier to use, but I'm getting more relevant results and less junk.

    That is a concern, but they seem to have taken precautions to prevent that from being exploited, at least in the short term. We'll have to see how it works out. I haven't given up on them yet.

    Way back in the day HP was one of the best technology companies around. They were innovative, produced high quality products, and were a good place to work. It makes me sad that HP is now one of the worst tech companies and has among the strongest anti-consumer attitudes.

    I didn't say anything about stopping the manufacture of medications. There are any number of ways that could be handled which would be an improvement over our current pharmaceutical industry.

    The advice about turning off the water from inside is the best solution. Having said that, I don't always do it. The weather has been so variable over the last few years that turning the water on and off got to be a hassle. I do shut if off when we hit the main stretch of winter, but I use covers to guard against the unseasonable freezes that happen on either side of that. I have not had any problems over several years of this, so I think I can say that they work.

    It isn't just about businesses. There used to be a lot more free apps on the Play Store, but keeping up with constantly-changing requirements makes that impractical. You can't just put something up and leave it. You have to work on frequently or it gets dropped. You also have to keep up with their demands to limit certain features and to provide new information or it gets dropped.

    I used to have a handful of free apps up on Play. Now they are all gone because I just don't have the time to rewrite them every few months.

    I have already done that. My apps.aslanrefuge.org site has downloadable APKs for everything. It also has the code, for anyone who wants to tinker with it.

    I just wish there was a better way. I need to look into F-Droid and other options.

    There are two kinds of groups that push changes to society based on morality. Those who want to provide more freedom and rights to people who are at an unfair disadvantage under the system and those who want to impose restrictions and penalties on people who do things they don't like. The latter groups are almost never sincere. The actions they oppose are just an excuse for making people they don't like suffer. As a result, they are often caught do the exact things they say they oppose, because they don't really care about the actions themselves.

    What is the least shit online store of the shitty ones? such as: Wish, AliExpress, etc..

    What is the least shitty shit store? Never had a good experience with any of the shops such as, wish, aliexpress and the rest of em. Are there any of these "low priced" stores that...

    AliExpress screwed me recently. A vendor sent me the wrong items. I mean, they weren't even the same kind of items. I disputed it with the vendor and they said they'd sent the right things, so there.

    I opened a case with AliExpress. They asked me for a whole lot of information, some of which didn't make any sense, along with some pictures. I sent them everything. They sided with the vendor.

    Fortunately, I had paid with PayPal. PayPal looked over the information from both sides and promptly refunded my money.

    I don't expect to be doing business with AliExpress again any time soon.

    When the GOP says "family friendly" what they mean is heterosexual white male friendly. Anyone else can be discriminated against, harassed, abused, denied protection under the law, denied medical care, and left to survive without food or housing. The only other class that has special rights are unborn children, who lose that status the instant they are born.

    I am terribly surprised that ultra-rich sociopaths have no empathy toward mankind.

    The real issue here is not that these people support a terrible vision of the future; it's that we are allowing these sociopaths to run our world now.

    I used to wonder why conservatives always seem to be hypocrites. I finally came to the conclusion that it isn’t anything inherent about legitimate conservative philosophy. The problem is with any extremist movement that decides their cause justifies ignoring the opinions of others, the rules of society, and of the law. When winning by any means is acceptable you have moved out of the realm of politics and and into insurrection and revolution.

    I recently switched to FairEmail. It’s a really nice app and works much better than anything else I’ve tried. And it would be a shame if it were abandoned.

    On the other hand, I have published a few things to Google Play myself. Google has made constant effort necessary to keep up with their policies. It wasn’t worth the trouble for someone like me who just casually released things I built for my own use. I can’t blame anyone else for deciding to step away from it either.

    It is appalling that he also has to deal with abuse and threats for performing a public service.

    This is why we can’t have nice things. {sigh}
