Isn't this pretty common in a lot of consumer electronics? Pretty sure power banks and hard drives frequently have weights added to them

Some of the hurtles I've encountered using privacy focused chat apps with friends and family is the lack of smooth group chats and adding people remotely.

Some apps have a QR code feature but also allow you to enter a code. It can be a challenge to setup with older family members.

An open source app for those bag, key, and wallet trackers. Maybe I just haven't been able to find one

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I'm not looking for a Tile-like network. Most of these cheap devices seem to work off of just letting you know when you are disconnecting from their Bluetooth as far as I know.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Adding to your list some devices have open source projects that breath new life into them. For example an old kinect for an Xbox 360 can be used for motion tracking on a PC and, if I recall correctly, a webcam.

Another example is the LeapFrog Leapster GS running RetroArch.

A lot of it can be just fun novelty projects to do throughout a weekend

What does OSRS stand for?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Oh yeah I used to browse that one a lot because I was curious about the world outside of what we see in-game. At the time there were some errors like a character being said listed as Australian because one other character said they were going to put them “down under” and stuff being miss-cited because of material like Fallout Extreme and the Fallout Bible but it seems like it got a lot better since then

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Why is that?

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I’ve been meaning to play it for a while but this major update may finally push me to just like it did with Cyberpunk

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

From what I’ve seen it seems a bit more targeted at teens and adults then kids and that’s kind of what I wanted Harvest Moon to be to begin with so I’m pretty excited to play it.

Also generally the added depth and how fleshed out it seems

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Looking forward to seeing them but it seems like they being announced on December 9th

CorrodedCranium ,

I know they said the mods were deleting posts about whatever it was but do you have a link to the discussion or proof?

The tip toeing around stuff definitely does get tiring but I think some people just flock there because there’s a lot of people and Reddit still dominates search results

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

There could be a few reasons beyond what I already mentioned. A lot of people thought the blackout on Reddit was a trend or unnecessary and that wasn't helped when Reddit forced a lot of subs to reopen.

I'm not sure though. I wonder if they have a post addressing it

One entry, from November 11, talked about how some of the artists at Rockstar wanted to make a zombie survival game after finishing Vice City. The working title was “Z,” which Vermeij explains was “pronounced Zed, not Zee.” It was intended to use Vice City’s code, set on a “windswept foggy Scottish island,” where players would be under constant attack from the undead. The main focus for players would be acquiring fuel for vehicles, but after just a month of work, apparently the team just found it too depressing. They got to work on San Andreas instead.

Glad the article included some of the things they mentioned in their blog. It’s interesting to read.

I wonder if something they said is still deep in Rockstar’s catalogue of things they want to try and that’s why they shot it down

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I do prefer the abbreviated month with the yyyy mmm dd format. It makes things relatively easy to sort but you also don’t have to worry about confusing others if you are referring to the 10th month or day for example.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

The only reason I could see is if you were speaking it. September 18th 2012 for example might sound a bit better than 18 September 2012.

This major change won’t affect existing EndeavourOS users as they will be able to continue enjoying the Arch Linux-based distro with their favorite desktop environment. On the other hand, the devs removed the Sway, Qtile, BSPWM, Openbox, and Worm community editions from the Calamares installer as there’s no one left to maintain them.

May also be relevant to some users.

The devs explain the switch from Xfce to KDE Plasma as a way to make EndeavourOS development and maintenance easier for them as they have a more native experience with the Calamares installer.

Could someone explain to me why the Calamares installer would have to do with them deciding on KDE over XFCE?

Is this VPN comparison breakdown trustworthy?

I’m shopping for a VPN providers, and really struggling to find a detailed and non-biased breakdown of the various options. A number of years ago, I recall finding an extremely detailed VPN comparison spreadsheet that had 30+ columns, which were contained criteria by which the VPNs were judged both quantitatively and...

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

It does seem a bit sporadic. Surfshark seems to be on top above other providers like Mullvad and ProtonVPN. It might have a bit to do with how it weights various criteria.

What VPN is best for you really depends on what you value. A bunch of people left Mullvad for example because they no longer offer port forwarding which can complicate things like bit torrenting for example.

I think the closest you can get to that is illegal numbers

Another example could be clean room design. Essentially reverse engineering code without using copyrighted code. Having someone on a team who has reviewed leaked code could compromise a project and make it more likely to be hit with a copyright claim if they slip up.

This has been an issue/topic of debate with multiple open source projects such as ReactOS.

I could be slightly off here but this is my understanding of it. I hope someone corrects me if I’m off base.

What about something like the Thinkpad X201? It’s not ultralight but it is quite small.

Other than that I’d probably say a Chromebook with a Linux install. Second hand they are quite cheap and can likely do what you are after. A lot of them have passive cooling which is nice for a couch device. I was able to install libreboot on my C201P quite easily and now it just runs a traditional Linux install

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah the heat would be what would make me hesistate to use it as a couch laptop but if OP wants something cheap I would say it’s an okay option

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah it kind of feels like they wanted to cram in a lot of cultural references that happened the last couple years to make up for lost time

@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I wonder if this is still the case and how much of the original staff is still there

Yeah the crypto episode really felt like it was a bit late to the party

CorrodedCranium ,

For media 1337x is great. For video games though there was the the controversy of the admins allowing a Bitcoin miner in a BG3 torrent 3 months ago.

Mostly irrelevant to what you were saying but still good to know for new comers who don’t know different sources can be good for different things.

What are you right in the top right corner to view system status?

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Bit of an obvious one but try out new DEs in a VM before installing it on hardware. It is a pretty big time saver especially if you are ricing it.

Other than that looking at extensions for file managers you use. There’s some neat ones and the Arch Wiki is a good place to find them

Worms for the GBA. A friend got me into WMD but I figured I’d give the older games a try with a handheld emulator I have.

I have a PS Vita and one of the games is available on that so I may give it a try sometime

I use GrapheneOS and like it a lot.

Is the option to toggle network access for applications available in other OSs? Maybe I just didn’t notice it until now but it’s an option I’ve really been enjoying

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah kind of a similar story but on my iBook G4 I had trouble getting wireless internet working with modern distros because b43-fwcutter (I think) was unavailable. I ended up installing Yellow Dog Linux to get around it

Several news outlets have something similar. The BBC has an Onion domain for example.

Anyone know a good, hackable bluetooth mp3 player? Fitbit recently disabled transferring music to my Versa 1. Any cheap, preferably physically clippable, mp3 players? I guess storage being accessible over USB would be enough, but I'd love a device that is easily hackable to my hearts content.

You may want to check out Rockbox compatible devices. I think there’s some flippable SanDisk ones.

Modern Warfare 3 download is huge (200GB) due to “increased amount of content” (www.pcgamesn.com)

Ah, yes. The “let’s bloat our game size to bully other games off your SSD so you’ll be reluctant to ever uninstall it, because reinstalling it would be a big pain, that way you’ll play it indefinitely and give us extra money in micro transactions” strategy.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Ah, yes. The “let’s bloat our game size to bully other games off your SSD so you’ll be reluctant to ever uninstall it, because reinstalling it would be a big pain, that way you’ll play it indefinitely and give us extra money in micro transactions” strategy.

I don’t think that’s really the strategy at play. It seems more like they are under the impression that it’s not their problem and gamers will do what they can to play.

Activision then clarifies that “as part of our ongoing optimization efforts, your final installation size will be actually smaller than the combined previous Call of Duty experiences” and goes on to say we can manage all of the files “in the ‘manage files’ section of the CoD HQ launcher menu.” This means that any unused content that you find you’re not actively playing through is available to selectively uninstall.

I would say they just don’t care but the above line is a welcome addition.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Kind of.

“Modern Warfare 3 is almost here,” Activision begins its post detailing the release and file sizes. “In preparation, we would like to provide an update on file sizes which are larger than last year.” The publisher explains that the larger sizes are “due to the increased amount of content available” on launch day, such as the highly anticipated open-world Zombies and items from previous games like Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone’s maps.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I would be curious if a large game would push people towards installing or uninstalling more. Personally I keep the 10GB indie titles on my Steam Deck and uninstall anything over 100GB.

Unless you are pirating the game and need to redownload it I wouldn’t give uninstalling it a second thought.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I’m always surprised when I see articles like this sporadically come up.

These days you can mold games into whatever you want them to be with mods. It’s a deliberate action by the consumer and fits right in with rule 34 content.

There’s also a lot of bigger targets out there for adult content like Skyrim and the Sims.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I don’t think they really need to say anything is my point. It would be like Mojang commenting about gun mods for Minecraft

Thanks to fan projects, it’s still possible to play EverQuest as it used to be. The latest fan-run classic EverQuest server, Project Quarm, launched on October 1. Like other unofficial fan servers the Al’Kabor Project and Project 1999 before it, Quarm strives to present the game as it existed back in the first couple years of the game’s life—warts and all. Unlike Project 99, however, this server will progress through the classic era all the way through the 2002 Planes of Power expansion, seen by many to be the peak of the EQ experience.

Always cool to see fan projects like this. I know there are a few out there but I’m struggling to remember the names of them.

I thought there was one for Ultima Online I saw but that might have just been an article about its official online mode.

The article really seems to be for people who played EverQuest or similar MMOs a while back and are nostalgic about them though

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

What do you mean by sanitized?

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Interesting. Once the development of Lemmy slows down a couple years from now it would be interesting to see a video detailing the hiccups around its growth

According to Steam's terms and conditions can they remove games from your library and are Steam emulators allowed?

This is in reference to a post titled https://leminal.space/post/1113224. The title is kind of self-explanatory and piracy was brought up in the comments. Someone mentioned GOG and Steam granting users indefinite licenses to users regardless of whether or not the game is still being sold....

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

(Not your fault; I don't mean to sound like I'm arguing with you.)

I didn't take it that way. It is a lot of faith to put into a company when some people have invested thousands of dollars into their game library

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I get what you mean I have an older laptop I like to run less demanding games on like the original Fallout games but the Steam client takes a while to launch. Ideally I'd like something between small mode/SteamCMD and the normal client.
