This assumes everyone who values privacy can afford another $10mo sub in their life or that it should cost money in the first place. In an issue of consent that shouldn’t be the case.

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

You are conflating a lot of different things here and I’m a little too busy at work today to completely disentangle it, but the short version is that none of us are ignorant about what “free“ means online. That is not the debate here so I’m not sure why you’re going off on that when I don’t even disagree there in the first place. It’s just not relevant.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

You’re free to not own or use a car. Should we have no rights when it comes to cars as well?

You’re free to not use the internet. Should we have no rights online?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

What does the monetization scheme have to do with whether or not we have consumer and privacy rights beyond how it infringes on them?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I never said anything of the sort and I don't know why whether or not the service is mandatory matters. That isn't the bar for us to have consumer/privacy rights.

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

They can’t assign any concessions they wants that’s the entire point. You have rights you can’t sign away even if you want to. I mean dude you’re defending facebook, arguably the single worst company when it comes to respecting user data and privacy. Your assumption should be they are probably wrong until proven otherwise.

Is There a Way to Officially Disable a Lemmy Account?

I would like to know if there is an "official" way to set an account as disabled. For now, I am plan on posting this on Asklemmy, changing my password to some random string that I won't remember, and then logging out. If I'd like to come back later, there's a chance of my account being revived through the "forgot password"...

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I get wanting to delete old accounts before leaving sites. That’s not really unreasonable.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I know you’re going to feel like this thread validates how you’re feeling, but I do encourage you to look at it from our point of view: wanting to delete your account for your own mental health/because you aren’t enjoying this site is valid. Nobody can force you to stay or like this place. But a lot of this post seems more like you wanted to soapbox about your concerns under the guise of “help me delete my account.”

Given your title is pretty straightforward and asking for a technical solution, a lot of people are going to come in here out of curiosity or out of a desire to help you. So imagine their reaction when 3/4 of the post is not exactly a manifesto, but certainly a lengthy indictment of sorts that is squarely directed at us, the community, as the problem. We also don’t have context for who or what you’re upset about besides “politics.”

Lines like this one are unproductive and actively poking the bear if your goal is positivity and productive interactions:

Of course, a lot of people will disagree with this approach, and they are likely already coming up with comments to post on this thread that I’d find rude and thus negative. But I’ve seriously had enough of it.

I’m sure there are things in here we all need to hear. And yes, unfortunately Internet forums tend to bring out a little more negativity in people. I am certainly guilty of that at times. But I do urge you to consider what your reaction would be if you stumbled across a post like this yourself.

Also given the number of us who came here because of Reddit’s terrible management and utter disdain for their own users, throwing out that you are leaving here for Reddit is not exactly going to engender sympathy. Especially if your primary concern is quality of conversation, negativity, and politics showing up in every thread.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I don’t think they assumed that would be the case, in fact, I don’t think they made any particular assumptions here. Hence why they asked the question: “is it possible?” It’s also probably beneath you to attack someone’s intellect like that just for asking a question on a community dedicated to asking questions.

Most websites have some sort of account deletion/disable feature with varying degrees of thoroughness. You’re acting like this person is asking for the impossible or unreasonable, and I don’t really know why.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I appreciate your hearing me out. I could probably follow your example more often on that front haha

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

It is kind of wild how even with how much experience many of us have online and on forums, with all that we know about the social behaviors it brings out, we can still get kind of nasty anyway.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I wrote a more thorough response explaining why they are getting the reaction they are. I don’t disagree with you about most of their post. But delete, disable, whatever you wanna call it. We all know what they’re asking.

I understand this won’t be a popular statement, but to me, it falls under I know it when I see it.

I don’t know the exact location of the line, but there is no artistic, scientific, or any other kind of merit to someone making deepfake nudes of a 14 year old and circulating them around school. The victim comes first in these cases. I don’t want to debate what is or isn’t child porn. I think we all agree this girl was a victim and this should never have happened.

To get away from the minors-argument: it’s just like how I can’t go around shooting photos of random people when they’re naked and then circulate them. Hell you can barely do that even if they aren’t naked except in particular circumstances where consent to be photographed is taken as a given.

Non-consensual deepfakes should, by and large, not be allowed.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Deepfakes are already so good in many cases that the differences are basically trivial. The gulf between writing and committing murder is far wider. Not a great parallel IMO.

How would you feel if someone spread nude deepfakes of you? Your partner? Your child? Are you telling me that’s just like writing about doing something and not closer to committing the act and you’d just shrug and move on with your life?

Open source e reader ( lemmy.ml )

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). Input symptoms and patient info -> spits out odds they have x, y, or z -> doctor looks at that as a supplement to their own work or to look for more unlikely possibilities they haven't thought of because they're a bit unusual. Doctors aren't gods, they can't recall everything perfectly. It's as useful as any toxicology report or other information they get.

I am not doing my edits by hand. I am not using a blade tool and spooling film. I am not processing it. My computer does everything for me, I simply tell it what to do and it spits out the desired result (usually lol). Without my eyes and knowledge the inputs aren't good and the outputs aren't vetted. With a person, both are satisfied. This is how all computer usage basically works, and AI tools are no different. Input->output, quality depends on the computer/software and who is handling it.

TL;DR: Garbage in, garbage out.

I’m here and I’m interested in this. You do not speak for all of us.

BolexForSoup ,

You chose funny examples because a lot of people basically own a “license“ of those things and don’t even know it. Especially if they’re using a crypto exchange. They don’t own shit

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

If you buy on an exchange and don’t transfer to your wallet no you do not own it. Until it’s in your wallet, it’s theirs. They will transfer it to you when you call for it. THEN it’s yours.

Not your keys, not your crypto.

If you’re using earbuds then being a codec snob is kind of unnecessary tbh. And if you want quality, wireless, repairable electronics made in a more ethical way, they cost a premium. $150 is not unreasonable.

Edit: I meant wireless, and I don’t need another lecture on codecs. Please read the responses before dogpiling and repeating each other. Thanks.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Then these aren’t for you and that’s fine. You don’t value what they offer, and you’re not obligated to buy them. Some of us do.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I meant to say wireless earbuds but yes you are correct

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Then don’t buy them and keep buying from less ethical sources. You’re not the target market for this. It’s fine.

Neoliberalism is a conservative ideology so it would be on /r/conservative. It’s the ideology of the 90’s and 2000’s GOP up through Trump. Despite “liberal” in the name it’s not actually “liberal” as we know it.

But yes otherwise totally agree with you.
