Saw your post and I got curious, as it's clear your new threads aren't appearing on the instances you're posting to.

Test run shows that posting to lemmy.world is working for my account: https://lemmy.world/post/6641504 .

There's a couple things that could be happening, but I'm gonna go with my gut and ask do you have any domains blocked? There's been repeated issues with domain blocking affecting your ability to post (in fact, I had to clear all my domain blocking to properly post to kbin). This is the first thing I'd check.

The next thing would be to see if those instances or communities banned you. This seems unlikely, as it's affecting you on both lemmy.world and lemmy.blahaj.zone. The last thing could be that these communities have defederated or blocked kbin users due to past spam issues (@Technology is still blocked on lemmy.world due to this), but I haven't seen it implemented in this way before.

But I'd start with the domain blocking - 90% of the time when people have problems posting on kbin, that's the cause.

Arotrios ,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

Bummer - looks like your post did show on lemmy.blahaj.zone, and I see that you got one up on @gothindustrial. Leads me to think it might be a community ban on @spookymemes for why your toy post didn't show up there. blahaj.zone was probably just slow.

If someone continues to harass you after you've blocked them, it's because they're lonely and want your attention. I've found that offering comforting and condescending words while reverse spamming them with Eleanor Rigby seems to end the harassment quickly... especially when they realize that they can't block you properly either.

You'd probably be better served by posting this link in your profile description if you're really looking to drive cross-traffic.

"Fuck it" is the most powerful and subsequently destructive phrase in the English language, allowing one to ignore consequence in favor of pure action, with the tactic acceptance that you've likely released forces far beyond your control.

For a phrase with so much destructive potential, it's interesting to note that the root of the phrase goes back to sex, the act of creation, and even possibly love. Sex is the effort to produce a child, a force which will, whether you like it or not, grow beyond your control.

"Kill it" doesn't have the oomph. Why not, when it essentially speaks to the same destructive dynamic and disregard of consequence?

Because "kill it" invokes death, which is to put to rest. "Fuck it" invokes life, which is to spark chaos.

This article stinks of an agenda. The author goes out of their way not to mention the term Fediverse (pluriverse? wtf is that?), and they clearly haven't done their due diligence on Activity Pub. Either they skimped on the research or this article was heavily edited afterwards to remove any concept of the Fediverse being a viable alternative to centralized platforms. Doesn't surprise me coming from Business Insider.

That being said, the overall dynamic the article speaks to is valid, as is the discussion it engenders, so have an upvote despite my gripes with the writing.

@jcrm Lol - I figured out how to do this accidentally. You may have noticed that Jailbait doesn't appear in the top bar anymore.

It's because I posted this to it (sfw and 18+ by a long shot, but you'll still want eyebleach). Apparently that top bar of communities prioritizes those that have no posts. Take a look - you'll see every suggested community is empty. Posting to one removes it from the selection algorithm.

Pinging @ernest as it looks like the sorting on that top bar algorithm is achieving the opposite of its intended purpose.

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:

A lot of those single tracks you see up on Bandcamp are the musicians trying to raise enough money to finish production on work they play live.

It's much easier to play live than it is to record. Recording is a major financial stumbling block for a lot of new musicians, on top of the time and work that takes place inside the studio. Properly mixing a track requires a fine ear, advanced technical knowledge, usually takes at least as long to complete as it did to write and record the track. This gets expensive as well - there's a reason sound production engineers generally make more than musicians.

This is why signing with a label is such a big deal for most bands - having that money up front to complete an album, as well as the label's connections with recording studios and their engineers, removes the biggest obstacle they have for getting their music out there.

Arotrios ,

@momo Production is tight, as are your lyrics - I don't think you need any help from rappers - got enough talent to spare. Found the poetry too:

Pour oil into your dry heart uh
Made to be fire, overheated atmosphere ayy
I'm too ill, everyone knows this
The temperature that swallowed the sun don’t you forget it
Armageddon when I get it, make the world shake
Is this your first time? A character like this I'm a rare case
Run the city all night like the mayor, ayy
Too fly, get you out of my airspace

The slow beat and the bass is solid - gives you the range to play with those angelic vocals, but the spot above is where the soul is - both in the music and the performance. I'm beginning to think the three of you are best when you're bad and let that fire out. Plus, it's clear that you've got the skills to play with a faster beat - as that link @ 2:00 minutes proves.

Arotrios ,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

@momo True that. Brings to mind this quote:

Every day, women and girls are finding incredible confidence and taking risks. When they change one mind, pretty soon, they have changed one tradition. That changed tradition has changed a village. That one village has changed a country. That new reality means new opportunities for themselves and their daughters.

  • Jill Biden

This is what the three of you have done for millions - even from a thousand miles away I can see the change it's brought not just to your country, but to the world. The risks you take in expressing your power and truth bring the strength and faith to your audience that they need to face a world on fire.

Also, wanted to say, I drew out the lyrics and moment above not because they're sexy/sensual (your whole video has that in spades - y'all got that down pat), but because that's where the soul power is, and that's what I meant by being bad - ala George Thoroughgood - like him, I think y'all got the the presence and chops to absolutely thrash when you kick loose.

Plus y'all sing a lot better than old Georgie... ;)

It is incredibly frustrating that the only thing more stupid than Patreon is all the alleged Patreon substitutes that clearly don't even understand what Patreon does.

Pro tip: Patreon has no meaningful competitors, and also it sucks, so there's a huge opportunity for somebody to kick sand in its face and take its lunch money. But to do that you would have to understand what actually Patreon does that is worth it to creators to allow Patreon to take 5% of their proceeds (and then pass on to them a second 5% in payment processing fees).

Arotrios , (edited )
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

@siderea This is an epic post, well written with excellent points - it's quite informative to get an inside view of how Patreon has been treating its content creators, and where you feel it's failed. The shortform Mastodon format doesn't do your work justice. Have you posted it other spots in its entirety yet? I'd like to see it posted it as a thread on the @13thFloor - I think it brings up great discussion points for content creators everywhere.

"It's the content, stupid." - Quick Notes to Supercharge K.Bin (kbin.social)

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

Arotrios ,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

@inkican - Agreed - Kbin will live or die based on its content. One thing that should be mentioned to those on the fence about contributing is how powerful Kbin is as a publishing platform in comparison to either Mastodon or Lemmy - this is one of the few places where you can post and get your content on both style of instances.

There are a couple of factors degrading contribution that could be alleviated by more stringent moderation - particularly the bot networks and downvote spammers. I've seen a couple of instances where folks have gotten bullied out of trying to run a forum, and Kbin's flaws in blocking (a blocked user can still downvote your posts and message you), make ongoing harassment an issue for contributors. No one wants to submit something to have it shat upon.

The other factor is that a number of users set up magazines, grabbing popular names from Reddit, then did nothing to maintain them. I think removing or reassigning these ghost magazines to interested moderators would go a long way in improving the content quality here now that the dust has settled from the Reddit collapse.

From a moderator standpoint, if you're looking to expand the reach of your magazine and get new subscribers (and thus, hopefully, more contributors), one thing I've found that helps expand the audience is using a Lemmy account to crosspost, as the cross-posting functionality is built into that architecture and provides a link back to the original. This both expands the range of the content, and draws subscribers from Lemmy that normally wouldn't see you on Kbin to subscribe to your magazine. Mastodon is similar - a single supportive account there boosting magazine content expands your reach dramatically.

Side note: I run @13thFloor and wanted to say if you or your users ever feel like cross-posting our scifi content from there, or cross-posting your content to our magazine, feel free to do so - we fucking love scifi over here.

Arotrios ,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

For those having issues with the aforementioned downvote trolls, @some_guy and @YourContentSucks kindly showed up to illustrate the problem. These two accounts are accompanied by a third, @cre0 -all the same user. If you're pre-emptively looking to protect your users from downvote spam, keep these accounts out of your magazines - he likes to try to dox folks. This is his theme song.

@momo This is a frequent misquote. Poe wasn't in a good state when my grandad's godfather tried to cheer him up. It's actually "Evermore", as in the Battle of Evermore. That tune has been rockin' the woodlands since the bards began to sing, so if you're hearing a raven squawk that at you, that means the Morrigan is looking to rock out and has sent you a request via corvid.

@ViolaB The only way to find love is to stop looking for it in other people, find what you love in yourself, and let yourself have as much fun with it as possible, until you no longer feel lonely.

Only when you stop looking does love truly appear, because then it's drawn not to your need or to fill a hole in your heart, but to dance with who you really are.

What this means in practical terms is that you should pour yourself a drink, throw on your favorite music, and do whatever makes you the happiest until the sun rises, or sets, love finds you, or you pass out. Regardless of the outcome, you'll have done your soul good.

"Burning Man has countercultural roots and, once upon a time, it was a celebration of creativity and a counterpoint to mindless consumerism. Over the past few years, however, it has become massively commodified and started attracting some of the worst people on earth. Nowadays, it is an excuse for influencers and Silicon Valley types to take a bunch of drugs and party in the desert while pretending they are doing something meaningful that elevates the world’s consciousness. Burning Man is supposed to be about “radical self-reliance” and yet a number of attendees appear to be flown in on private jets and shacked up in luxury accommodation with air conditioning. I don’t care how exotic the drugs or how interesting the art is: once people such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk show up to your party, there is no longer anything countercultural about it. You are not rebelling against the man. You are the man."

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/commentisfree/2023/sep/05/why-all-the-burning-man-schadenfreude-where-do-i-start-

Arotrios ,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

As someone who watched the Burning Man scene begin, evolve, and become what it is today, it was clear from near 2000 on that it was destined to become a parody of itself.

Plus, as someone who has spent their life working to encourage creativity and preserve it, something about Burning Man always struck me as deeply wrong on a spiritual level. I think of all of the wonderful artworks that could be adorning our streets and walls that are nothing now but ash on the playa and it honestly makes me want to smack my head into the wall. I get the point of sacrifice, of creating art for art's sake, and respect the mythos of the Wicker Man, but shit has gotten too far out of hand.

If you really want to be revolutionary, bring your art back to your neighborhood. Live it every day, not just during summer vacation. Put it out there for free if you want to flip off capitalism, but don't destroy it. That which inspires you to create is holy and a part of your soul, and it's result deserves much better than the flames.

@Ryntastic Sorry for hijacking a month-old comment of yours, but it inspired me to speak out, and I've been holding my tongue about the BM scene for a long time.
