I post videos a few times a year to share events with family. I just posted a few yesterday. I can’t in good faith continue to post to YT and encourage my family to use it as the platform declares war on their users.

But what else is there that allows me to post videos for free and my family can just watch them without having to install a new app, register for yet another service or configure some obscure plug in?

It references a sort of partnership with K9 Mail on android, but later says they’re looking to expand Thunderbird into the iOS & Android space. Either they’ll be direct competitors of each other or they’ll start to blend into each other. I’m wondering which.

In the early kernel (think pre 1.0), I “fixed” the CPU scheduler for performance. I gave too much privilege to user processes, who refused to relinquish control back to the OS.

Another time I was working on a multiprocess bootup configuration (before systemd) in a configuration where the main process would orchestrate the workers. Well, the main process would fork a child to do the work, then the child process would fork a child process to do it’s work. It was infinite delegation and I ran out of pids.

I still file by mail because if somebody were to do something with my taxes in transit, it’s a federal crime vs e-filing where everybody whose network it passes through gets a copy, legally.

I have a windows VM for a couple of other applications but iTunes wouldn’t detect the device was plugged in inside the VM. This was several years ago and maybe the VM landscape has changed. I could try it again.

I started down this path after discovering that iTunes was flagging some of my music that I ripped from my own CDs or my dad’s old records (that I now own). It shows on the iPod as “not available in this region” despite purchasing the physical CD from the record store across town!

The iPod is used 99% of the time in my car hooked to the radio, but I’ll bring it into the office from time to time. I’ve been thinking to build something with a raspberry pi and big SD or SSD so that it shows up on my home WiFi when I park and I can syncthing or drag and drop music, but I don’t have a lot of time to play. The iPod was a Xmas gift from my dad and (I know it’s stupid) but I want to keep using it if I can.

+1 for FOSS, but it’s not easy to do. It’s sort of like going vegan. It’s great at first, but then you try to go out to eat and it’s hard, family gatherings become difficult and political, people start to push meat or question your motives. You still feel good about it because you’re doing it “for the animals” or whatever, but you’re no longer in the mainstream. While your coworkers all go out to that new steak joint, you’re left behind with your bag of broccoli.

To elaborate, look at Lemmy. You can get FOSS apps for your phone to browse Lemmy, but now try to coordinate some event, like your local soccer club using only FOSS. Plenty of folks are content to blindly consume what Zuck or Goog wants them to see and use.

OSMAnd uses Open Street Maps data for it’s map, so the product can be mature but the data is not for the area you were navigating.

I’ve been on a crusade to fill the holes in the data for the places I go, including house and business numbers using OpenStreetMap. If everyone were to do this for the places they go, we’d have all the addresses filled in and more!

Ohh! Yeah, the search is awful. I use a separate address to coordinate search, but it’s online, so I need to do it before I go off into the countryside.

The only thing I’ve seen work on occasion is to put the house number after the street, like “river drive 123”

For me, it was an advertisement in my gmail for something my spouse had searched for on a separate computer that I had never logged on to. I don’t recall what it was, but it was something like a new cookware set. It was odd. I started noticing it happening again with other people whom I correspond with for items I don’t need (dog kennels near you). I wasn’t on any social media except maybe YouTube.

Later, I started reading about the profiles companies keep, how you have no control over what is collected, for how long or if you want it to stop. I found myself using the computer less and less, feeling uncomfortable being watched if I looked up medical symptoms or just shopping around for things.

My family would show how cool it is that Google knows when you have a doctor appointment and where you are and what traffic is doing so that you need to leave in 10 minutes to get there on time. I found it creepy.

I awoke to see cameras everywhere, tracking cookies, apps tracking me for no reason. People willingly putting spy cameras next to their front door, pointing directly at my bedroom window, where I walk, sending data to Amazon. I started reading how it’s their data and they’ll willingly turn it over to anyone who asks or pays for it. I read about a guy who was arrested (and later released after hiring an attorney with his own money) for being near a home where a murder occurred, unbeknownst to him.

I have nothing to hide, but I have everything to hide. Now mind your own business!
