/kbin Road to Release devlog series (kbin.social)

From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various...

Cheers for the continual update mate, always good to see how the project evolves

I still occasionally run across the odd dodgy website that tried to disable zooming (along with other oddities like trying to disable right clicking on desktop) and it feels honestly that most of these annoyances come about because some asshole in the company (the CEO, lead designer, marketer, whatever) sees any changes to their websites from the user as "ruining the experience", disregarding the whole concept of accessibility in the modern web

Make sure to never include your face when sending nude pics. Plenty of anonymous dick pics out there.

I thought the selling point behind most Twitter like services is that it's focused on negative positioning. E.g. things that are negative focused get more attention and engagement

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The best take on here. The reasonable one that still highlights how much better it is compared to other mainstream services

AnonymousLlama ,

I'd like to highlight that there's been a recent PR that's added the licensing to several files

One thing I'm really surprised about is that the overall screen strength doesn't seem to have improved over the last 5 years. Screens are still much better than what they were over a decade ago (where a drop without a case was pretty much a screen crack)

But I'm finding on my Pixel 7 pro for example that I'm still finding light scratches, it feels like these screens only have a 5 or 6 on the mohz scale where you'd usually expect a 7 or beyond.

The critiques that Steve laid out in this video were perfectly fine, highlighting the shortcomings of LMG when it comes to actually reviewing content (which is what they're pivoting to, away from 100% entertainment content). A typical Linus arrogant take where he'll learn nothing.

@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I think the end conclusion wasn't great. He said

It wouldn't matter if it dropped 20 degrees

It absolutely would matter. Just like how a 4090 costs an absurdly high amount but people will still buy it. For the right person getting 20 degrees knocked off might be worthwhile regardless of how expensive it is.

Never trusting rockstar with another game. They CBF to even update RDR2 on PS5 to give it a basic performance mode, so why would I trust any of their new "remakes" will get support

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

D4 will always be around. It's one of those games you can leave for years and come back to later. Be super keen on giving it a go once it's decently priced tbh. They definitely don't deserve 100+ AUD for it though

It'll be back eventually, bigger and stronger than before 💪

Missing the all important - don't care option, which I feel the vast majority of people would fall into

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. (gizmodo.com)

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Reddit was always going to rebound eventually, it's got a massive userbase and can pull through a fair number of people leaving. I'm pretty happy with the amount of free time I've won back since I've stopped doom scrolling Reddit.

Pretty keen to see how the fediverse improves over time.

I'd also say the brand reputation has taken a pretty decent hit with their awful handling of the situation. With an upcoming IPO you think they would have handled it carefully but they just seemingly YOLO'd it

It we were living off the good graces of another species who raised us, I guess we'd have no choice in the matter if we were fed other humans, just like these animals

I'd be keen to give it a go if it were legitimately anyone else besides Facebook. Would have even tried it if Microsoft made a random Twitter clone

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Perfectly fair. People coming from Reddit specifically need to be eased into the fediverse and saying "whoops sorry we're full / closed" isn't great.

Ideally if we want things balanced people should be on multiple instances but I'd rather several slower, bigger instances in the meantime until the community expands.

Cheers for the work you guys do!

@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

People hear from others that Lemmy is the place you go and when searched for you end up here. Having registrations closed doesn't sound like a great idea when most people have no idea about the fediverse

Love to see it. Really keen to see the type of new handhelds we're going to get in the future and how that'll impact market share

Steam On Linux Usage Spikes To Nearly 2% In July, Larger Marketshare Than Apple macOS (www.phoronix.com)

According to these new numbers from Valve, the Linux customer base is up to 1.96%, or a 0.52% jump over June! That’s a huge jump with normally just moving 0.1% or so in either direction most months… It’s also near an all-time high on a percentage basis going back to the early days of Steam on Linux when it had around a 2%...

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Great that Linux is getting more representation overall though. Wonder how anti-cheat implementations work nowadays, I remember them not being supported on Linux before, so games didn't run.

Toxic behavior like this is something that needs to be reported to the server admin (Ernest in this case). We're at the size where reporting this stuff can still be handled on a case by case basis

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

All of the downvotes/upvotes are public via the ActivityPub protocol. That's part of the system. Hiding it on the front-end for kbin only obscures the mechanism.

That's just the limitation of the current technology.

I feel the downvote is equally as important as the upvote, sometimes bad posts and comments just need negative reaction

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The whole moderation process is still getting a revamp. There's a fair few black holes where the system needs to be tightened up. Being an open source project it just all takes time. Be great to get it to a polished level where blocking / banning feels refined :)

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Yep. The transparency is the key takeaway here. Being able to see upvotes / downvotes is important. If people are going to retaliate against people for downvoting then, that's just part of the system. Block those people and move on. The issue here I feel is one person making over a dozen magazines and then banning this user because they've been slighted.

There should be a moderator code of conduct, where your bans and moderation needs to be justified, else you get a booting from the admins

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I'm pretty happy with kbin.social. It's a nice place, with several devs actively looking at making the experience better, it just takes a while being an open source project and all

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I've found squabbles pretty good for tweet style content. There seems to be a pretty engaged audience who can look at a short sentence or photo and happily engage with a comment

@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Always a fun thing to watch, trying to guess what they do to further alienate their unpaid staff

Waited ages for webp to have great browser support and it finally does. Plenty of image compression services let you choose a webp output which is a great space saver :)

A drop in the bucket for these blokes sadly. Fines this small don't encourage change, they're just the price for doing business

Those with parents who hold opposite political views than you, how do you go about disagreeing?

To be more specific, my parents raised my siblings and me to "respect" them, saying "yes sir, and "no ma'am" to everything they said. Spankings, all of that. Typical super conservative evangelical parents. Before I learned better, I was that way too. I went to college and since then have embraced the left more and more....

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The response to that type of that phrasing needs to be "so what?" Or "yeah and?"

They've done legitimately the lowest amount of effort needed, carry a child to term.

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Yep spot on. I get that people have their own preferences and tolerances, but that's what it is, thier own, it feels pretty entitled to think everyone else should be affected when you can just block communities and people yourself
