Yet another autistic computer nerd. I mainly code in Rust™ and right now I'm working on a better TOR. I'm in high school, and to be honest I wouldn't mind a scolarship. I joined Mastodon after the Reddit exodus, let's see how it goes (edit: going great!).

Rustacean, neurodiverse (high-functioning ASD & probably ADHD) trying to adapt to the world around them, agender because I couldn't care less, and an absolute computer nerd beyond salvation.

@BearOfaTime @warm at 6", even smaller hands like mine are able to reach within .5cm of the top of the screen. At that size, the weight distribution of the phone is what makes a difference in terms of manageability. For example, the weight distribution of the Pixel 6a (6.1") makes it a breeze to use with my right hand, but a tad more difficult with my left one. Using it in reverse (had to once) is impossible one-handed.

@danielfgom @Welp_im_damned wdym? I can perfectly buy Pixels from the Google store or Amazon in Spain.

@AdmiralShat @FragmentedChicken phones that support esims have actual sim chips inside, and esims basically flash the carrier data onto that chip.

:kde: KDE is investing for environmental sustainability 🥬

Before jumping to conclusions (some might see this as useless waste of resources) - it's quite the contrary:

Think about more OPTIMIZED SOFTWARE.

◉Electricity usage (and bills!) go down
◉Game consoles as Steam Deck (KDE's Plasma desktop) get more battery life
◉Shops Point-Of-Sales to use less energy
◉Supercomputers / servers / smart cars / drones / mini-PC's

@Linux yeah, I only use plasma bc of the battery life it yields.

@WarmSoda @Ranvier in the US, especially if you're young, you're indirectly forced. Luckily here that's not the case.

@soulfirethewolf @ijeff its biggest lockdown is the security model, which even though it won't disallow you from doing anything you couldn't otherwise do (if you're motivated enough), it draws the line of tradeoffs to make. I gave up rooting and a lot of stuff (like contactless payments) for it's security and stability, and I'm fine with that, but you should ask yourself if that's worth it for you. If you have to go out of your way to break the security model, even once, then it isn't for you.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@netchami @ijeff ironically, graphene had to do its porting through unofficial source releases and then finish the porting by comparing against the official A14 source; whereas Samsung, as a partner of google, had exclusive access to the unreleased source.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@skullgiver @ijeff people like eSIM because it allows multiple networks on phones that only have one physical slot; which nowadays, in my experience, is all except some cheap Xiaomis that have a microSD slot that doubles as dual SIM.

@independantiste @ArghZombies I honestly don't care what it is as long as it follows material design 3 and has material you support.

@thisisartman@mastodon.world avatar

The reason for Android's Notification system being better than iOS, is solely due to the ability to turn off individual aspects of an application's notifications.

Google, the poor multi-billion dollar scrappy startup that maintains Android, made a payment app that has one notification setting, "Google Pay". So all the ads, promotions, everything.

3rd party apps like PhonePe & Paytm have a better system.

How do you manage to maintain this OS?

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@DAMunzy @victron there's lots of tech stuff only available on Ali, or that are significantly cheaper there because of currency conversions and scalper resellers on other platforms.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@PrivateNoob @FragmentedChicken I think it's because graphene isn't done with the porting yet, because other features of the lockscreen like the shortcuts are also gone. They said that there was more work to do, so we'll see...

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@PrivateNoob it will, it's just that they wanted to get A14 out ASAP because of the security improvements.

@phillaholic @ink if it takes a week for an update to get to you, you can blame your carrier for that. Google pushes updates very quickly to unlocked phones.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@phillaholic carriers have to "approve" updates; Google, Samsung, or whoever is your vendor can't actually push an update because the carrier must sign it with their key. Was it Google's fault for the vuln? Yeah. Was it AT&T's fault for your update to take 1 week longer to roll out to you? Yeah.

@TheMadnessKing @floppy in Europe for most people iMessage is just the SMS app. Even though it pisses me off that Apple got away with it, having WhatsApp to comply with this is just huge. Everyone here uses WhatsApp, and now I won't be forced to leave Signal anymore.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@el_bhm @floppy you americans are making a fool of yourselves in these threads, there are tons of comments about whatsapp being old or only for drug dealers & sex workers, and it's so funny how out of touch with the world outside of your borders y'all are. In basically any other place of the world; universal messengers like WhatsApp, Telegram, or WeChat are the de facto standard.

@MrsDoyle @steebo_jack I used to have that phone, and that and the headphone jack are the only things I miss on my 6a.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@theangriestbird @FragmentedChicken IMO it's great that they're settling for a unique brand look that's actually practical. Pixel's camera bump not only makes them usable on flat surfaces, but allows you to clamp-mount camera lenses on the bump itself. Personally, I really like the look & feel of my 6a.

@Psythik @gencha I use one of the millions of YT music clients on F-Droid (ViMusic) and it works like a charm, though if you want Google account support you'll have to use ReVanced manager to patch a compatible version of YT music.

@worfamerryman @FragmentedChicken android is less memory efficient, because Java in lots of scenarios basically allocates the double of the memory that it needs for performance reasons. However, android with 6 or 8 GB is fine for 99% of users. 24 GB is nuts, and it's probably just for gaming.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@gvasco @IdleSheep recently it's even slightly buggy too, but it's still orders of magnitude lower than stock.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@blindsight @Apeeksiht my 6a's battery life w/ GrapheneOS is great. Not the best, but lasts a day of moderate use just fine. Days of heavy use I'll have to charge it in the late afternoon, and days of light use it's almost like I haven't unplugged it.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@skullgiver @LaughingFox It's not programmer laziness at all, RAM modules' size has to be of a power of 2 on most platforms because of various assumptions the CPU makes in memory alignment and memory bulk reads for performance reasons. Processors don't interact directly with the flash dies, so it's fine for them to be of the size they feel like provided the controller knows what it's doing.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@ExLisper @aluminium Android and iOS have been intercalating featureful and polishing updates with each other for a while now.

[Rant] Cloud service is not a reason to have phones with only 128 GB

I am in the process of looking between repairing my phone or switching to a new one. And the no brainer evolution to the OnePlus 7 Pro I have is a Pixel phone. Pixel Phones are definitely not perfect, I know that the battery would fall faster than other phones but hey, that’s ok, google chip in it, possibility to go...

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@zikk_transport2 @Kyoyeou the cloud is someone else's computer, and I'd rather have my data on mine. I can understand why a normal user, who can barely manage their own computer, would want someone else to do it for them. But I am perfectly capable of doing my own backups and self-hosting random crap.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@Pfalkingham @Klystron you could use a case that elevates the fold's thickness to match the camera bump.

Alonely0 ,
@Alonely0@mastodon.social avatar

@cheery_coffee @Klystron You have the option to also export to raw, so that you'll have the full sensor data, without lossy compression, processing or AI.
