I really enjoyed @RegQualGenes's event in Leeds at the weekend - it was great meeting up with lots of lovely genealogists (most of whom I had only met virtually before), as well as learning from a variety of inspiring speakers 😃

Hi all! Glad to have joined the genealogy community here. Feel free to stop by and check out my latest blog post:

A robbery, followed by a mysterious death. Did successful farmer Michael Shelly commit suicide? Or was he murdered? What do you think?

Welcome to the genealogy community here at Mastodon.

What a mystery you have with Michael Shelly's story. I agree that several pieces of information make it seem suspicious.

What would a prisoner record be called in German?

I am trying to figure out whether prisoner records from Festung Rendsburg in 1803 are extant or not. I can understand written German but it is difficult to search for the records when I do not know what they are called.

Nice story! It really shows how much can be found in historical newspapers. I sometimes think of them as social media before the internet.

@edintone @thomas @genealogy @geneadons @KottalGenealogy I agree that many older newspapers are riddled with typos & inaccuracies, must confirm with other sources--but to read that hubby's grandpa hosted the wedding/dinner for a daughter! A wedding in his home rather than in a religious setting, that was a new nuance in .

I don't know, but I know that my mother was named after a character in a novel in a magazine my grandmother read while pregnant. We have the magazine where she wrote the alternatives in the margin.
If we had not been told about it, we might have thought my mother was named after her father's grandmother. But my grandmother said she didn't know that in-law's name before later in life, so it is a coincidence that my mother and her share names.
