"This is book about the dead, and the people who are left behind. It is also a personal story, written in my own voice, as a citizen of a nation I cannot recognize as my own. The thousands who died were killed with the permission of my people. I am writing this book because I refuse to offer mine." -- Patricia Evangelista in her book's Prologue

"Our understanding of early modern empire construction can thus be reshaped through an analysis that looks beyond intellectual, political and administrative origins towards the people who actually undertook the project of colonization. On the colonial frontier, we see European empires adopting military recruitment strategies from Europe — including forced conscription, convict transportation and a reliance on vagabonds and other ‘undesirables’ — yet the unique environment of the frontier changed the nature of this military service."

Happy 20th birthday to the Tagalog Wikipedia (that is according to the English Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_Wikipedia) 🎉🎂

I somehow remember requesting that the Tagalog Wikipedia be created, but I no longer remember when or where I placed that request and I couldn’t find any record of how tlwp got created. 😝 But by convention @joshlim and I pegged the creation date to December 1 as the Internet Archive first crawled the domain on November 30.

Hey please post your favourite noodle dishes? Dealing with fatigue without spiralling into self-destructive moods is difficult, so I want to do something creative and nourishing. Also, the tag makes me hungry 😁

In the , my favorite would be pancit palabok, a noodle dish made with a thick sauce and topped with shrimps, cracklings, smoked fish (tinapa), or boiled egg.

Some @pinoy|s often interchange this with Pancit Malabon, and the actual difference is just the type of noodles it's served with.

In the local of the , we can easily express which order in the siblings we are, but it has always been a challenge to express this in English.

    Examples (Filipino - English):

“Ako ay ikatlo sa mga magkakapatid.”

EN: “I am third of the siblings” vs “I am third of four siblings.”

The problem with the latter translation is “of four” was not stated in the . The first option is the closest but it sounds weird.

How about this: “Ako ay pangalawa sa mga babae at pang-apat sa mga magkakapatid.”

Literal translation: “I am second of the female siblings and fourth of siblings.”

Maybe a better one is: “I am second female and fourth among us siblings.”

How is it in your local language? And how would you express it in English?
