Called it. Elon's doing exactly what I thought he would do: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/109979152813584947

Twitter is dead.

There is no point in trying to hold on to what Twitter used to be. What Twitter used to be no longer exists.

It died the moment Elon walked in the building.

Anything posted there since then has been free content on his everything app and potential crypto scam, X: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jul/23/twitter-elon-musk-says-he-wants-to-change-companys-bird-logo

kbin's API is coming soon! I've finished up all of the endpoints required for a useful API, so it will enter review soon! The PR is here

This will allow apps like @artemisapp to interact more effectively with kbin!

already got my own test instance with the changes running. THIS IS SUCH A KILLER KBIN FEATURE! You the boss!

Hi, in this and probably the next week, I will be working on these tasks:

Today, I will be slightly less available as I am in the final stages of taking care of all the formalities, and I also had to handle a few personal matters. Starting tomorrow, I will be back at full capacity again. When this succeeds, in the next releases, I will focus more on frontend and accessibility.

Now that both and have been short-sighted enough to burn through the goodwill of many users and communities, I wonder if it's time for distributions like @fedora and @centos - who were latecomers to the - to embrace ?

Let's see if I succeed in posting this to @linux as well - to see if Mastodon<->Lemmy interop works as well as it seems to do with another Lemmy community

@fedora @centos @linux should that be tagged on every official toot? That way you cross publish at zero cost

Looking for a place to discuss what you've been reading? Consider checking out the new Lemmy instance dedicated to all things books and writing over at: https://literature.cafe

The best part is you can participate from your existing fediverse account. Communities on Lemmy can be followed like users and have similar functionality to other fediverse groups!

YSK: When making posts on Lemmy/Kbin always put at the end some hashtags related to your post topic.

So users from Mastodon and Pixelfed can interact with your post without even need to use their Lemmy/Kbin account or learn about "how to use the ActivityPub".
This also helps to have more content avaliable across the Fediverse due to better discoverability.

@youshouldknow

jlou ,

The trick is to edit out the mention of the lemmy community before you add the hashtags then lemmy doesn't see the updated version of the post with the hash tags, but people on mastodon see the hash tags

Hi @maegul, I just wanted to let you know. It's not perfect yet, but it's something I'll be working on in the coming months after the first release. Thanks for pointing it out, it's a relatively simple change, but it makes a significant difference in the overall experience.

@ernest Woah, this makes a heck of a difference. That's powerful!
I love the way that kbin gives you far more options to sort the Microblog feed than, say, Mastodon.

Most popular posts (by people I'm subscribed to) from the last week. Go. Boom!

I love it!

ContentConsumer9999 ,

@ernest Could you maybe allow us to have different options for the thread and microblog feed?

rideranton , (edited )
@rideranton@kbin.social avatar

I've submitted the second to last PR for review! This PR adds thread and thread comment retrieval, creation, deletion, editing, voting, reporting, and moderation functionality to the API! The last PR will be very similar to this one, except for microblogs!

Didn't you have the API 'complete' like 2 months ago?

Yes, but it did not have any tests written to verify that it worked. These PRs have been resolving that issue so that there can be at least some guarantees that the API works when it gets onto kbin.social and others

(Also, please remember to buy @ernest a coffee if you are able, he's been burning the candle at both ends to support kbin.social and deal with personal business)

Ewan_Croft ,

@fediverse Does anyone know if there's a account for development?

I want to add it to my "Fediverse Projects" list.

Danterious ,

You could follow this guy: @ernest but he is just a developer of the software not necessarily an official development account.

Btw, this is me testing the limits of kbin's microblog feature, so the following post will be long. I will post a TLDR at the end.

It has been nearly a month since I've first joined . Even before the exodus, I was already growing tired of the site for the fact that despite how large the communities were, they were very cold and impersonal. There was also the fact that for the community at least, we had been siloed off from the rest of reddit, because nearly every topic involving issues were very often met with hostility by a good amount of users, often followed by a locked topic. It was even getting to the point where I didn't even feel safe in the some of the more socially liberal spaces.

The fact that mods were being stripped of some of the few tools they had to keep their communities hospitable, I knew the writing was on the wall. I tried many reddit alternatives during the blackout, including and . But once I figured out how , , and worked, I found myself feeling right at home on the fediverse.

I think the main reason why is because many of the people here are misfits from other platforms. Many of the users on mastodon are former twitter users who were driven off by the corporate culture of twitter, and later by Elon Musk and the poisoning of the platform. Others are former redditors like me who found platforms like lemmy, and are in the midst of trying to rebuild the community they once had on thier former platform.

Fediverse definitely doesn't feel "mainstream" like the sites that many of us come from , but perhaps that is part of the appeal, and why I have taken to it far quicker than any other social platform I have tried in the past. I'm just hoping as the fediverse continues to grow and attract new users, that it doesn't lose it's quirky and experimental spirit.

TLDR: I like fediverse. It's weird, quirky, and I feel more open here than I was ever able to be on reddit. Don't ever change.

@Roundcat Happy to see you with us!!! ❤️

Chozo , (edited )
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I feel like the reason , and the at large, aren't taking off has to do with the fact that they're actually social networks. People don't seem to want a social network, they want content platforms. People aren't using or or to keep up with their friends these days, they're using these apps to entertain themselves. And since and every other platform that used to be a social network began pivoting toward content promotion, I think society has forgotten what a social network is supposed to actually be anymore.

@dan@upvote.au avatar

For what it’s worth, I use Facebook to keep up with my friends. I don’t use any of the discovery features like Reels. I have friends and family in Australia where Facebook is more popular than in the USA.

Sam_uk ,
@Sam_uk@kbin.social avatar

@Chozo I wonder if this bodes well for Kbin/Lemmy? Arguably their model is more about content than social relationships.

@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

So funny thing about . I post a photo thread. I go to my profile and see the thread. I click on the image preview icon. I immediately get sent to https://kbin.social/u/undefined. Not only is Mr. Undefined a real user, hello @undefined, but somehow my image now directs to his profile.

As I dig into Firefox dev tools to find out why, I see that uBlock Origin has blocked the request for my image. But that's odd, I have no specific blocking rules for kbin, and kbin.social doesn't run ads. What's up?

So it turns out my image got uploaded to the following URL: https://media.kbin.social/media/ad/b2/adb203028331eada7f99f2b4547cbc0a7efc0ba4e203a71d9d193c02d38aa4f1.jpg

.../media/ad/... That's what uBlock was upset about. So by blocking that request, the target of the AJAX fetch is... undefined. Hence my trip to a random user's profile. XD

HarkMahlberg OP ,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

So if you're a kbin user and for some ungodly reason you find yourself on Mr. Undefined's page after previewing an image, you may want to add the following rules to your ublock origin list.

@e569668@fedia.io avatar

@HarkMahlberg I would consider adding a bug for this to the issue tracker as it seems like a gotcha https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues
