fucking. why. if new reddit is soooooo fucking good just stick with it.

NotBadAndYou ,

They only care about monetization. If they can achieve that easier with a new UI you know they're going to do that. Old.reddit.com and the current www.reddit.com are both expendable if they can make more money without them. This is the new, publicly-traded corporation Reddit. Tradition be damned, they will make their money in whatever manner pays best.

Untitled4774 ,

If people thought algorithms were bad before, they’re about to get a titans times worse for Reddit.

I have a self-hosted troddit instance I use to check up on smaller communities, or to replace Reddit.com queries from search engine results with abs when it loads the front page vs the Reddit.com front page is vastly different.

There’s no surprise why they got rid of the api, because they’re playing with engagement and need more direct access.

That will teach them a lesson about training models on random repositories.

Cheradenine , in GitHub is under automated attack by millions of cloned repositories filled with malicious code

This is bad, but only seems to be related to forks from main (correct me if I am wrong). So if you go to source, you should be OK.

'adding its own malicious code which is concealed under seven layers of obfuscation'

Behind seven vpns?

Heratiki ,

I’m thinking the code is obfuscated by random calls to various functions so that the code block isn’t just one section you can easily see but sprinkled throughout instead.

Cheradenine ,

Yes that seems like the case, it just struck me as funny

i_am_not_a_robot ,

You're not OK. Not all forks are labeled as forks.

Cheradenine ,

Thank you for the clarification

haui_lemmy , in [Question] With Whatsapp having to become interconnect-able due to DMA, are there any known messenger apps which are planned to be interconnected with Whatsapp?

Matrix has whatsapp integrations, facebook, signal, telegram, discord. Just join a matrix server like tchncs.de to use them.

This has nothing to do with dma but it allows me to use one app for all my chats which is nice and also pull my friends away from those services since they wont lose access either.

Good luck.

ace , in [Question] With Whatsapp having to become interconnect-able due to DMA, are there any known messenger apps which are planned to be interconnected with Whatsapp?
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

Well, the first tests for interconnected communication with WhatsApp were done with Matrix, so that's a safe bet.

haui_lemmy ,

Matrix has already long been able to connect to whatsapp. I‘m not sure if you‘re talking about the matrix protocol (which would be news to me) but there are several working bridges for whatsapp at this point.

ace , (edited )
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

The first official implementation of directly connecting WhatsApp to another chat system - using APIs built specifically for purpose instead of third-party bridges - was indeed done against the Matrix protocol, as part of a collaboration in testing ways to satisfy the interoperability requirements of the EU Digital Services Act.
So not a case of a third-party bridge trying to act as a WhatsApp client enough to funnel communication, but instead using an official WhatsApp endpoint developed - by them - explicitly for interoperation with another chat system.

I think the latest update on the topic is the FOSDEM talk that Matthew held this February.

Edit: It's worth noting that the goal here is to even support direct E2EE communication between users of WhatsApp and Matrix, something that's not likely to happen with the first consumer-available release.

Thanks for elaborating. TIL!

Thanks. I still find it a little ridiculous to call them "opensource" when their main product isn't even opensource.

Not even Marvel could foresee the consequences of this, it's for sure the next Nobel, it's almost like inventing a Perpetuum Mobile. Once a pulse of energy is provided to this medium it continues to oscillate for an indefinite time.

sugar_in_your_tea , in Honda built a powered chair to zoom around theme parks while wearing an AR headset.

This would be a great idea for wheelchair users, since I imagine being in a crowd of people at waist level detracts a bit from the experience you'd get by walking. But if everyone is able to use these chairs, it'll just cause more congestion.
